Twice as expensive as the iPad. Also thice as thick and twice as heavy. 1.16 KG vs 680 grams for the iPad. Batterylife is rediculous vs the iPad and try holding 1,16 KG in one hand, holding a pen in your other hand while you are sitting in a crowded train ! It is utterly useless and it will fail !
Try drawing, taking notes and running Photoshop on an iPad. The first two are not easy and the last one is impossible. This EP121 tablet is not a "toy" and is meant to do some serious work since it has the full Windows 7 operating system. You can't compare the two it's like apples and oranges. See it more as a laptop in a tablet form factor.
@TheAbyssarts It does not do this with the iPad, or any mainstream streamlined tablet/smartphone for that matter. Explain that? I suspect the screen on the Slate was meant for laptops, not tablets.
extend the battery life to 8 hours and weight roughly to sub-1kg and it will be my next buy. until then i will just take the ipad for couch surfing, and combine it with goodreader for taking notes in class.
Thanks , I'm fed up by useless nice looking devices like ipad, etc. Please give me something i can use in real life. (3 hours battery time?? ) Who attend colleges wich has 3 hours a day ?
@roffpoff Yes, the Wacom active digitizer means this tablet can be used for serious note taking. When the pen is in range, the capacitive layer will turn off for palm rejection. The writing captured in both Journal and OneNote is accurate and smooth. It's basically a full Wacom tablet, WIndows 7 on a core i5, plenty of RAM (4GB) and a good SSD. This one is definitely a real computer with a real digitizer for pen input, way more than a toy. Only drawback is 3 hour battery life.
@violajack80 it seems this tablet is good in note taking or writing journals, if i'm going to buy this device, do i need to buy a software which deals in taking notes or is it already provided in the Asus tablet?
@fleshy2000 Windows Journal (the program I demonstrated writing in) comes free with any version of Windows 7 above Starter, which includes the EP121. You can find it in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Tablet PC. For better organization and more advanced features, I recommend any version of Office that includes OneNote (I used Home and Student myself).
@HUNTEROFNEW Great, can you give me a short report , do it really replace paper ? If I go for slate, can I forget to buy paper next year for notetakink?
the lag with the artrage brush may be because you were using a large watercolor brush - it is sometimes laggy even on my system which was built to use that software. If you can, you should try to draw with the other brushes (pencils, charcoal, airbrush etc) with NO apps running in background. Painting software tends to be a resource hog when "real media" simulation is concerned (on the other hand, on my iPad the Auryn Ink app does wonderful watercolors with no lag at all... go figure).
@umbra682000 I just grabbed the thing that looked like it might demonstrate pressure sensitivity the best. I'm not an artist, but I think I'll have to learn more about this software to better demonstrate it for those who are. I managed to grab a follow up at the Microsoft booth when someone who can actually draw was playing with the tablet. I've added the link to the description.
My system is running an old Core 2 duo and an 8800 gt and I am getting no lag with any brushes. Resolution is cranked to 1920x1200 as well.
Is the ArtRage program GPU accelerated? I think the lack of a dedicated graphics chip, in combination with the rather slow 1.3 ghz dual-core might be to blame.
I'll definitely be waiting for some reviews by artists before considering this tablet.
@ufee are you running Artrage Pro? try the watercolor brush at size 100 on a large image . My system was built to use this software, and still it lags a bit (very little, you notice it only with large brushstrokes with the watercolor brush, all other brushes are fine). I'm talking about a split second lag. The one on the Asus videos is certainly worse. But what really irks me is the 3 hours battery life of what could have been an excellent machine!
I look forward to hold one in my hands to see if I can use for professional work. Currently I work on a cintiq but the portability of this might persuade me to buy it. Is the surface very hot (a major problem with my old cintiq)?
@umbra682000 Not at all, these demo units had been running all day, and while the back was warm, I didn't notice any heat coming from the screen that would make it uncomfortable to have a hand laying on it.
@umbra682000 Nope, you can plop your hand down comfortably on the screen. Once the pen tip is in range, the capacitive touch is turned off. And the pen hover distance is pretty high, so getting the pen within about an inch will turn off the touch.
@violajack80 I also thought that it would not be tilt sensitive, but then I thought that this tablet uses the same pen as my old Artz II-Ultrapad Wacom tablet, so there's still a small possibility about it, but very remote I agree.
Thanks for the video. There's certainly an abnormal amount of lag in your Artrage brushstrokes, maybe its due the tool used or because there was another cpu consuming program running on the background ? Other videos of this tablet showed no lag even with other larger brushe. Anyhow I think it should be a punctua problem and I'm still very interested about this tablet for doing graphic artwork. At least there is a tablet with reasonable price that allows to do that!
@tonihott2 You're right. I went back to the demo unit they had at the microsoft booth today, and found that my second impression was much better than the first. I got some video of an actual artist working with art rage and it seemed to b ev responding just fine. The slate was also lighter than I had remembered it I'll try to get today's better art rage demo uploaded as a follow up to this one.
@violajack80 Oh thank you for that, I'm digging as much videos about artwork done with this tablet as I can :], I'd love to see your second impression on it.
the accelerometer is probably fast, but windows cant switch between modes that fast... just so you know. ;)

When u write with ur hands touching the screen, can the tablet tell the differences between the pen and ur hand?

Looked like the graphic drivers weren't installed judging by the toolbar/art rage.

@IcyNami when another camera records a monitor or screen , the camera picks up the frame rate which your human eyes can not see

Do you have to float your hand while using the pen, or can you rest it on the surface of the screen without accidentally drawing with it?

Is the pen input pressure sensitive in any way? Does it recognize the pen's tilt?

@umbra682000 Pressure sensitive - yes. Tilt - no (or at least I don't think so).

Oh and about the slow accelerometer, I think it's working fine but certqinly
Windows 7 is simply too much even for desktops to allow the kind of fast rotation that ipad's operting system allows.
