This piece - there aren't the words to describe it. Whether great sorrow or great joy, this piece expresses it perfectly.
If I could pick just one piece from the entire history of music - if I was unable to listen to no other - this would be it. Touches the soul. and heals it
@vbbain The CD this recording is taken from is called 'The Classic Experience' and was released under the EMI Classical label in 1988. If you're attempting to buy the CD you should be aware that there are multiple follow ups to the CD called 'The Classic Experience II' and 'The Classic Experience III' so do be careful in selecting the correct CD. The track also appeared on 'The Very Best of The Classic Experience' which pooled tracks from all three outings.
@vbbain It's also possible that it appeared on other albums by St. Martins-in-the-fields, although I couldn't say for sure. Their website can probably help you there.
I have to agree that this rendition is truly the best rendition for this Baroque Era piece. I have owned 14 different renditions from a lot of famous conductors around the world, but none seemed to capture this piece's era as well as Sir Neville Mariner's. I often read criticisms about how his renditions of any piece seem to lack power, but this particular rendition of Pachelbel's Canon shows that sometime it doesn't take power and majesty to capture the Baroque era spirit!
I heard this adorable piece of music in 1995 and I must agree with the uploader: I have heard different versions of Pachelbel's Canon but this interpretaion of the St. Martins-in-the-Fields with Sir Neville Mariner is THE BEST!
first time i heard pachelbel's canon, it was conducted by neville marriner on some classical compilation. Then I lost the CD and have been looking for this version ever since, cuz it really is the best version I have ever heard.
Sir Neville Marriner's orchestration of Canon is simply the best there is. It's my favourite indeed of all the variations I've listened to and I treasure a CD I bought of this about 15 years ago now. Thanks.
I've heard about a hundred different versions of this piece... but this one, by Mariner and St Martin-in-the-fields is my absolute favourite! Sheer bliss. Thank you!

The Neville Mariner / St Martin in the Fields version is the greatest recording of the Canon ever made.
This is not an opinion. It is a fact.
Case closed.

@darkfey1963 I've never seen that but the music makes me think of Arthur C Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama, including the sequels.

For some reason St Martin has the ability to bring out the pure emotion of a piece. They are grand! Love thier Vaughn Williams works!
