  • This is a song about the way lovemaking should be

  • Gordon Lightfoot is so consistent in his song-writing...truly great!

  • Thank you for posting this wonderful example of early G.L.

For those who despair over pop music of the day, look up Canada national radio and you will

discover the antidote in their morning and afternoon programs. Not only do you find the latest

Canadian artists, but worldwide artists (including G.L.) presented by hosts who share their

knowledge and love of music. All 5 time zones are served, so if I miss a show, it can be accessed online through their website.

  • Such a beautiful song, brings back so many memories!

  • what a strong song I wishlove could really be like that

  • i saw gordon in bristol tn last summer he is great love his music,,,,god bless you gordon

  • I have been to several of his concerts thru the past 25 yrs and altho he appeared thinner and a little less imposing, I still loved him/his music. Don't kno how many miles he has ridden with me over the yrs, singing along sometimes in tears late at nite

  • LEGEND

  • Another time, another generation....all of these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. So sad....

  • Get the audio from this tune at searchripgrab doht cohm.

  • Wow...Read about 5 comments below mine. "a 3 minute horror"....I wondered what kind of person would say such a thing..So I checked out their playlist....It contains TONS of MADONNA!!! hahahahahahaha!!!! What a stooge.

  • This is so sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Genius.

  • The 1970's may have been a rather tacky and tedious time for clothes, hair styles and music - but thankfully we had the likes of Gordon Lightfoot!

  • Wow - how beautiful.

  • When I lost everything, when everything was gone, I had this CD and life still had beauty, it hurt like hell still. But it gave me life again, no matter the pain. It was for moments beautiful.

  • Nice bass line.

  • I learned how to play guitar because of this man and Cat Stevens.

  • I've grown up with GL and not many people know this but when he came on ythe scene in 1966 he was already married with 2 children

  • Always puts a tear in my eye and a warm feeling in my heart when I hear this song. a lost love from 37 years ago loved me and we loved this song Gordon you have made the world a better place with songs like this

  • what a great voice

  • So hard to believe that music was once a balm to our restless nights or fettered minds Please ,, parents inroduce yorchildren to the music of the seveties. Intoduce them to all kinds of music!

  • @FromCarol my 4 year old daughter's have is Glen Campbell :)

"play it again- what a beautiful song" etc

  • No more greats like this to be found...The industry today is so aweful.

  • @tanderson1015

I'm 63 years old and I will agree with you. The best singers and SONGWRITERS are gone.

  • @surfside48 Lightfoot, McCartney, Dylan,,jimmy webb, and more, are all still with us you just don't know where to look

  • @surfside48

I am 40 years Old and I agree with you sir.

  • IMO, Gordon is the best all-around musical artist of all time. No qualifiers needed.

  • It''s so good to hear and see this .... not quite fully formed ..... just on the edge of greatness ......young ...... the high notes effortless ..... before the ill health took its tool. Thank you for posting.

  • Amazing musician, singer and songwriter ... and so handsome! :)

  • Great footage, thanks for posting!

  • tvteacher and Bangwhistle, you both hit it right on the head!

  • My god that brought a tear (or two) to my eye. What a beautiful performance. My god, look how young he was.

  • its easy to forget the great stuff GL has created over time - not a lot of airplay - thanks to youtube we can all enjoy these classics that rely more on harmony and melody - not overproduction

  • How I think how Canada should sound, the voice of Canada.

  • Each time I watch this particular video, I fall in love with the great man himself, you just cannot help it, and I dont want to ;) I`m so proud of Canada`a greatest talent, and yes he is so good looking, well Canadians are, and so cute...okay shall stop rabbiting on lol..

  • Gordon Lightfoot....ART......

  • Canada should be rightly proud of this Great Singer...love you Gordon, and must add you are without doubt the most handsome , and that beautiful voice and beautiful song has me in tears....

  • @HilaryMG Thankyou for the compliment from a true Canadian fan for over 40 years. One of my favorite songs he wrote is 'Stay Loose', which I can't seem to find anymore here on You Tube. Obscure yet just haunting and wonderful..

  • @vanislefan ..Well Gordon`s voice is soo beautiful, and how anyone dislikes this amazing song I shall never understand.Do you know I dont recall "Stay Loose" and it will annoy me now, so much that I shall do my very best to come across it, and you my friend will be the first to know ;) Goodness a voice is singing, but theres no video??? also a piano playing, just stopped, thats very strange, was it Gordon? Im not sure as it...actualy I dont know, nice surprise though :)

  • ,,, a Canadian icon now and always.

