INMO this concert for Beatrix has some of Gheorghiu's best work on the net. thanks for downloading!
just heard her sing "Adriana Lecouvreur" with Kaufmann last night at Carnegie Hall in NYC - she was electrifying and brought down the house. They say Solti cried for joy when he first heard her ("this girl can do everything!"). I can understand why!
As always, Gheorgiu is a terrific Marguerite. Very passionate. Not that it matters, but her wardrobe here isn't good and she is always in great couture. But here she looks like a witch in that black robe-dress, or Morticia Addams or a Goth. My Goth friend from high school dressed up like this every day!
@khothye I like Angela...but something about her French seems unnatural to me...perhaps her Romanian background? Kiri is my favorite of all time, but Angela held her own here.
@putzilutzi Actually I do speak french, and I DO know what I am talking about. I'm not insulting Angela at all here, she has better French diction than most singers, I was just saying it's hard to understand at times, perhaps it's just her way of adjusting vowels to get a more beautiful tone!
@voltoarchi Nível o que meu caro? Aposto que se você abrir essa boca suja nem cachorro vai aguentar. Portanto, desça desse pedestal e aprecie o que um ser humano honesto é capaz de produzir com seu próprio corpo e alma. Ciau babaca.
I ADORE her interpretation and her remarkable singing of this aria! She has managed to convey Marguerite's shyness, naivety, innocence and childishness. And her French is superb! I have a recording of Faust with Corelli and Sutherland, and I bought it only for Corelli's sake, because Angela is much better Marguerite than Sutherland. Sutherland's technique is flawless, but her interpretation is rather neutral and indifferent.
In addition to Doamnele Gheorghiu's flawless performance, I love how the first and second violins pull their bows away in a flourish at the end...you can tell they really enjoyed that!
she had a great voice but it seamed as if she was rushing it. i prefer the version in the 1989 phantom of the opera with Robert Englund. Nancy Fontana was singing.
I don't normally care for her, but unlike Netrebko (who I think is being overhyped and doesn't live up to the hype for me), Angela is the real deal. She's got a gorgeous voice and she's beautiful and she sings without the pretentiousness of someone like Renee Fleming. I just wish that Angela would actually show up to rehearsals and/or performances. She's developing a bad rep.
Right on Schemel. I cannot suffer Fleming's pretentiousness. Again, I say in this repretoire, de los Angeles is in a class unto herself. And again, I say that after 35 years of listening to her, this aria is as fresh as when I first heard it over thirty-five years ago. Callas, for example DOEs NOT wear well even when I like her, which is rare.
@sschimel I'm on the same planet with you on that! I am not a fan of angela's voice ans manner of singing, but I respect her as a personality unlike Netrebko, for example, and she's absolutely fantastic as a Margaritte there! Brava!!
@sschimel Renee isn't pretentious, she finds the lyricism and sensuality in every piece of music she sings-- but once in a while I like a "simpler" version. This is good. I think my favorites are Renata Tebaldi and Anna Moffo. A lot of people are crazy about Sutherland and de los Angeles. What a piece-- right? We never get tired of hearing it!
The ease and fluidity with which she sang this aria is just remarkable. This is one aspect that distinguishes a great soprano from lesser ones. She seemed to be enjoying every moment of this performance.
What a beautiful performer in this role! I usually don't like her, but her voice suits this music very well. I also love her as Mimi. But there's not a whole lot i like her on.
Victoria de los Angeles? Listen to her Jewel Song and you'll think you're with a young woman just on the edge of love, not a spinto giving a boom performance in the opera hall totally out of keeping with the character, as lovely as her singing is.
you really don't think so? there are very few truly dramatic sopranos and many more lyrics, but not that many lyric or, even rarer, dramatic coloraturas--my guess is you'd call AG a lyric and NOT a lyric-coloratura? contrary to my view including that i think that at times she pushes it a bit. but listening to her again at this moment, i agree she sounds great, but where is the shy, naive girl of the opera?
I think she could be called a spinto, a dramatic might be a bit much. However, what you call a 'booming spinto performance' is that way this role is usually cast, while margueritte is supposed to be a shy naive girl, the reality of the situation is this aria sits in spinto range, lyrics really just cant make low Bs sound good, while spintos like AG have got some power and projection down low. The range is B3 to B5, a lyric or coloratura role would likely go higher, and probably not as low.
AG a spinto? When you consider Tebaldi as a spinto (and who didn't?), it's a bit quizzical. But interesting and thanks for the technical pointers. De los Angeles never had problems in the middle or low ranges and rarely in the upper, especially in the role of Marguerite, one of her best at the Met! And i love her CARMEN.
i think she is a full lyric soprano..even though her voice has dramatic capalities..the overall voice is light..i think her voice would be heavier if she were a spinto..
I think perhaps youre thinking in the wrong octave notation, which system is used does differ by country but youre from the united states as well. In the letter-number octave scheme we use in this country the number applies to a C and the octave above it, up to but excluding the next C an octave higher, which is numbered one didgit higher. Middle C is C4, soprano C is C6, the queen on the night Aria has an F6, and B6 would be the B above that, which would be like mado robin territory haha

If I were a woman and could sing like that, I'd also wear trousers.
Listen to the voice! So what if her clothes make her look like a witch, I like her style. It's different and fresh!

Wow, I'm impressed, she has all the elements for a perfect Margerite, I think the best since Kiri. Has she record the complete opera?
