@MeYadakun stanely Kubrick was on the list. Full metal jacket, 2001: A space odyssey, and Barry Lyndon. There may even have been more that I don't know of.
Good list, although I'm surprised to see Schindler's List so low. I'd consider that the greatest movie of the last 40 years or so. I'm also surprised to see Blue Velvet so high. Not that that's a bad thing though, since it's my favorite movie of the 1980s.
Far from greatest list as a whole, but you have many good and some bad choices, and many of the films that deserve to be on list. Just keep watching great films and you will see what kind of great art film is in the world, I think you are on right track, just keep watching films. Check up my list of best films, if you have time.
No Ip Man, The Killer, Color Purple, Glory, Legends of the Fall, La Femme Nikita, This Boy's Life, Slap Shot, Return of the Dragon or The Wild Bunch?!?!?!
@GILLYRUTH Easy Rider is an important film that I (along with many others) really appreciate. I agree with you, Conan is a shit sandwich of a film, but Excaliber isn't terrible.
@blablaidontcarewhour Nobody can really tear down your list ,,its yours nothing I say is gonna change it for you .Quite right.Excaliber s ok,,,the whole things shot in mid range,,though giving it a made for television look, that Braveheart was the antipathis of.(not sure all my spellings are as good as film observations)
Nice one and interesting. But you forget Lubitsch, Keaton and italian cinema from the 60's (save for one Fellini movie, but no Visconti's !). I would have put Murnau's Faust in the ten first and Kiss me deadly rather than Dirty dozen. Love Kurosawa and Bergman too. thanks, it made me think and I would have a lot more to say. Please excuse my english.
@cf19d Saving Private Ryan, apart from the assault on Omaha Beach, is nothing but Oscarbaiting men-on-a-mission drivel. Platoon is the film where Namvets get to whine about how horrible some of them thought it was to be in a war that killed almost 60.000 americans and (conservative estimate) 1 million vietnamese. Godfather 1&2 is on the list.
great list mate.....i'm only 21 but i love almost all of these, especially happy to see the stalker in at no.2, surprised that andrei rublev doesn't get appreciated though. love bergman, kurosawa, fellinin and welles. you have great taste...
The Crow (1 not 2), Phantom of the Opera (new), (Repo) The Genetic Opera, Titanic, Harry Potter (sales were amazing) are just a few of my favorties....
One off-beat nomination I have is the original "Let the Right One In". Maybe I will be in the tiny minority, but there is something about that movie that I find striking. The lead performances by the kids was incredible for the story. My favorite vampire movie by far.
I really enjoyed it, thanks. However, I think Schindler List deserves more. Not for a particular reason, but for some details like Ralph Fiennes as Amon (that was one of the best interpretations I've seen), the red girl, the soundtrack... All that complete a great film.
BTW, This is MUCH better than the top 90 list, because that didn't have Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia, BOTH of which would have been in my top 10. But several honorable mentions that should have been added would be Fitzcaraldo, The Public Enemy, Planet of The Apes (1968 one, not the new one), The Great Escape, Superman I and II, Rushmore, Lost In Translation, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Outlaw Josey Wales...etc.
I dunno, I still don't get this list...if these aren't your personal favs, then how to you specifically claim they are "great"? Great by what standard? Was box-office appeal a factor, because you missed some obvious one there like Saving Private Ryan, Titantic, etc.
Great overall list, I'm so relieved about that clarification of "The Postman"! Glad to see "Seven Samurai" in its rightful place along with so many other great war films. Hail Kurosawa!
Unsurprisingly, your list is heavily skewed toward "Western" films (Kurosawa was especially influenced by American legends like John Ford). The top 5 or 6 of any list is always the most interesting to me. At least we share a love of 'Seven Samurai' - it's in my top three. Fun stuff. Thanks.
the first time i saw "leon" i did not like it i found it to be over the top i have watched it twice since and i stil find the movie wanting in many areas . gary oldman is one of my favorit actors and yet i think its one of his worst performances. im not saying its all bad im just saying it doesnt deserve a place among the top 120 films ...in my humble opinion.
Certainly a lot of great choices...but have you watched any of Paul Thomas Anderson's films? If you like good cinematography and good writing, check out Magnolia and There Will Be Blood.
Lovely list, man. Of course, as with any list, there are entries I don't agree with (Pride and Prejudice, Scarface, LOTR), but I enjoy most of the films listed. As for the order, I don't know why so many people have been whining about it. Certainly, the films included are more important that their placements on the list. Ordering is a bitch. lol I was giddy to see Stalker so high up. Love that movie to death.
Well done, I could quibble with a few choices( I would have put the original The Thing instead of the remake) but that's more personal tastes. Glad to see Kurosawa getting the top spot.
this is really mixed up big time. But still can't believe you didn't involve 12 angry men or Hustler, Taxi Driver maybe Some Luc Besson (Nikita or Leon) Anyway I'm glad you like Kurosawa. Great list, definitely gave me a few ideas what to look for:)
Thank you very much indeed, MrRoekkum! :-) This was a very pleasant review and a reminder of so many films I've enjoyed myself. And as you say, the order is not the most important thing. I'll be sure to check up on a few of your recommendations.
Dont really agree with the order of a few, but still, from the ones ive seen, good movies. However, i deffinetly would have put Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream, Eternal Sunshine, and The Big Lebowski
@mario102395 your right man, those films deserve to be on this list. infact dumb and dumberer and ace ventura pet dective jr need to be on this list. you have a great taste in movies
Surely The Empire Strikes back is a better movie than A New Hope? For that matter, where's Wrath of Khan? Would've been nice to see The Longest Day, or A Bridge Too Far somewhere, too. All The President's Men, maybe.

