The Other Boleyn Girl is full of inaccuracies. Mary was a promiscuous woman for lack of a better word. She wasn't 13 when she married Carey and became Henry's mistress. She was older than Anne. Her children were probably not Henry's there is no evidence to that. Anne was an ambitious woman who made mistakes no doubt but nothing near this B*tch this novel makes her out to be. Henry is nothing more than a plot device. George and Anne never slept together it was meant to destroy Anne's moral image
I do enjoy the books and think they're well written but she takes a lot of artistic license with the facts. She doesn't just go with the facts...most historians believe Anne to be innocent of incest...and for one can't believe that a woman as smart as Anne would ever do something as stupid as to cheat on the King and to commit incest....ew!
look, thing is this woman wrote a book on an ill-documented time a time where no one bothered to keep their great grandmother diary that discribed every1s personality there is no prof the either Catherine or Henry Carey where the kings kids but this is also no prof they r not, also it is to be noted that Cat's granddaughter was discribed to look much (much more than just a second cousin) like Queen Elizabeth. What Anne or Mary where like we'll never no and its upto us to be creative
I like how her books was written, however I think your portrayal of Anne was inaccurate, and historical accounts dispute her findings of the relationship between Anne and Mary.
She based too much of her information in what she read by Retha Wernicke in her account of Anne's life (spelling probly wrong sorry!. She'd have done better to base it more on Eric Ives biography of Anne. Of all the books of hers I've read i belive The Constant Princess to be the most historically accurate as although i don't know whether Catherine did or did not sleep with Arthur i think in a novel you can explore the idea that she did as a work of fiction.
Great novel but fiction still! barely historically factual and her bibliography at the end of the novel is a joke! ive read some of the books she researched and none claim what she dares to. I'm surprised she didn't re-write history and have anne live. Anne was not a conniving bitch as Gregory and other comments seem to imply, she was the product of her families ambition and Henry stopped having sex with Katherine in 1524 before Anne was on the scene so he probly wanted to ditch her anyway!
Here here. There's no evidence that she [Mary Boleyn] ever had a child to King Henry VIII. When she went to Court in England, she wasn't particularly 'innocent', she'd been the mistress to King Francis I. Mary, may have been prettier, Anne was just smarter and wouldn't 'give in' so easily.
I said something like that on another video and someone said I didn't know what i was talking about! No one knows the exact dates of the affair between Mary and Henry hence why some people belive the kids are his. If they were inparticular the boy i think her would have given him titles like he did Henry Fitzroy as acknowledgment.
@mcca2dal quite right there is NO EVIDENCE and what you have said holds no certian truth king of France simply suggests that he had her this could hv been a fib 2 enrage the english King he also suggests he had Anne who was pregnant with Elizabeth be4 the marrage 2 henry so she 2 eventually gave in there hv been no records of Marys intelligents and she was not innocent as she already had a husband i believe her kids were the kings he wouldnt hv slept with her had she been sleeping with another
Love how she says she spends so much time on research, because she must ignore it all. I can't recall a historical book that ever proved that Mary's 1st child was Henry VIII's illegitimate son. Historians are clear that her children were born AFTER her affair with Henry; the kid wasn't his! It's odd that she claims to present fact, when most historians would disagree. TOBG takes way too much licence to even remotely be called historical fiction... it's a complete work of revisionist history.
Absolutely and also, most historians agree that Mary is the older of the two and Anne is indeed the younger. Moreover, when Anne took custody of Mary's son not out of spite but to give him an education that Mary could not afford.
I enjoyed the book, but it's a work of fiction and nothing historical.
Anne defied convensions and refused to become Henry's mistress because she knew she was to be discarded while Mary followed the rules (except for the Will Stafford ordeal) and was discarded and married off to some nobody. Anne is one of the leading feminist figures and Mary is all but forgotten as "the other Boleyn girl".
lol im with you Sera. Anne was a Bitch! This book is fiction with sprinkles of history facts. Anne defied convension??? She was a conniving power hungry home wrecker who got bit in the ass by Karma. In MY OPINION she got what she deserved.
the King likes her, she cannot refuse the king because the King may kill her. She doesnt want to sleep with the King because she'll just get cast away. The king keeps on persuing her. She keeps on turning him down. The king asks her to marry him. She says yes. (What else can she say in such a situation without endangering her family and herself?). She marries King. King gets tired of her. She gets her head cut off because she cannot bear males and King likes Seymour.
and Anne is NOT a feminist. she was an opportunist self-seeker. A feminist is not someone who seeks to usurp a just queen off her rightful throne, or uses her FEMALE charms and assets to get what she wants. Mary was painfully obedient, but in the end, SHE was the unconventional one. She married who she LOVED, regardless of household status, wihtout the blessing of her father or uncle, and without permission
I'm sorry, were you refering to the book? Because I was refering to real history.
Anne was one of the first females to seek what she wanted. She also defied traditional modest female rules. She was, as could be said, a woman in a man's world.
Best of her books that I've read. Neat little blurb about why she wrote it, but the music was wretched.

Nice book, but riddled with historical inaccuracies.

Um why is she at Hardwick Hall? No Boleyn went there, only Mary Queen of Scots.
Its a good book, but I can never ever entertain the fact that Anne and George were anything other than brother and sister.

Because she then wrote
"The other queen"

I love the book. I love Mary she is a great character, I prefer her over Anne.

Why?
Anne defied convensions and refused to become Henry's mistress because she knew she was to be discarded while Mary followed the rules (except for the Will Stafford ordeal) and was discarded and married off to some nobody. Anne is one of the leading feminist figures and Mary is all but forgotten as "the other Boleyn girl".
Mary was the elder and Anne was younger.

Why do you care what I think?
I like Mary over Anne so you complain to me about what you think of Anne?
Leave me alone.
I just hate Anne and like Mary - no changing that.

Anne's situation:
the King likes her, she cannot refuse the king because the King may kill her. She doesnt want to sleep with the King because she'll just get cast away. The king keeps on persuing her. She keeps on turning him down. The king asks her to marry him. She says yes. (What else can she say in such a situation without endangering her family and herself?). She marries King. um. just thought you would like to know that
there is no such word as convension
and Anne is NOT a feminist. she was an opportunist self-seeker. where do you get your historical references?
cz i'd really like to learn more
thank you!

You're out of your damn mind. You don't know anything about Anne Boleyn. Pick up something non-fiction.
writerchick10 3 years ago
you might even call Mary the feminist non-conformist, because she sought to eat the food that she got from the sweat off her back.
we're talking in context to the book right?
