I'm not sure where you derive your labels from but Bloomberg is exactly the kind of mayor NY needs. He's a social liberal and a fiscal conservative. As for who he's concerned about, you can start with the poor and work your way up. He funnels hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money through the Carnegie foundation which disperses that money throughout NYC to create programs and services for the poor that otherwise wouldn't exist.

So who exactly is it you think he's not concerned about?

If he really cares, get ride of all city parking permits(Teachers, PD, FD, Doctors and ALL CITY AGENCY). Note if these employees have a hardtime parking like all NYC citizens do they would use mass transit too. Trains would be safer w/more cops riding them free of charge(off duty). We also need residential parking too.

Bloomberg wants to make the streets for the rich only. I, like many New Yorkers don't like taking the train. The trains smell, the people are crazy (not everybody). And the trains are not safe.

Why for the rich only? Mass transit works, and this will provide additional mass transit funds. We need to start thinking more carefully about our own direction - hundreds of thousands of idling cars stuck in traffic should not be acceptable. We need to evolve to a new model of urban transportation. I will gladly pay the $8 if I choose to drive to NYC during those hours - and I am now more likely to use a subway or train. So be it. And, I am not wealthy.

And so...the richer people can afford to pay these tolls and the poor would have to think twice about working in the city. Prices of food and merchandise will rise because trucks who sometimes can't make early deliveries would demand more money and suppliers would definitely inflate their prices and use congestion pricing in NY as an excuse. People will get frustrated and then shop anywhere other than the city and thus, New York will lose lots of money.

we have what is called am oyster card which is swiped onto a terminal, possibly similar to your metro card so that works out cheaper. I live in a area called notting hill, which is quite central a monthly oyster card cost the equivalent of $185. yes wages are higher than the US, but cost of living in the UK is astronomical as well as paying for the congestion charge.

You might be mixing the issue. There would be a reduction of greenhouse gasses if people reduced how much they use their cars. With this plan, that wouldn't happen. They'd just park somewhere else. In fact, they'd probably use MORE gas sitting in traffic while trying to find a decent parking spot.

If you live anywhere where it would be infeasible to build more parking, you probably don't need to be driving to the transit hubs anyway. In the outer boroughs, there are buses to and from the subway stations. In the suburbs, there are commuter rail stations with large parking lots and, often, buses to and from those stations as well.

Congestion pricing is an infeasible policy. To do that, you need to have parking hubs in the boundaries of the outer buroughs, and next to major transit hubs, such as Jamaica Station, Flatbush and Nostrand, Woodlawn and 179th and Hillside. New York is running outta land, and all the parking lots are being sold and developed. For example, the lot at Flatbush and Nostrand is now becoming a Target Mall.
