Kansas's guitar player Kerry Livgren wrote the song "Dust in the Wind" in 1977. It was released in 1978, about four years before Scorpions did their cover version.
To correct my last reply, the Scorpions' version actually came out in 2001, not 1981. So their cover version was released about 23 years after Kansas' original.