@Indeed999 I'm a huge fan of LOTR... but while the movies were great technical achievements... they don't even belong on this list. The acting alone is marginal.
@bilbob7624 Nice to meet another LOTR fan. I love the books, and I'm obsessed with the films. I just love them so much, so I have to disagree with you. They are a cinematic masterpiece.
I like alot that you have listed. I don't particularly care for the order and so many omissions and the inclusion of a lot of nerdy tripe makes me think you live in your moms basement.
i think reservoir dogs should be higher than it it is, the idea of non linear story telling and films based around character rather than massive explosions or pointless love scenes are far greater due to their simpicity, plus it contains some of the greatest acting ive ever seen, usually great acting is judged by how load actors can shout NOOOO or how many tears they can shed but this film contains subtle and beutiful acting and is usually voted down due to one violent scene, which is a shame
Thumbs up. This list is good. I'm not a big fan of old movies, but I do love Kurosawa movies, especially Seven Samurai. And how about Jim Jarmusch movies? Down by Law is a great movie.
@mk25121994 Fight Club is overrated. A film about alienated narcissists. :P Maybe MrRoekkum hasn't got around to seeing "Goodfellas" yet, or maybe he just didn't like it? It happens. :) Remember, this is his subjective list.
@mk25121994 for fucks sake! every video likle this is full of the same comments: "Where the fuck's (insert generi good movie)???"
if you were looking for a good movie, would you really want to see a list of movies youve already seen several times. when im looking for a good movie to watch, i dont want a video saying "fight club, goodfellas, exorcist, psycho, etc" because i know about them. get the fuck over it and accept someone ese might have different tastes
I was very surprised to see Citizen Kane so far from #1 considering your description.
The Deer Hunter is one of my favorites but it absolutely rips your heart out at the end. I can't believe Raging Bull wasn't on here either. The acting by De Niro is amazing among othere facets of the film. I don't think i saw any Scorsese movies on here but I'm not sure
I don't know if this will make you're list but I highly recommend you see George Huang's "Swimming With Sharks" the production value isn't the best but Kevin Spacey's and Frank Whaley's performance in them are amazing. It's definitely worth a rental at least.
every movies you had on there that ive seen i agree with except V for vendetta. i thought it was a good movie but i wouldnt put in on a list of greatest movies ever. i would have put donnie darko in its place but thats just me. otherwise great job 5 stars
I very much like your choices, but I will watch all the Japanese movies of the 50's and 60's (never seen any of them). Full metal Jacket 102 (???) behind V for Vendetta. I thought it was an ok movie personally. Lord of the Rings # 16 come on now. Deer Hunter was better I thought. "The Thing" shouldn't be on the list. A "B" type of movie I think, If you get a chance see "In the Mouth of Madness" with Sam Neil. I never get tired of watching 12 angry men. Good Job.

