@Felldeeen91 I thought VC (Viet Cong) was Victor Charlie in the military communications (they've got a whole alphabetical system of words to avoid people mishearing messages) and then naturally it was shortened to Charlie. Hope that's semi-accurate and helpful. Check my channel if you like good raw blues, btw...
@Felldeeen91 The U.S. military has the tradition of naming all of America's enemies by names that are stereotypically common to that country or names that are based on other stereotypes. It's actually pretty funny and creative. Examples include Fritz or Kraut for Germans, Ivan for Russians, Haji or Ali Baba for Muslim insurgents, and Charlie for the North Vietnamese.
Charlie comes from the term, "Victor Charlie" which is VC, or Viet Cong, what they called the Vietnamese soldiers that were fighting. So Victor Charlie got shortened to Charlie, so when they say, Charlie this and Charlie that, they mean the VC's.
"Lance, I want my board back. I won't harm or punish you. I just want the board back. It was a good board, I really liked it, and you know how hard it is to find a board you like..."
I just watched this a day ago, and when I heard this, I was like "wait, this was in Call of Duty!" Good to know that Infinity Ward pay respect to these good movies (there's also the Dr. Strangelove reference).
@vogliounacocacola Actually 'Charlie' was short for the term 'Victor Charles'. Victor Charles was military phonetic for VC, meaning Viet Cong. Thought I should just clear that up a little bit. But I like your reasoning for a phonetic Communist!
"TANGO is derived from the phonetic alphabet, with Tango being the phonetic equivalent of T. TARGET was shortened to T and then subsequently Tango. Therefore when someone says "Tango down" they are stating target down"
@Generation1Terrorist Well, the thing is that in written form, "target" will still be shortened down to "T", but in verbal use, it is still referred to as "TANGO" ease communication.
full metal jacket with the surfin bird scene and the speech mother green and thos killing machines, charlie dont surf and i love napalm smell by the morning of apocalypse now and finnaly a big HEEEEEEERES JOHNNY by the shining
Indeed. But the funny thing is that he was based on a real person: Lt. Col. "Mad Jack" Churchill. Read a bit about him, the guy was a real character, even nuttier than Kilgore.
call of duty has so many apocalypse now references, as a lot of video games do, since its a great movie that has influenced american culture in many ways
first came this then the clash song cuz the clash loved the movie then cod4 and idk why cod4 named it that cuz your not fighting charlie on the game so WTF
not exactly, Charlie Chan was one of the many names givien to the VC or NVA, Charlie is not a universial term, Tango or Enemy is a more common term... as for the video game that you talk about im not sure im just saying that Charlie is in no way a term for any enemy on the field, mostly just VC or NVA along with Dinks, Clit clats, gooks and Chang those were common names for them

Charlie comes from Victor Charlie, and that comes from VC, and that comes from Viet Cong.
In WW2 it was Jerry/kraut etc, in Vietnam it was Charlie, and now its Tango I think. Not sure where thats from though.
But Charlie is a Vietnam thing.
0906peter 2 years ago
I think Tango is from Target or Terrorist.
Bucketheadhead 2 years ago
Germans were called Jerry, English soldiers were called Tommy during WW2.
During the Vietnam war, the Vietcong was called Charly.
IkNeemJeMee 2 years ago
Mostly the English called the Germans Jerry.
The Americans used kraut mostly.