I think Johhny Cash- a Great himself-was a big fan too.

  • @DIVERSITYRECESSION3 Too bad you got no talent except a big mouth.

  • @brotherWes too right wes he cannot even spell the words right. If he cant spell and is also tone deaf he is the moran as he spells it(moron). He probably likes some obscure no talent can't sing rappers

  • He is without a doubt the best Canadian singer, goodness he was/is very handsome and all that with so much talent, plays the guitar brilliantly and I believe he wries his songs? he makes me proud to be half Canadian, thanks Dad :) Only wish I could see Gordon, but who knows? x

  • I just adore him, he`s sooo handsome and with that great voice and the talent this man has is extraordanary! well he`s Canadian, and for the Canadian in me I should just like to say Thanks Dad ;) Make`s me very proud...

  • I don't care what you think...This man as folk...in his hands he throws it to you, and plays it well...

One thing about all folk I ever heard? He has something to actually listening... except my Dead Dog... How many times we have tohear the same junky music about the same? That junky music about an old dead dog and how that thing was better than your girl?

He doesn't do that.. And... It's great!

  • Such a beautiful song, love it, love his voice.

  • His range of expression is so extreme. Compare this song to 'For Loving Me.' What a contrast between romance and cruelty! 'I've had a hundred just like you, so don't be blue.... I'll have a thousand 'for I'm through...'

  • Thank goodness we have this venue to see and hear artists like Gordon.

  • She comes down the stairs in this song. She comes and goes softly though in this song.

In "Stairway to Heaven" she climbs up the stairs. She's got more work to do in this version of the same story. Maybe she had to pick up some laundry or a bar of gold.

  • One of his best songs. So him perform at a small venue in 1977. Simply an awesome entertainer. Most people have never heard it. Everybody share this on Facebook and spread the word.

  • Gordon, you've brought so much peace to me for so many years... thank you!

  • Simply beautiful!

  • Love his music and love this song. His songs are always a triple threat - great writing, great singing and great musical arrangements. Oh and there are his looks!

  • through the years of my life, good or bad, happy or sad, gordon's songs could always make me feel alright

  • Love him to bits.. he is so cute in this video... I was born too late to have had the pleasure of seeing him in concert.....

  • @lenakatrine No you weren't. I just saw him a week ago from today. Not in his prime like he is here, but still a fantastic performer, especially for being 72 years old.

  • Gord ... you are still GOLD! You proved that again tonight in concert. Though time and ill health may have weathered you, there is no doubt you still believe in your music and mean every word you sing. Thank you for your music! ~

  • He look like the Dad from Malcom in the Middle!

  • I've only just become a great fan of this man, he has a haunting voice, I love him, does anyone know where he is now?

  • @sheenalett He has had some health issues lately, but he is still performing. His voice is not what it once was. I probably have about every album he has ever done. When I listen he truly takes me to a special place. I personally think one of his best is Black Day in July about the riots that happened in Detroit years back.

  • I have never hear longing so well expressed.... amazing

  • I WISH I HAD THE CHANCE TO SEE HIM IN HIS PRIME,OOOH WELL..THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE..JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER GORDEN LIGHTFOOT IS FROM ORILLIA ONTARIO AND ONLY LIVED IN THE STATES FOR A FEW YEARS AND THEN CAME BACK TO TORONTO..FOR ANY REAL FANS HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU...WHICH SONG DID HE WRITE AFTER HIS FIRST MARRIAGE FAILED?

  • @TheChaserking - I heard that he wrote "If Children Had Wings" after a failed marriage, but I don't know when he was married, for how long, or how many times.

  • Gordon's music has been with me for over 40 years, through some of the best & worst times of my life. He has an incredible talent and I will always be deeply grateful that he shares his words & music with us.

  • A most beautifyl song that I never get tired of.

  • This the classic baladeer, the one that many imitate and fail. Greatness personified in his prime. Listen to it when not in a hurry and feel your soul quieted. A great American, though he is Canadian.

  • What a beautiful recording, Gordi was the best back then and even in his older years now, he still does great. What a great performer, may God keep him here for many many more years.