Better than most such lists; I agree with about 50% of the selections, and even the ones I wouldn't put in the top 120 (why 120, by the way, rather than 100? either is arbitrary, but it seems quirky...) are very good movies. You are the only other person I am aware of who knows about "Bicycle Thieves", which I saw only once, about40 years ago, and remember vividly. Why no Jacques Tati?
My personal opinion of course, but I hate Stalker. Tarkovski wouldn't give a shit about my opinion either, but still I wonder what people saw in it that they liked.
@thisistheyear9 You must be some kind of tool for considering those movies to be the best of all time... but i guess you're only joking because nobody would be that pathetic and simple-minded, right !?
You don't have a lot of movies that i'd have put in. However, i haven't seen the majority of these movies....you definitely nailed a bunch. Dr. Strangelove, Last of the Mohicans, Casablanca, the Godfather movies, Lord of the Rigns, Star Wars, THE 7TH SEAL ( i was wondering if you'd put that one in there)
I'd have put in Galaxy quest (geeky i know) but definitely Ammadeus, Ghandi, maybe K-Pax. I'd never have been able to do a list like this. No animated films...interesting.
Nice list, definitely inspired me to watch some films, especially the foreign ones. I do have to say though, I love how many Kurosawa films are on here!
one recommendation im making to everyone who loves film is a new greek film called dogtooth, not for the faint of heart (at all!!) but it is truly truly exceptional, a must see
Great choice of music. My only gripe, and I love to debate this; The Unforgiven is the greatest movie ever made. I've argued this point with friends, family and other movie buffs for 18 years now. I've had many concede to me, I've never conceded, and as you can imagine there have been countless draws. But, as I said, I love the debate and I'll give any film its chance in the ring. Great video, there were a handful on here I haven't seen, guess I'm logging on to NetFlix next.
Though I admit that I haven't seen 90% of the films on your list, they all seem very old (which doesn't necessarily mean bad) and lack the imaginative genius that's shown face in the past few years. There are a number of movies that I would have put on the list, but as you said in your description, it's your personal taste. So rather than change the list, I would change the title. I don't mean to sound hateful, it just doesn't seem to fit.
never saw a kubrick film you didn't like did you? you appreciate certain directors, actors and themes. to each his own. i have seen by my count 11 or 12 movies that are on your list. i saw all the movies you didn't see. to each his own. might i suggest raise the red lantern. and 8 women. the ones on your list i saw involved gregory peck and hitchcock, C.K, SSB, GASIG, and GWTW, A.H. blade runner is the only harrison ford movie i can stand. your video was very nicely done.
Indiana Jones, The Hunt for Red October, Dirty Harry, Die Hard I, Saving Private Ryan, Mad Max Beyond Thunder Dome, Terminator 1-3, all of my favorites
Great List, only a few sugestions, Amadeus, Mystic River, East of Eden, OldBoy, Amores Perros, The man who wasn't there, Casino etc... but the list is already quite good has it is.
@TheUnwrittenWriter I think Conan was awesome when i first saw it, Conan the destroyer was good too. def cheesy, terrible acting but defines badass warrior
@XxGrizZ Yeah but it really wasn't... I don't know, innovative. Horrible acting. Stereotypical roles, (helpless female falls madly in love with hero, who rejects her to pursue the just path --- gimme a break!). Badass warrior -- sure if you think obnoxious muscles exhibits strength.
@greg5566 The date is there to tell the evolution of my taste in films rather than the "time span" of the films represented. I'll soon upload an updated list, having seen about 3-400 old classics and works of art. ;--)
@MrRoekkum i agree with you, if we talk about cinema we must talk about john ford and kurosawa, but i prefer the second one, also i miss a little bit the searches, but there are for me the best ones....
Dude Disney movies are the best and there isn't one in here

