The 365 BB was Ferrari's first mid-engine car with the 180 degree V12 inside the rear axle. But it was not a "supercar." Ferrari's first supercar was the 250 GTO. It's second was the 288GTO, third was the F40, then F50, then the Enzo. Supercars are cars that are so vastly in excess of comparable cars in performance, and exceed 186.4 miles per hour, and several other criteria that are continually argued about. But the 365 BB was not a supercar, just Ferrari's flagship. And a handmade car.
@MarquisEstelle A supercar isn't anything so concrete. The measure of a supercar is based on the general technology at the time of its release; when this car was released, it truly was a supercar. It outperformed most everything else in the world at the time, and as far as design, price and performance went, they were bonkers.
Please. Only 39 250 GTO's were ever made and they rarely, if ever, were used on public roads by those who owned them.
Ferrari had more powerful and faster "supercars" in the 50's with the 410 Superamerica and 500 Superfast roadcars.
Calling the 365 GT4/BB "not a supercar" is absurd. It was Ferrari's answer to Lamborghini Miura, which was the first real supercar, derived from racing technology.
Oh, so a car that doesn't exceed 300km/h is "not a supercar" by definition? Fail
@mushroomscouser It's called a 'boxer' because the 180 degree arrangement of the pistons, with the heads off, looks like they are boxing. Strictly a design observation rather than a formal definition.
Two of my favorite engines... Flat 6 from Porsche.. and the Flat 12 from the BB. Ferrari did try and save the Testarosa with the 512TR... I think if Ferrari were to use another Flat 12 in a newer production car would be real nice.
True. Most Countach spent a lot of time getting fixed and it's carburettors tuned. Although the noise of the Lamborghini V12 is unforgettable, the Boxer of the Ferrari sounds great in its own right and was proved in racing for over a decade.
It's an old discussion, but strictly spoken it wasn't a boxer, although Ferrari called it that. The flat 12 had an angle of 180°, but to make it a boxer, the opposite pistons should reach their top dead centres simultaneously, balancing each other out and taking away their primary vibrations. That was not the case with the Ferrari flat 12, hence the more V12 sound and not the typical boxer sound.
testarossa vs countach epic battle like star wars vs star treck coke vs pepsi vickings vs packers audi vs bmw vette vs viper mustang vs camaro ........etc etc etc you get the point
This is what a rear-engine super car should look like. Purposeful design results in timeless elegance. Waaah I will never have one except in 1/24 scale.
what is wonderful is when you step on the gas and all six weber twin chokes open up you hear a woooshing sound almost like a big 4bbl but more refined
My word just listen to that engine

I am a bit confused..if it is a true 180 degree V12, how can it be a boxer? A 911 isnt a 180 degree V6 because of its firing order...it is a boxer...

How could Ferrari replace this beauty with the vulgar and tacky Testarossa?
grahamblood 2 years ago
Wow. That's so good to hear. I thought I was the only one that felt like that.
512 Boxer was THE car that got me into cars.

I agree that the 365's are classy and more elegant, but wouldn't call the Testarossa vulgar and tacky, she's gorgeous on her own right.

But then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder........?

Those who have taste always do. The Testarossa was the epitome of 80's tastelessness (is that a word?).
The Berlinetta Boxer is one of the best looking Ferrari's (and supercars) ever made.