  • He is still my favorite! Such an incredible talent!

  • Perhaps one of the loveliest songs ever...

  • We need to full circle some of our musical talents ,,This is unassumingly brilliant *

  • Is this for real? Don't see a mic anywhere.

  • I think we (Canadians) have come to take him for granted, and that's probably a mistake.

  • I commented that this was the prettiest song I had ever heard. I meant to add that it is so charmingly romantic and beautiful... it just melts me.

  • One of the prettiest songs I've ever heard...

  • The most beautiful vibrato on a male singer one could ever hear.

  • He's in his seventies now and STILL tours! That's incredible. Google him!

  • Yes he sure was VERY good looking when he was young.... I WISH I could have had the priviledge of seeing him in concert back then but I was born in '66...

    Oh well!

  • One of my many favorites of Gord singing and playing......play it again Gordon

  • Amazing song! Gordon is truly timeless!!

  • What a gorgeous man!!!! He is just one of a kind!

  • One of the best Scottish singers about

  • @dowling1981 If only he was Scottish...

    Gord is Canadian.

  • @ESREVERNIEFIL It is true that he has spent time in Canada, but he is originally from Glasgow, ken?

  • Comment removed

  • @dowling1981 Lightfoot was born in Orillia, Ontario, about 135 kilometers (84 mi) north of Toronto. Whoever told you he was from scotland is very very wrong. sorry.

  • @ESREVERNIEFIL It says on the internet that he is from East Glasgow, near Dalry. Have you seen him live?

  • @dowling1981 never say him live. Can you please give me the link or something that says he is from scotland? I really want to rip on whoever said he was from scotland lol. All you need to do is google him. there are hundreds of links proving he is Canadian. Wikipedia is the most accurate source on his life.

  • @dowling1981 also... Are you sure you're not thinking of Gordon Waller of Peter and Gordon Fame? He was around the same time period and IS from Scotland. Gordon Waller passed away a few years ago though, and Gordon Lightfoot is very much alive. Just trying to get to the root of your confusion.

  • @ESREVERNIEFIL Perhaps they are both from Glasgow, as I do believe Gordon Waller is Scottish. What other Scottish singers do you enjoy?

  • @dowling1981 Teenage Fanclub is one of my favorite bands period. Bandwagonesque was a brilliant album. Simple Minds has a few songs i liked back when i was younger. but as far as Gordon Lightfoot is concerned... I am resting my case. He is Canadian =) but you are free to believe what you want. Just as long as you enjoy his music. =)

  • @ESREVERNIEFIL He completes the Scottish collective. Have you enjoyed The Pogues of late?

  • You can't tell me it wasn't love at first sight for all the lovely ladies watching the show that night! :)

  • I have to agree with some of the other comments- he was so handsome when he was young! I always pictured him as a wandering minstrel in medieval days, wearing a frilly shirt and strumming a mandolin as he sang and told tales!

  • OH Christ Gordon!

  • What a beautiful song. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

  • The GREATEST of all folk singers. All of the ones that came after him, Taylor, Fogelberg, Brooks, cite him as their major influence. There will never be any quite as prolific or eloquent as the brilliant Gordon Lightfoot.

  • @tvteacher50 agreed. there is NO song of his that i WONT listen to, there are some ive not grown to love yet. but still i keep them in teh lineup

  • It's amazing how many great singers have come out of Canada....

  • THE MINSTREL OF THE DAWN AT HIS BEST!!!!

  • you rock Gord.

  • His voice really soothes me...

  • yes he was gourgeous! what a sexy song!

  • Gordon Lightfoot is one of those exceptional talents who doesn't need big production, big sets and dollops of hype. A guitar, a song and a voice are all he needs. Like Nick Drake, his songs have a timeless quality about them.

  • Comment removed

  • ... so good to tune in and find so many recent comments already here. His music is so alive still..yet he remains one of the greatest secrets...

  • Such a good performance of such a pretty song. So smooth a voice and he was careful not to screw up his face like a lot of the modern musicians do. (N.B. Is he cute as a button in this performance or what?)

  • I had forgotten how striking this man was! It's rare you see someone that beautiful with the talent to back him up. I haven't heard this song in years. It's so poetic!

  • He can still touch my heart as he did 40 years ago! Thanks a lot Gordon.

  • Awesome performer and songwriter ... one of the best!

