Actually, unlike what the other guy said, Crona's gender is altogether unknown. In Japanese, when people use first person pronouns, it's gender specific, unlike in English where "I" and "Me" are the only first person pronouns and are not gender specific. Crona says "boku" in Japanese, which makes it sound like she's a boy, but this can be used by females as well. For the most part, the anime will call Crona "he" but the gender is still ambiguous.

I think that Crona is a girl- after all, in this series, witches are only females, and one of the main witch families that's spoken of is the mouse family, which consist of entirely identical witches. I think that witches, when bearing children, can only bear females. However, Medusa has been known to experiment on Crona. Its ambiguous gender may be a side effect of said experimentation.

Maybe Crona was "supposed" to be female, but Medusa found a way to have a male child.
