Anthony Drennan didnt to TOO bad but I thought Nir did pretty good on the drums. Considering the circumstances it really could have been worse but it was good for what it was. CAS is still a good album. You're stepping into Hackett and Collins territory. NO ONE is gonna be as good as the originals but these guys did a good job. IMO
i actually REALLY like the solo, but i think the drummer completely F*CKS the anticipated reprise at 4:13, and it really disrupts the atmosphere for me to the point where the i stop and come back down, with a frown on my face.
My favorite band playing horrible versions of every song on this tour. And Tony Banks keyboard sounds kept getting cheesier and cheesier over time. I could find better sounds on a Casio Tony!!!!!
I do like the solo here. No it isn't as good as Steve or Dayrls but considering this was his first tour with playing it he does really nice. I think the thing I like the most is the tone.
Sorry secondtribe, gotta disagree. Daryl's playing on this song is much stronger and much more consistant. The reason they didn't allow this guy to play with them in 2007 is obvious. Daryl has been a part of Genesis live for over 30 years, this guy played with them for what, a couple months? His playing just doesn't stand up to either Daryl's or Steve's.

Great solo, miles better that Daryl Stuermer's. I wonder why they let Anto off in 2007 tour. He really feels this song, and Daryl seems to get tired playing this.
@3SJL209 Daryl left Genesis when Phil did- and the reason to why was obvious. He was involved in Phil's career every step of the way, whereas with Genesis his role was regulated to touring member. Chester had commitments at the time.
A nice change up...i applaud this performance..you just gotta admire Anthony's own take on this..very creative..need i say the man is smooth...make's what is difficult look easy...gotta give it up for NirZ also!
Ogni nota in più rispetto all'assolo di Steve saprei io dove posizionargliela.. Che affronto interpretare in questo modo rozzo uno dei brani più magici della storia del prog. Anche il batterista non ha la finezza espressiva del brano originario.
this solo really REALLY! SUCKS! IT'S LIKE A NONSENSE JAMMING SESSION, THAT GUY DOES NOT HAVE ANY STYLE TO PLAY GENESIS, NO ONE WILL EVER REPLACE MR. HACKETT, AND THAT NONE OF YOU CAN TELL ME I'M WRONG! ALSO THIS VERSION OF THE ENTIRE SONG DOESN'T HAVE ANY FEELING I MUST SAY
@Tsnore I wonder if Gabriel returning to Genesis is somewhat like Lionel Ritchie returning to The Commodores. It would be worthwhile to make great songwriting in to great songs, but it might be akin to working in tough-as-hell conditions. I thought there were more than a couple of egos and/or muses jousting for position in the songsmiths' workshop.
Chester was semi retired when this tour happened (From Chapter and verse) Phil even had a different drummer for 1994 and 1997 tours. I agree Nir Z is a good drummer but needs some .....umph
The drumming is technically good, but boring. No sense of dynamics or emotion. What a waste on an amazing TB song that still moves me. I'd would have loved to heard Ray sing the vocal part.
Better than Phil on drums ?!!! Slightly different maybe, not better, Phil hit perfection in his playing, this to me sounds a little bit 'session player' to me
Why did they hire that awful guitar player; no personality, just boring. Sounds like try out night. I''m a big fan of Nir Z, he's one of the best studio drummers out there, but somehow it all lacks passion. Wierd, 'cause you can hear the bass and the keyboards still have the original feel. Doesn't blend. Boy, am I picky - but I should be - it's Genesis!
I certainly agree about Nir Z. But, I think that Anthony Drenon is not a bad guitar player at all. He's not Hackett, but I think he does the job well enough.
Rumor, is he wanted to be a full band member...something Banks and Rutherford weren't prepared to do. Still, I have to wonder that tour would have sounded with him getting as the only drummer for the first time.
MIke has said in interviews that he cannot play this solo very well and that is the case with most of Steve's stuff, so thats why Mike sticks to bass for most of the Gabriel stuff.
Steve is obviously the best, but this a good second. - captures some the 'moodiness' of the original, but with some nice tasteful original lick thrown in. Can't stand Daryll's fretw***ing traversty.
Guitar work is sub-standard. This guy just doesn't bring to the table what Steve and Daryl did. Sounds like tribute band guitar work. Drumming could be a little better too, but the drumming is better than this lousy guitar work.
I wouldn´t put Daryl´s work at the same level than Steve´s. I love this song in every version, but I think that the original studio version, with its little amount of notes, is unsurpassed in emotion.
The whole studio version, with all its subtle arrangements, has an oldie melancholy that kills me.
Not the best I've heard. NirZ- good drummer, but his drumming just doesn't match the power of Chester's and definitely not Phil's. The guitar solo is fair- but lacks the fire of Daryl's playing and the atmosphere of Steve's.
I'm sorry but this version is hard to sit through. Steve's version Hands down is the best, I like Struemer's version as well, both different, both played with a sense of wisdom. This guy sounds like struemer trying to sound like Hackett......the solo just doesn't do it for me, and a horrible ending at that as well.
This was such a bizarre period... Not only did Rutherford and Banks hire a twenty-something to front the band, but two new backing musicians as well. It all had little to do with Genesis, in my opinion, and is interesting only as a curiosum. Still, I'm very grateful you have posted this - it's hard tome come by material from this time, and this version isn't bad after all.
Excellent rendition - the best since Steve Hackett left. I prefer the sound of Nir on his own to Phil/Chester's flashy bombastics. And Drennan's sympathetic soloing here is miles better than Stuermer's jazz-rock/hair metal atrocity.
I don´t care what people say..the truth is that this version of genesis plays very good.. better than "the real thing" on the very reacent tour.and this song expecially sounds beautiful..with the solo by mr Drennan. And Nir´s heavy and carefull drumming rocks!! "There must be some other way" is another Gem from this tour