    Starliner

  • I still regret the time circ 72-73 that he was playing at nearby Miami U. of Ohio. I'd already committed to some auto club activity. I've got a ticket to see him in Houston in Aug. I aim to see and hear him this time. Gord is as good a poet as ever wrote a line.

  • I forgot how much I loved him and his music! What a talent!

  • Long gone days of true talent. Now we have real garbage that is supposed to pass for music!

  • @rd1956 Like American Idol? Haha...that show is an embarrassment to music.

  • This song has always had a special meaning for me....thanks for posting!

  • He sure makes a woman feel loved by his music.

  • Wanted to marry him when I was 5. He was 40.

  • @roperierre

always have... since i was about 6...

  • This is one sexy song!

  • hes killin those young chicks .. a master

  • Gordon is a muscial genious ,he is a sensitive songwriter ,thats what it takes to shake the heart ,don,t slag him ,if you do ,you must have things to hide

  • A Canadian man I met at a conference 25 years ago said GL was sometimes in the news for wrecking his car while DUI. GL admits as much in his songs. Alcohol can be a symptom of another problem. I've wondered if perhaps he carried another heavy burden that made him self-medicate. "...until you walk a mile in his shoes". You know?

  • @409409ed My understanding is that GL stopped drinking about 20 years ago. Regarding your wondering whether Lightfoot "perhaps . . . carried another heavy burden that made him self-medicate," are you a psychologist or psychiatrist?

  • Usually only a guy who is really depressed (or broken off with someone their in love with) can write such beautiful lyrics and music. Anyone know if Gordon ever have a drinking or drug problem? Be interested to know....he writing/music reminds me of Hank Williams...

  • THATS A LIE

  • i think he just blew jonny away

  • How very beautiful still!!!

  • Favourite for me is "Now and Then"

  • Unlike most singer/songwriter's of the day, he can actually play well. A B45-12 is not an easy beast to tame, the fingerboard is so wide and he makes it sound exceptionally rich. His 12 string is instantly recognizable, especially the 8th note patterns like on the Trilogy, Long Way Back Home, Mountains and Maryann, and on into the night. Flat-picked or finger-picked, nobody plays 12 string like GML

  • @TerryTufts

Your version of "For Lovin Me" is spectacular!

  • @TerryTufts He is so modest about his PERFECT guitar playing, sometimes jokingly saying, "It's only four chords." He is one of the most incredible rhythm guitar players of all time. On the 6-string he is INCREDIBLE--on the 12-string he is MAJESTIC.

  • @bangwhistle69 He was so great with both Red Shea and Terry Clements. RIP, both of them.

  • see him again in paradise

  • He's still ALIVE!

  • I know, but i also see him in Paradise :D

  • he has one of thee best vibratos i have ever heard on a singer. SUCH a talented man.

  • He was ony 31 here! God, he was gorgeous! ;)

  • @binkle1

I had the pleasure of seeing Gordie sing this song when he was 31 (I was 20). Although I didn't realize it at the time, yes he was gorgeous (so was I, lol). I don't mean to dismiss so many other great Canadian writers (incredible talents from coast to coast), but Gordon is probably the best of all time. His music was a gigantic part of my late teens and early 20s, as I grew up with my brothers and shared the love of his music with my girlfriend. I'll never forget it... ever.

  • @binkle1 He was good-looking... for an older guy still is...

  • beautiful.....reminds me of an old & lost love....old flames may die, but I have an amazing new one that has set my heart on FIRE =)

  • Greetings from Kokomo, Indiana. My late stepmother, who was from Tilbury, Ontario, Canada, always told me that Canadians considered Gordon Lightfoot as their version of Bob Dylan and Ann Murray as their version of Carol King. If you want to hear great "oldies" from Lightfoot, pick up the CD "Gord's Gold". You won't be disappointed!

  • There has never been a writer like Gordon Lightfoot. He paints pictures with words and music. His music brings peace to my soul. No easy job! Thank you, Canada, for this amazing talent. Be assured he is beloved south of the border by fans who have followed him forever. I've seen him in person so often I have lost count. :-)

  • @ChrisCurtisFan i totally agree with you - he is one of the more understated but fantastic musicans of all time - very precious to those who know him -

  • @ChrisCurtisFan Indeed- anytime there is a discussion about the great singer / songwriters of the last 50 years, Gordon's name is almost never mentioned in conversation. It is always Paul McCartney this, or Neil Diamond that, or Paul Simon, or David Gates. Not that they weren't good, because they were. But I think Gordon's body of work has stood the test of time as well as theirs.

