around his waist, through the muntered carabiner, and follow through the eight for a bend loop. Then cut through the harness or belt that is holding the belay device to Simon and let out the remaining rope through the muntered carabiner that is tied to him. After that, if Joe's weight is still on the rope after letting him down another 140 feet and 90 minutes or so has passed, then Simon would still have to cut the rope.
I admire Joe and Simon for persevering through extreme
I'm new to climbing, so maybe the experts out there can tell me if this would work:
After about 15 minutes has past, and Joe's weight is still on the rope, Simon might let the rope out until the knot is all the way up to the belay device. With both hands free, get a spare carabiner and take the loose rope above the knot and get a munter, or maybe a double munter, onto the spare carabiner. Then Simon might get the end of the loose rope and tie an eight about 5 feet from the end, go
@TheXTC2000: first off, what does "except I'm in year 6" mean? As opposed to year 5? Or 7? And did your teacher turn the volume down during those last parts of him screaming fuck?
simon could've put a prussik around the rope below the belay device, then unclipped the belay device. the weight would then be on the lower rope and he could freely untie the knot retie on the other side of the belay device, loosen the prussik and then conintue lowering the next 80 feet. I understand it might not be possible under the circumstances
@GTACIP notice how i said "I understand it might not be possible under the circumstances." the frozen hands thing is what i was getting at. anyway he was able to untie and retie the double fishermans knot in the ropes so why not a prussik, that's much easier to tie. It seemed to me they didn't think of it.
You can watch this film and say "he should of done this or that", --but you never know what you would do unless your in this type of situation. INTENSE!
What an amazing story and film! Much respect to the survivors and film makers.

cold, extreme dehydration, hunger, and darkness.
I want to progress beyond climbing on manmade structures, but this movie has really got me rattled.

@8spencermoser8 You don't have to go to extremes like this to climb on non-man made structures. These guys wanted to be top of the game.

Love simons honesty where he simply says that cutting the rope was a quick decision to make.

I watched this with my mum on DVD and she kept saying "what a brave lad..." and shaking her head every few minutes.

"FUCK!!! YOU'RE A FUCKING CUNT!!! CUUUUUUNT!!!"
Oh, I can't thank you enough for not censoring this PBS/BBC...a censor really would kinda violently jarr the audience outta the film. Good job, PBS!

Man, why can't the Discovery Channel have such a...realistic vocabulary?? ROFL!
But no, seriously, though. Kinda enhances the realism of the thing, you know? You know nothing's censored.
