  • That's Grand Funk, prof Mark was what brought these guys to fame. Truly awesome.

  • Unbelievable!

  • Both of you should stop bitching at each other and just enjoy the vibe. Both bands were impressive, but we know that Abba was really the better of all three! LOL er...just yankin' your collective chains! We played both albums in the basement and to this day, they were remarkable in every way! Thanks for posting this video!

  • @chazsinger Your right both are great but, when I want to hear in your face a loud unforgiving rock band it will always be these guy's.

  • OMG! WHAT A GROUP!!!! BRING THEM BACK.

  • i think youtube should be banned from shoeing concert footage of any tipe because you watch it without it stoping to load every 5 seconds

  • i stand corrected.its a medley of both.......shoulda listened it out first..my bad

  • this is flight of the phoenix.not footstompin' music..........let it go

  • Man, that's some real rock 'n' roll. I love the bass sound.

  • By any chance, someone has recorded the Grand Funk live Album (the black and white) the song "In need"? That version is AMAZING!!!

  • A GFR album was the first album I ever bought. I lived in SE FL in the late sixties and one time a friend came to visit after a James Taylor / Carol King concert. He said as James stepped on stage the crowd roared for so long James finally said "Christ man, I ain't Grand Funk" and finally began his show. Does that not say something about this fabulous band?!?!?!

  • Simply no way you can perform like this without being talented and confident in the extreme

  • Just smokin'! Dang!

  • best part 04:09 to 04:20 listen that combination of voice and awesome guitar sound.

  • #1 Rock band in the 70's hand down

  • 14 fans de gaybeiber

  • Still the best vid on You Tube. You got a great channel here, Packed.

But how many times did I tell you that? Grand Funk forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 14 ppl must enjoy pubescence jibberish along with drum machines

  • Awesome sound! I've always loved GFR's immediacy and their simple, rough patterns. the very essence of rock is made out of this. Also, there's always been a bluesy element underneath their music. Thank you so much for posting!! P.S. You should have specified in your title that there's "Footstompin' music" too . Great song as welll)))

  • A Garage Band,who were Fuck'in Awesome,I'm Speechless.............. God Bless America!!

  • Don Brewer sucks... go ahead a sue me for deformation of character... until you make things right with Mark Farner the world will hate you. we see threw your bullshit Recording artist JESSE NASHVILLE JAMES

  • Don Brewer is a monster drummer.

  • This guys are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and that has to be one of the greatest injustices in the history of modern music. I remembered in the early 70s it was Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath and Grand Funk as the bands to follow. GFR also had a huge political impact with a message against the establishment. Perhaps that is the reason why media decided to "erase" their memory. Well, no way.

  • this is not prejudiced but American Bands just seem to have a little more rock to their roll

  • wow

  • Shit!

  • Wow, this is awesome and to think that I was even there that night makes it even doubly awesome!!! One of the best live bands I've ever seen, just pure Rock & Roll energy which is the way it's supposed to be!

  • @theachtungtree I dont know too many " JOKES " that have 10 consecutive platinum albums or hold sales records for almost every place they have ever played.

  • @47tooter green day sold shitload last time i knew...and they're still a joke to me no matter what....even if they have sold 10 millions or whatever shit with their bullcrap i still dont care, it has SHIT to to with being respected, then go listen to linkin park, they have sold tons too, go kid

  • @theachtungtree You know , Grand funk is great to party to ..Their concerts are more entertaining than anybody you mentioned .. They put on a great show and yes did blow zepplin away.

  • I love this band !!

  • It would be a crime against humanity if this footage had been lost. This is one of the things that makes YT worth it all. God bless and thank you.

  • Uh, R & R hall of Fame? Are you people blind, deaf, and dumb? If not, then you are the most sorry group of imbeciles ever created to be in charge of nominations of bands or people to be inducted.

Look at this video. Only a moron of the lowest intelligence level could not absolutely love the high impact energy of GFR. I'd be ashamed to have anyone know I was on the committee with their continued ignorance showing year after year for failing to nominate worthy bands such as GFR. What a shame!!

  • nobody underestimated

  • some raw energy there man. Great singing and playing, great band

  • Does Don Brewer not have the baddest Afro ever? Especially for a white boy! ha ha these guys had soul fo sho! GFR for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!

  • Alice Cooper was just nominated...maybe we're getting closer.Problem is they should have been inducted long ago.......

