You guys have to remember, this video came out almost 9 YEARS ago. When this was first leaked on the net, it was very mysterious and amazing. No one actually knew what the Dreamcast was, or what it was capable of.
They had Kowloon before Tower of Babel. This demo was conceptualized after Shenmue's setting, but modified a little so to not become too revealing. At the time Shenmue was still very secretive, it was only called Project Berkeley but the Tower of Babel demo was highly touted as being made by AM2, which was working on Project Berkeley. Kowloon was inspired by Suzuki's trip to China, however the dynamics of camera of Tower of Babel were used in the cinematic execution of Kowloon.
There IS a connection between Tower of Babel demo and Shenmue.
Before Shenmue was called Shenmue, and before it was called Project Berkley, it was either officially or unofficially called
Virtua Fighter RPG.
One of the areas that was playable in Virtua Fighter RPG, as it was in development, was the Tower of Babel.
The Tower of Babel tech demo was the basis for the massive apartment buildings, Kowloon Tower, in the beta version of Shenmue, which showed up in Shenmue II.
anyone notice the way to camera sweeps around the city is a little like the way it was done in the chinese city in Shenmue 2?...(cant remember what the city was called now)
glad that you like it :) yup, it's an interesting video, you are right to say that it could even be a ShenMue beta/alpha, i'll try to find a better one and maybe the others Dreamcast tech demo..
Yeah, that would be ace. It's only just occurred to me that I have never seen any of the demos in action, just screenshots. I especially would like to see the demo of the that Sega boss' head.

I also meant to say that the Tower of Babel demo was also the basis for the entire city of Kowloon in Shenmue II, not just Kowloon Tower.

Does anyone know if background music is exclusive to this demo or maybe it did show up in a real dreamcast game? If so, title please. :)

It's strange because the music is the main theme of Kitano's movie "a scene at the sea". You can find it in youtube.

Sounds very similar...but I'm not sure if it's the same. Maybe it was inspired by that movie.

Actually, I was wrong. This is not the music of "a scene at the sea" but "kids return". An another film by Kitano.

Ah yes, you are right. Thank you very much! I've loved this song for years. Good to know that I can actually buy it!

This video has nothing to do with Shenmue. It's the very first demo created for Dreamcast. It was made in 1997.

Shenmue was in production back when the Saturn was around. What's your point? Shenmue made the jump from Saturn to Dreamcast.

Wow! What an amazing video! All kidding aside though, it's nice to see the origins of Shenmue. Thanks for uploading that.
