I heard him yesterday in Milan's Conservatorio (Music hall). Great performance, really no words....I heard him several times (playing Schumann and Beethoven as well) and everytime I'm astonished admiring his ability in the interpretation of the music pieces and his excellent skills
musical taste is subjective, and thus so are the performances, and although the scores contain nuances that will serve as reference, finally, the personality of the interpreter is the one seen and heard at that time. I like this variation Shiff. as it looks. although it is incredible that Gould.
Christopher Parkening does the same stupid thing, though in his younger years he did not which leads me to conclude that it is little more than a perverse affectation acquired in his dotage and probably inspired by the likes of Gould. Shut up! It spoils what would otherwise be very nearly perfect playing.
And finally there is the issue of the recording quality which DOES play a not insubstantial role. If Gould could have recorded with the same steadily increasing quality that Perahia and Schiff have been able to, the subtleties in his interpretations might be more apparent. What I cannot abide with Gould or any other similar musician is that truly crappy humming along. Bach did NOT compose a silly part for voice to accompany these compositions, and it should NOT be there. Shut the hell up!
@acbulgin2 hey...the sound quality is more than adaquate for gould-especially in the 2nd version. personally,i don`t mind the humming because he`s not emoting or self congratulatory like the extraneous sounds which Keith Jarrett makes.
as for Schiff-he`s a great player but personally i find him a bit precious in his way...we should be thankful there are so many different approaches.
@tallswede68 actually, you do compare those fruits. it is a fact that gould is more genius, but gould is more genius than the most piano interprets ever lived. but Schiff is playing the variations in a very different style, he has an point of view to them. i like schiffs play in some aspects more than goulds (for example the part schiff accentuates more than gould, at 0:08). if there was one "right" way to play it, there would not be that huge amount of different interprets.
There are different interpretations because they want to sell cds. And what Gould performance are you comparing? He played the Goldberg variations several times, and they sound different. But each of them is better than Schiff.
@tallswede68 With respect to all present, I humbly suggest that there is a marked tendency among connoisseurs of classical music to regard the first truly great recording or performance of a work they heard as setting a standard against which all later performances and recordings of the same work are judged. It is largely unconscious I think and completely understandable. Both Gould and Schiff are world class pianists. There are no objective criteria to settle the issue as to who is better.
played so good.....

Amilyen jól játszik, olyan aljas saját hazájával szemben. Szégyelje magát és ne tegye be a lábát többé Magyarországra.... Pfuj!

@tallswede68 You don't compare Lamorghini with mercedes, do you. Both excellent cars.

@CiCaesar
We are not comparing apples and oranges here. They're both piano players, and Gould is better.