  • GOD DAMN IT WHO ARE THOSE 14 PERSONS WHO DISLIKE THIS DAMN I WANNNA KILL THEM >.<

  • @XAsexsinoX ..probably Sabbath people...I've pissed a few of them off over the years.

  • @XAsexsinoX probably some Serbs:)

  • yep, they pretty much kick ass like no one else could. amazing.

  • Many GFRxR concerts ended in riots with cop cars turned upside down.

People forget just how big this band was in the early seventies.

The fact is, no band was ever bigger than GFRxR was from '70-'72.

Check out my 5 part "History" of Grand Runk Railroad for the amazing story of America's Band.

When your 3 faces are plastered 120 feet tall at Times Square in New York, you know you have arrived!

  • @PackedFunk Is the film called "Flight of the Phoenix? Cuz the song is "Footstompin' Music". Just curious.

  • @beatlesarebest The intro song is flight of the phoenix , From their seventh album.

  • @beatlesarebest I see. Thanks! :-) I love these guys!!! Gonna have to check out the Phoenix!!! :-)

  • @beatlesarebest

The first song is an instumental called "Flight Of The Phoenix."

The second song is "Footstompin' Music."

  • @PackedFunk That's funny....film called "Flight of the Phoenix"? ohh boy....young people what can ya say!

  • @PackedFunk

Hey, these days cop cars need to be upside down;)

  • @PackedFunk sorry, but I love GFRR too, but saying they were bigger than Led Zeppelin in the 70's... They were fucking good, there was that case that the fans prefered their show than Zeppelin's, but they were never bigger or better than Zeppelin, it's just ignorance.

  • @mmofc100

GFRxR was the biggast band in the world in both tickets sales & album sales in the early seventies. GFRxR was the first American band to earn 10 consecutive platinum albums, not Zep.

  • @PackedFunk Obviously, Zeppelin is british. Zeppelin sold about 300 million albuns... It's known all around the world, GFRxR is very good, an excelent band, but stop being so fanatic, it's not bigger, and far away it's not better than Zeppelin. It's not about oppinion, it's about LOGIC.

  • @PackedFunk ..and if GFRR had not had the astonishing setback of the McKnight legal ripoff, GFRR would have had that money to reinvest into further refinement and expansion of their raw talent.

  • The Magic That Was Mark Farner & GFRxR!

This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

People are still in awe of this great but misunderstood American Band

  • @PackedFunk You are so, so right my friend :)

  • railroad was so great til american band album garbage ,

but pre then good as anyone . farner was a superstar that

did it all . i lived on markdonmel/grandfunklive albums for

years . then phoenix was different but good . then americanband = the end ,

destroyed no doubt by some lame record company control

  • the whole flight of the phoenix albulm rocks if you can find it

  • the most underrated voice in rock and roll..You notice when they mention bands of rock and roll..they never mention grand funk..its a travesty

  • @majortom1953

Check out my 'Grand Funk Railroad - Hard Rock/Heavy Metal"

    video posted here on YouTube.

    It gives credit to GFRxR.

  • turn it up !!!

  • Mel Schacher was the epitome of what a rock bass player should be: Loud, powerful, rumbling, moving grooves. Fantastic!

  • that is a hellofa drummer

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone has the hammond's drawbar settings for this song??

  • What happened to every body..

  • @WALNUTS52 ???? What everybody do you mean?

  • @Bekki54 Don't hear from anyone and i'm feelin' sorry for myself. Rolling Stone mags top 500 songs of all time and no I'M YOUR CAPTAIN. They certainly have it out for our band..Hope you and Mom are fine...One hot as hell summer here in the east.

  • Mark Farner is so talented, guitar, drums, harmonica, writing, singing & such stage presence. Without him there is no Funk!

  • I have never in my life witnessed such a band with this much passion about a performance.

Listen to them sceaming & crying out at each other to fire each other up to a level beyond belief. Madison Square Garden got the roof blown off that night near Christmas in '72.

    Where is the passion today?

  • @HD80EVO Man do I ever agree with you. This was music at it's very best!!

  • @HD80EVO As with most everything today, the Passion ,is eclipsed by the love of Money.

  • I rember this Don Kirshner concert which aired in early 1973.Is there anyway to see this entire concert or to get a DVD? maybe someone knows and can write to me.

  • Comment removed

  • Magic that was Farner & The Boys in early seventies.

No wonder no band wanted to follow them.

Can you imagine trying to take stage after a performance such as this????

