He was more likely a student pilot, the Pilot In Command always sits in the right seat in a helicopter (opposite to that of a fixed wing) but we all know what you meant
my dad is a longranger l4 pilot in, i had ask him about the same thing you did about the habit of no earphones during starton and leaving the door open, he just says to me pilot stuff, nice vid by the way
It is pilot stuff, nothing in the manual. It may make you deaf sooner but at least I'll be safe if something goes wrong with the C-20 little baby. I'm glad you like it.
@jamestitan9 one thing about pilots is they defend their habits with that phrase, my CFI does it all the time like when he has the door open while taxiing or hand turning the prop even though a failed mag could end his life in one second and says when i get commercial rating then i can do w.e. i want, until then do as he says not as he does
@bigblockz8 I have never seen a CFI passing along bad habits, not saying it isn't happening. However, if your CFI is teaching you things that are unsafe I would suggest going somewhere else to learn the proper way. Having the door open is not unsafe, the 206 and other helicopters can be operated without a door even attached. One thing about pilots huh? Sounds like you have a very skewed view placed there by a bunch of idiots. You need to meet some real pilots instead.
@allantotti listen to the engine........ or ya know... watch N1 and TOT and such like your supposed to and not have to worry about losing your hearing
@mjm9536 Yep, we do that too but certain things can't be picked up by only observing an instrument. Regardless, you don't have to do what I did as it isn't requested in the RFM.
@allantotti Not saying this in an argumentative way at all but I beg to differ. About the only thing I can't hear with an HGU-56 helmet and CEPs in my ears is the igniters firing away. Otherwise watch the appropriate gauges and you'll avoid a hot start every time. Anything more severe than a hotstart and you would have plenty of time via chip lights or physically feel it and be able to shut down. And if I cant hear there are no igniters? Roll throttle to idle? Nothing? Ok shut down.
@mjm9536 Point of it all being I'm early on in what will hopefully be a long career in Army AV and will do anything to protect my hearing lol. Here they are going on just short of 100,000 hours now with no hot starts or other major accidents so I feel hearing protection on during startup is a moot point, safe to do it with it, preference to do it without.
In addition to what the poster answered you, the turbo-shaft spins up so slowly you have plenty of time before the downwash is even a thought. (The 206, as you can well hear, does not have a reciprocating engine.)
oh ok, believe it or not i'm thinking of getting my commercial license next October. Thinking of going with 206B turbine time at great slave heli in calgary. Where did you go? How do you like being pilot, and did you find a job yet? I know it's low, but whats the salary for low time pilots? thanks, Jord
IIRC there was a company that did fit and certify a handful of LongRangers with 2 engines, but Bell's own "TwinRanger" design never materialized. Which is kind of odd, considering even the 47 has a redundant system.
Yes, Mark is a great instructor, I've learned so much from him. The SAI chopper is from Sydney helicopters. It's an old machine but flies better than lots of newer ones that I have flown.
I may know your dad as I've worked there for a couple of weeks. What his name?
Here the ignighters going, "Snap snap snap snap" then light off, the deep rumble.... love the gas turbine engine..... good video, the old lady's not bad either..
Magic! I have a video of the start up proceedures in an RAF Seaking with intercom chat. Engines start one by one then rotors engadged. brill!! dont know how to put it on you tube thou as just learning how to work this pc. lol. Guidence for this appreciated.
Thanks for the nice comments, you are all 100% right it is awesome and that's why I have decided to put this video online so people can enjoy a bit of what being a pilot is, and even more, flying a baby like the Jet Ranger.
MikeyC, our friend is definitely still going very well and if I am not wrong he's got a brand new 206 III. Best pilot that I have flown with in Australia so far.
Having a bad day,,need a boost of the spirit,,I just watch this video and all is good. Any lucky soul who gets to press that Jet Ranger start button needs to remind their self how lucky they are EVERY TIME...you are VERY blessed....
I call it A250 therapy - having a bad day,,,things getting a little rough,,,I just watch and listen and feel better immediately. Any person who gets to press that start button in a Jet Ranger needs to say a thank you to the Lord every time to show how lucky they are...
12 - 15% N1 . . .6% of fuel on the collective. 1 hand over the idle release . . .AWESOME...Simply AWESOME by far the most beautiful sounding aircraft.
Seriously, I believe you are 100% right! ;) But why the general public thinks *we* are insane while *they* buy CDs (that somebody produces, evidently) with the sound of F1 car engines?... Sigh... :*(
Love that soundtrack, it never gets old.

I don't like to draw current until I have RPMs to replace it, meaning I don't turn the radio on. Apart from which I like to hear it starting up.

Good habbit to leave the door open and no headset during start.
heliclass 4 years ago
You have to listen to the engine during first seconds of start up dude... Headset will block that.
The door is secured during ground procedures.

how many engines to they have...it sounds like they have 2??
REV550FAN 4 years ago
Bell Jet Ranger III is a single engine helo.
It has an Allison C-20 Turbine.
allantotti 4 years ago
whats the winding up sound that starts at about 15 seconds...?
REV550FAN 4 years ago
That was the moment that I've opened the throttle after 15%. Before it's just air, after the fuel is added to the mixture.
=)
allantotti 4 years ago
@REV550FAN I believe the sound you are hearing is the transmission for the rotors winding up. Could be wrong
