Horse slaughter keeps the market full of healthy, younger horses, and makes use of the horses that are killed. For many of the horses that pass through slaughter, they are on their last legs, and would have faced the even more horrible death of starvation and/or neglect. The methods of slaughter in the US were humane, but when too many people protested it resulted in horses being shipped longer distances where less human methods are used in Mexico. Bravo.

as a man who slaughters horses I have this to say, there is nothing wrong with running a slaughter house, everyday I slaughter horses, cows,chickens, turkeys, pigs, and lambs, it is the best way I know how to support my family and I get free meat because I slaughter my animals for my own food as well

What can be done? One thing you can do is support your local horse rescue with gifts, money, your time or raising awareness. Another thing you can do is instead of buying your next horse from a breeder (part of the problem) buy your next horse from a horse rescue. You can also offer a rescue horse a temporary home.

You can find rescues near you by searching '(your state) horse rescue'

Its just meat. And while you make a potentially good point, you fail to explain why they end up here. The majority of these horses end up being slaughtered because they become lame and need to be put down. If a horse damages a leg- it is finished. It cannot recover!

This is actually a rather humane ending for them. And the majority of meet you get in the store has a similar end.  What is worse? You not having the guts to do it yourself, or the likes and then bitching about it?

Also, just FYI, horse are one of the most destructive animals on 4 limbs in the wild. And with little to no natural predators, they reproduce and run feral, untill their numbers outweigh the food that the land is able to supply them. Horse culling keeps the numbers and destruction down, thus ensuring a better quality of life for the rest of the population.

It's not the slaughter houses that you need to be spotlighting here. It's the irresponsible owners who let their horses get into such poor condition, the slaughter house is doing the horses a favour by ending their lives of torture. You can try to rescue them all, but it won't happen in the real world. People need to own and breed horses repsonsibly, that's where the problem lays.

A horse with a broken leg has no quality of life. What they put Barbaro through was worse than putting him down, which they ended up doing anyway, except he had to go down a long painful path before that. And not retired race horses are slaughtered. Most will find good loving homes in another discipline, usually jumping, hacking and dressage etc. I'm pro slaughter, but not abuse. You need to stop abuse, not slaughter.

Last year (2008) they shut down all the horse slaughter houses in the U.S. But there are still some in Canada and Mexico.

To tell you the truth, there will always be horses. And also, most of the time slaughter houses take the horses that are actually no good. Yes, I know they do take the good ones too, but theres still plenty of horses out there. Theres nothing we can do to stop them in Mexico and Canada, but good video.

Yes there is. And the reason they end up like that is because of people. Probably well meaning people, who mean good things, but have no experience in the situation and ultimately ruin a good horse. There aren't enough people in this world to turn around every mistreated horse, many have become dangerous, the answer is to destroy them. Feed a dog, feed someone in an overseas restaurant, feed the lions at the zoo...more useful dead than alive. Be realistic about it.
