The movie isn't related to SH2. The pyramid heads are killing Maria because they are a manifestation of James himself. Maria looks just like his wife he murdered and so Silent Hill is forcing him to realize what he did. Her provocative style of dress shows what he really thought about his wife. He killed her in the hospital while sexually frustrated. Pyramid head is often seen raping female monsters in the game. Many of these creatures represent his wife and her suffering.

I think it would have had a greater impact had he said "Now it's over," or "it now has to end," which sounds more vague and passive, letting him either succumb to punishment or stand triumphant over his punishers

There was resolve in those words, and it added beauty to his story of redemption after going through hell and not facing the reality of his situation. @29razorback29 I don't think the diary on the roof is Mary's. It's a reflection of James and Angela, who non-conincidently also utters the line "You're the same as me. It's easier just to run". The diary's mention of this is a reference to James's crime (he ended Mary's life to free himself) and to the fact that he contemplates suicide (which is why reading the diary gives the in-water ending).

@29razorback29 I don't buy that Mary was ever in Brookhaven (which is never even indicated in the game). She was physically sick, not mentally. As far as I tell, the setting of Brookhaven is not about Mary, but about the psycological state of James, Eddie and Angela, which is especially significant if you pay attention to notes in the Hospital Office and other notes (such as Louise). There is a hint in her full letter that Mary was in a facility in Silent Hill, but Brookhaven is rather a leap.

plus the helmet in homecoming is the exact same helmet from the movie, which is even farther from the two. homecoming used so much from the uncanon movie and tried to make it all canon to the series for nothing more than fan service.

the peal away effect to the otherworld is one. it works fine for the movie in most scenes. with this effect it give the impression that there is only one version of the otherworld "underneath". when in SH2 "you see it too? for me its always like this" and in SH3 "they look like monsters to you?!" both point heavily that everyone see's things differently.

pyramid head himself was yet another. they used the design from the movie.  they also used the excuse for his appearance in the film as their excuse for having him in the game. both very different from one another.

it does fit the plot. just unnecessary. pyramid head is the embodiment of guilt wanting to be punished. which is what Alex had in Homecoming (but he just didn't remember it, hence why pyramid head had little interest in him). @Mattneck: Well, there is also a speculation thy PH could be Valtiel as they share both the same body form and clothes. Not to also mention that Valtiel in SH3 was always killing monsters and Pyramid Head in SH2 is also killing monsters. Technically since PH is an executioner and so is Valtiel and Valtiel wears the same robe PH does, AND a pyramid like hood, doesn't that give away that PH might be the same? Just a little bit?
