This is another movie that I saw when it first came out. Lol with my mother, but that was and still is my mother. She like going to the movies and she knew my love of horror films. I have to say that this movie when I first saw it, creep me out. The scene with the chicken and the knife. The sound effects, lol just got to me and everyone in the movie house. Good movie and with the great Mr. Marshall, need I say more.
This was pulled from theaters as soon as it was released when Warner Bros threatened AI with a lawsuit. I've owned my own bootleg copy of this for almost 10 years because I enjoy good schlock. No harm no foul.Beyond the Door is another good rip off. Its entertainment not politics.
I wouldn't call this a rip-off. Instead I refer to this as a variation of the exorcist. A re-telling of the story if you will. As the poster of the video said, there were lots of other versions of it and this just happens to be one of them. Even though this was made long before I was born, I prefer this one over the other one...for obvious reasons of course ;-)
Nice! The priest is William Marshall, aka: The King of Cartoons on Pee Wee's Playhouse, aka: Blacula, aka: Richard Daystrom the guy who created the M5 computer in the Star Trek episode "The Ultimate Computer."
That guy has crossed over into everything. He's awesome!
Its too bad black intellectuals killed the blaxploitation movement. At least the filmmakers did more than put rappers in a film filled with bad acting anda story about a "rapper who got dissed". Please bring back diverse black filmmaking! ABBY is a classic, fool!
Hey Everyone, I know a torrent site where you can download most of the Blaxploitation films !! Send me a PM and label the header "Blaxploitation" if your interested, can youuuuuu DIGGITT!!!!!
William Marshall is handsome as ever. I wish someone would put this whole up. The girl who plays Abby was Goldies home girl in The Mack. Another good movie.
carol speed mention that they did film a scene when her head spins around but they cut that scene out, also about some guy ass burst into flames mabe that one was in a special print of abby, anyway they need to find a good clean copy & put it on dvd. And someone mention the manitou, well that director of that film is the same person who did abby, william girdler.
I knew this chick tooked familiar. Carol Speed. And before she made her mark in blaxploitation, she left Lamont Sanford at the altar in an episode of Sanford and Son
Actor William Marshall is the only reason I would sit through this. I'm thinking if they hadn't gotten James Earl Jones, Marshall's voice would've been befitting Lord Darth Vader.
Sorry to here that I just hope he was happy. He was very talented and never appreciated. He should have been up there with Jamel Earl Jones. I don't know if acted in Europe or not.
@jrcarter9175 Back in the 70's, Hollywood should've done a loose, cookie cutter switch blaxploitation flick like The godfather and put Wiliam marshall in the lead. Any movie Jim Brown did, William Marshall could done many X's better
@shirazhound I actually like Marshall's voice more than Earl Jones's! As well as Ted Cassidy, Orson Welles, Paul Robeson, Thurl Ravenscroft, Lorne Greene, and Geoffrey Holder. Marshall's voice has that booming, velvety quality that resounds through a room with an uncanny lack of effort. If there were only more films--more good films, for that matter--that started Marshall. If he were only more renowned.
"I got Abby! What do you think of my powers now?" Ha Ha! My favorite line in the movie.Frankievernon, the movie is on dvd now and can be ordered online. Just do a google serach.
ahha well i guess im too old for that.lol i love to here others view points.. it can help me sharpen my awareness as to how people view the exact same things as individuals. without that one cannot learn.. diffrence of opinion is a blessing.. or else everything would be 'black' no pun intended lol
i have to say, it's really good to see people with different viewpoints be able to come to some kind of understanding of one another without resorting to the usual flame wars and insults.
william girdler could have been pink with green spots! i dont care who produced the film... my argument is that the film is being classed as the 'black exorcist' wich means it is 'exactly' the same film but with black people acting in it... perhaps people should choose their words carefully, it may well be similar to the excorsist, but calling somthing the 'black' version of anything means it has no identity within itself.. and that was my point.
Fortunatly we've made progress out of this era when it wasn't yet frowned upon to call a movie the "black exorcist", but the distributors themselves called it that for marketing purposes. "Exorcist" was a good word to have associated with your movie to get people to come see it, "black" was added to bring in their target audience. "Abby" may be unique in its own way but it was made just to make money.
im not really concerned with anything other than stating the 'FACT' that having watched this film a hundred or more times it is and never has been anything like the excorsist...this is a grown ass woman who is married among other non similar things between Abby and the excorsists Raven, im just tired of people not giving the film its dues as an origional peice of work and not a rip off... copy.. duplicate etc...
It's a KNOCK-OFF of "The Exorcist" in the same vein as "Beyond the Door", "The Manitou" and many other 70s films made after "The Exorcist" were. They took an element from a successful horror film and went their own direction with it. Incidently the filmmaker was a white guy named William Girdler so I don't know how that might suddenly change your opinion about things.
actually this is not a rip off of the excorsist.. it bears no resembelence... but i guess any time black people try to do summn white people always say we stealing.. i guess they never stole our rock and roll.. dress style.. rap..the list is not exhaustive!
hey man, i think you're misunderstanding me. i genuinely LIKE all of the "blaxploitation" movies i've posted here. and many many others as well. and of course you're right about rock, rap, etcetera. except that i wouldn't use the word "steal" - the last time i checked, black folks were still allowed to make rap records too. and some of 'em are even better than marky mark and vanilla ice. that was a joke. (continued...)
william marshall was truly a great american actor, and carol speed is always fun to watch. pam grier, bernie casey, rudy ray moore...you know what? i'm going to stop there. because i could come up with a list great black actors a mile long. i believe fucking ossie davis was a straight up fucking national treasure for chrissakes, and i actually shed a few tears when i found out he passed on. (continued...)
and that's just touching on some black ACTORS who were most prominent in another decade, to say nothing the black activists, thinkers, politicians, religious leaders (even though i'm an atheist), writers, musicians, and all other black artists of all types past and present who have made rich, vital contributions to the world and to this country. (continued...)
if i said anything that made you think that i don't have proper respect for any of that shit, that i think otherwise, then i do apologize. it's not what i meant. and anyone who doesn't feel the same way would not be a close friend of mine. (continued...)
btw you did know that the director and most of the people responsible for the production of this movie were all whitey, right? if i'm cracking on anyone at all concerning this flick, it's them. so are we cool here?

I don't see this or Beyond the Door as an exorcist rip off. The one that is really an exorcist rip off is Amityville 2: the Posession.