Conan the Barbarian? Really? Nothing by the Coen brothers? Fargo's a damned fine movie.
Anything by Kubrick, even Eyes Wide Shut. Not to mention Lolita. Pretty risque for the time it was made.

Raging Bull is a glarring omission, and where are the animated films? Still great list overall, I'd probably give 80% of these a 10/10 or 9/10.

@mk25121994 Fight Club is overrated. A film about alienated narcissists. :P Maybe MrRoekkum hasn't got around to seeing "Goodfellas" yet, or maybe he just didn't like it? It happens. :) Remember, this is his subjective list.
TheGnolla 1 year ago
@mk25121994 for fucks sake! every video likle this is full of the same comments: "Where the fuck's (insert generi good movie)???"
if you were looking for a good movie, would you really want to see a list of movies youve already seen several times. when im looking for a good movie to watch, i dont want a video saying "fight club, goodfellas, exorcist, psycho, etc" because i know about them. get the fuck over it and accept someone ese might have different tastes

u should watch donnie darko if u havent yet, it wouldve made the list no problem
HoLuH 1 year ago
I was very surprised to see Citizen Kane so far from #1 considering your description.
The Deer Hunter is one of my favorites but it absolutely rips your heart out at the end. I can't believe Raging Bull wasn't on here either. The acting by De Niro is amazing among othere facets of the film. I don't think i saw any Scorsese movies on here but I'm not sure

Great list! "Come And See" at 20 is perfect, that film does not get the credit it deserves.
elfo19noob 1 year ago
I don't know if this will make you're list but I highly recommend you see George Huang's "Swimming With Sharks" the production value isn't the best but Kevin Spacey's and Frank Whaley's performance in them are amazing. It's definitely worth a rental at least.

Braveheart, The Patriot, Clash Of The Titans (1981), The Creature From The Black Lagoon, Robin Hood (1952 starring Richard Todd), Office Space..

Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" or rather "Shichinin no samurai" is simply perfect. Everything about this movie is just perfect...

Great job putting this together!....obviously something like this is so subjective it's almost impossible to create a definitive list....
Personally i would:
-put Raging Bull up in the top ten (arguably Deniro's and Scorsese's best)
-put Law. of Arabia in the top 2 if not 1
-and i'd move the shining into the top 4. in my mind it's Kubrick's purest / least topical film.
-put All the Pres. men in the top50 ( lots of films since have chased it)
-remove rainman and insert Avalon.

No animated films...interesting.

no forrest gump or jurassic park?? your list is terrible

@irishalien001 two very gimmicky, yet well done movies. definitely not worthy of this list.

How you can put The Deer Hunter just a few steps above Day of the Dead is beyond me. Guess you have it in for zombie flicks.

Great video, there were a handful on here I haven't seen, guess I'm logging on to NetFlix next.

here is a recommendation off the top of my head------ "13 Monkeys."
really well made sci-fi film.
thanman11 1 year ago

XxGrizZ 1 year ago
@XxGrizZ Yeah but it really wasn't... I don't know, innovative. Horrible acting. Stereotypical roles, (helpless female falls madly in love with hero, who rejects her to pursue the just path --- gimme a break!). Badass warrior -- sure if you think obnoxious muscles exhibits strength.

@greg5566 The date is there to tell the evolution of my taste in films rather than the "time span" of the films represented. I'll soon upload an updated list, having seen about 3-400 old classics and works of art. ;--)
