You don't have to add stitches but I don't know why you would do a provisional cast on unless you needed live stitches. Otherwise, you are just going to have to bind them off. I suppose you could use a sewn bind off method though and end up with a different looking cast-on edge. You could also add some kind of fancy edging.
When using a provisional cast on, do you actually have to add stitches to the other end once you remove the cast on edge, or can you just leave it as is and have a nice clean edge?
