no you just enable widgets in beryl and then you set the action for it, he used a mouse action for the corner of the screen. and with screenlets you can set what object is a widget or not, as soon as you set it as a widget it disappears and only shows when you activate the widget layer.. wont work unless enabled in beryl or compiz-fusion

No, I just mapped that corner to the widget plugin for beryl.
