I was thinkering with the same idea but had no clue where to start, but i wanted to make it so that all 5 fingers could be used. I wonder if that would be possible, like making it 5 leds instead of 2. In any case ill try to get to work on something along the lines of this invention. Thanks for the inspiration.
Where did you placed the camera? How are the leds set up on the glove or if you are using a IR LED array where did you put it and how does your wiimote don't confuse your hands with the led or reflective tapes from Track IR?
I'm trying to build one up but am struggling to get the wiimote picking up okay. By the time I have moved the wiimote far enough back from the screen that it can 'see' all of it (only a 24") The LED is not bright enough. I even bend the LED back on itself so it's pointing directly at the wiimote.
Do you use special ultra-bright IR LEDs? Would you have a part number?
What kind of switch do you use in the glove? I took mine from a mouse, and that is difficult to use, because when it finally registers (direction of your push is important), it drags it around. I'm using SmoothBoard to register the clicks.
Power Glove... OH MY GOD... i am obviously out of the loop on this cool shit! I just saw my friend with a tripple monitor set up for flight simX. Does anyone know it this game is compatible with tripple monitors? Power glove... something else I need to look into! Thanks for costing me more money now that I found a new gadget!
If you are using Track IR Pro Clip then you can disable the IR lights. Those IR lights are just there to illuminate the default clip so it can be more reflective.
I have had to put this project on hold temporarily. We do appreciate everyone's support and email and hope to continue with pursuing this in the near future.
Feel free to post up questions and I'll get to answering them when I can.
Does your mouse still funtion while running Johny's software ?
Very good idea to implement this tool like this , i expirimented myself to with the wiimote and a ir led , but putting it into a glove and making it only blimp when you touch something is really great. But i do wonder if you can still use the mouse though ...
The TrackIR is usually fixed on top of the monitor and it looks at the players head. While the WiiRemote camera is pointed at the monitor looking into the screen, so they are basically in opposite directions without interfering with each other.
This is partially correct. An issue with the TrackIR unit is it is a camera as well as an IR Transmitter. Hold a Digital camera to it and you can see the IR light emitting.
The TrackIR unit will need to be out fo the field of view of the Wii Remote to avoid unwanted IR reception by the Wii Remote from the TIR unit.
oops, sorry. I was wearing a DIY'ed Track Clip, and forgot about the internal IR LED's inside the TIR. lol.
Just turned them on and saw the 4 dim red IR LED's with my naked eyes. They certainly look much brighter with a camera because of the wider spectrum characteristics of the CCD.
In DCS-BS, a text message pops up when you hover the mouse pointer on a certain switch, which is pretty handy if you're not quite familiar with the cockpit. Is it possible to put a second IR LED elsewhere(say fixed to the monitor frame)that goes ON when you press your screen? Then you may keep the one on your fingertip constanly lit and use it to move the mouse arrow for text messages.
I was wondering what is the size of your monitor and the dimensions. It looks like the switches are of a size that allows your finger to work with them. Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me.
Question, my LCD screen doesnt like it when I press my finger against the screen everytime. Will this still work with a glass plate in front of it or something similar ?
I don't understand how the camera knows the difference between you almost touching the screen and touching the screen. Is there a switch on your finger that lights up the LED when you press or what?
I also would be interested in this software... and whadya know! I make FS videos for various developers, products and hardware! If you guys are interested in getting in contact with the guys at Natural Point and/or need some marketing, let me know.

The LEDs I used came straight from the Radio Shack tray.
I don't know how far back your LED is, but my Wiimote had no problem at 4 feet. Make sure your shoulder or something else isn't blocking the LED.

This does not interfere with using the mouse at all. The only time the cursor reacts is when the IR camera picks up the IR light.

You are obviously using TrackIR or Freetrack for head tracking... how is your glove not interfering? Is it simply out of TiR camera shot?
Very impressive!

Not that I am aware of.
Once you use the cockpit in this fashion for a few flights, you'll find that the clicking of the switches becomes almost natural.

If you are concerned with harming the LCD, a screen protector will not interfere with the IR LED.

The response and requests I have received for this is well beyond what we can do on our own.
If you would like to receive the newest information on what is happening with this, feel free to contact me at;

I don't understand how the camera knows the difference between you almost touching the screen and touching the screen. Is there a switch on your finger that lights up the LED when you press or what?
Frederf220 3 years ago
There is a contact switch on the tip of the finger. When this switch is touched against the screen, the IR LED activates.
scoochy 3 years ago
The head tracking is done with TrackIR. This video demonstrates a clickable cockpit.
This can be applied to any flight sim with clickable cockpit functionality (FS9, FSX, Falcon Allied Force and Falcon variants etc...).
scoochy 3 years ago
So you were using the Wii Remote to simulate head tracking or was it for the click able cockpit? Or both?