  • @rayjr62 David Gates? Hahahahaha...no, I don't think David Gates' name gets mentioned much in that company. Even though I hate Neil Diamond, I still wouldn't put Gates in the category with those other names. But you're right about Lightfoot, of course. (ponders::::gates? LOL. Sheesh)

  • @rickcee Yes, David Gates. His talent was at the forefront of the singer / songwriter era, like him or not. I would put his talent in the same category as the others. I would even include James Taylor in that same category as well (even though personally, I can't stand him).

  • @rayjr62 Now you've REALLY committed sacrilege. James Taylor is a genius. Are we talking about the David Gates of the ill-fated group, "Bread"? If so, I'm laughing out loud right now. He's ridiculous. You have the audacity to mention him in the same breath as the incredible James Taylor? Whoa. What planet are you on?

  • @rickcee I am posting my opinion. So, I have the audacity to mention anyone I want. I never said James Taylor wasn't any good. I said cannot stand him.

Please, focus. You'd be surprised how much you would learn if you would only try.

  • @rayjr62 Ray...I have no problem with you posting or having an opinion. As for your like or dislike of J.T., no problem there either, since appreciation for music and art is mostly subjective. But don't for a moment think that with THAT taste of yours that you have anything to "teach" anyone. Besides....do you really think that I come on YouTube to "learn"? hahahaha.

  • @ChrisCurtisFan You are so right, and I welcome a civil note on Youtube. I hate all the, erm, hate! We love the same music--let's enjoy it! Cheers to you mate!

  • The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald will always be my favorite by him (and one of the best songs EVER), but I have to say that this is exquisite-man, they don't make beautiful music like this anymore...most of it is obscene garbage if you ask me... it is so sad what happened to his unique voice.... :(

  • kitten .. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one his best .. I also like Softly, though my favorate Lightfoot song is still 'The Way I Feel' .. Have you ever heard that one?

  • @straydog02....thanks for sending me "The Way I Feel"- no, I had never heard it before, and it is definitely a different kind of song..some real fast playing in there too... it is good, but I guess I always compare everything to "EF" and "Softly"... would love to hear your cover.. maybe one day!

  • HE WROTE THIS FOR HIS WIFE AT THE TIME, Britta, also the mother of their 2 children, Fred and Ingrid

  • Canadians have a lot to be proud of and Gordon Lightfoot is one of our beloved treasures. A mountain of talent.

  • Hey, I have a friend of man that can't stand him. (I think it's because Gordon is a man lol.) Guys seem to hate guys that can make their women swoon lol. I love his voice and mis that style of music. It's sad because of all the different kinds of music that still exists I feel the storyteller is the most beautiful and creative. Thanks Gordon for making this lady smile.

  • HE'S JUST JEALOUS

  • Thanks for the video icepick141

  • This is poetry put to music in it's most simple and brilliant form. The words invoke pictures made to move and colored by the music. Pure art.

  • @jackbad2 so true...it is excruciatingly beautiful and the epitome of tender love between a man and a woman....I am a lifelong poet, but unfortunately don't know how to write music....but I tell you what- the man that sings something like this to me while playing guitar would probably be the perfect man for me....(it is my dream, anyway....) :) God bless and take care!

    Tami

  • wonderful song, this man is a genius.

  • Till' the day i die ,i will keep this song in my heart .........timeless.

  • Yesterday was Gordon's 71st birthday! So I thought I'd check a few videos to share on facebook. This is the one I chose... one of my faves. What a voice he had back then.

  • Once upon a time, for my lost love.

  • I remember when this song was new - I watch this now and I'm overwhelmed by the youth and the depth it took for one so young to have written this. I've loved this song on so many levels and now I'm absolutely amazed by the depth.

  • Comment removed

  • I can appreciate these comments-it is definitely art...and I am a poet, so when I first heard it, I thought it was quite lovely... :) take care!

    Tami

  • I'm sighing too . . . what a song, what a voice, what a gorgeous guy! :) I love the way he sings from 1:38: "and she is in my arms once mo-O-ore." Thanks for posting this wonderful clip.

  • wow! what a handsome guy!