  • The Rock and Roll Hall of fame will NEVER have any credibilty to me until these guys are in!

  • They all have awesome energy on stage. I get tired just watching Don thrashing his drums

  • That is as fantastic as ever !!!!!!!!

  • @keymankeys1960

This one & the "Into The Sun" above in video response are my favorites.

Grand Funk Railroad was indeed a "Performance Vehicle."

  • @PackedFunk

Yea, by this time in late '72, GFRxR had been the number one band in the world in album & ticket sales.

And the most unusual thing about this is it happened without radio airplay.

It was their incredible live shows that made them famous.

Grand Funk Railroad was a "PERFORMANCE VEHICLE!!!"

Their concerts were major events, not merely shows.

Some of the ticket sales records they set were never broken. (Shea Stadium July 1971)

  • (uploader) The New York Daily News' Nationwide Readers' Poll for 1971. Tens of thousands of votes were cast from every state in the nation. Whe the final score was tallied, Grand Funk Railroad had garnered a whopping 75% of the total vote as "Best Rock Group In The U.S." Left to split up the remaining 25% were: 2. Creedence Clearwater, 3. Jackson Five, 4. Led Zeppelin, 5. Three Dog Night, 6. The Who, 7. Sly, 8. Santana, 9.Chicago, and 10.Ten Years After!
  • I've always thought it was real decent Of Mark & The Boys to leave 25% for the rest of the bands to fight over. Ha!

The fact remains that GFRxR dominated the early seventies, PERIOD!

No band wanted to follow them, no band could follow them.

If they tried, they suffered the consequenses like Led Zeppelin did.

(My 5 part "History" posted here shows this in detail.)

  • selling GFR Live in Tokyo 1974 dvd. message me if interested.

  • I grew up listening to this, & the other greats of that era. I was in Michigan, when GFR did the Michigan circuit ('96? '97?), & tickets sold out within a couple of hours. I...was...pissed!! LOL

This piece of tape, here, is exactly why Don Kirshner's show was better than Midnight Special (no offense to them, but I'm looking at only one example, as proof).

  • Rock Hall Of Garbage is becoming more and more a joke..ABBA?

  • For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

    is true!!!

  • Hell yeah. One of Michigan's finest!

  • I still get chills whenever I watch this! This brings back some very good memories for this ole' gal! Takes me way on back to some better times. The early 70's and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!

  • I'll never forget getting my " Weekly Reader" magazine from school 1970. And they had this issue that was all about "grand Funk railroad" I was only 11 at the time. I thought they were just being hyped up. Plus they didn't play them on the radio in 1970. But a good friend played their albums for me at his house about a year or so later. And I finally heard what I was missing. I've been a fan ever since. I have a Epluribus Funk album signed by Mark Don And Mel. In mint condish. as remarked by Don

  • @TOPOFFMAN

I remember those Weekly Reader magazines. What a cool memory.

That "EPluibus Funk" album is the hardest to find in mint condition of all the GFRxR albums. Having a signed one is pryceless.

  • I recently donated my entire collection of sealed GFR albums, 45s with picture sleeves, and a framed press release from this MSG concert to Mark and Lesia. So one day at work, the phone rings, and it was Mark. We chatted about the music business, and he went to my band's website, we laughed about my 1972 Microfrets Signature similar to this one, that I play in most of my local shows. He thanked me for donating my stuff to him, as apparently most of his vast memorabilia was stolen.

  • @ranran19701 Great story, lucky you.

  • @ranran19701

Very cool. Mark is a fine person, & you are too.

Good things happen to good people.

  • Takes a great deal of talent and practice to play loud, flawlessly, with relaxed aplomb, and still jump around like this....By this time Mark was a 10th grade droput millionaire, not even more than 23, and the King of the Rockpile. Just at the very end he slips and almost falls as he approaches the mic.......Madison Square Garden indeed!

  • nice break into "Footstompin Music" at 2:45! --

    Another great Mark Farner song......

  • The fact remains that no band dared to or could follow GFRxR in their heyday.

Remember what happened to Zeppelin in '69?

Can you imagine trying to take the stage after this????

  • This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

  • @PackedFunk RIGHT ON, PACKEDFUNK. NOTHING CAN REPLACE THIS KIND OF MUSIC.

  • I guess these guys can rock the house!!! I haven't seen this much energy in any of today's bands yet.

  • i have GFR live in tokyo 1974 on dvd if anyone wants to buy it message me : )

  • i once was in the mode of thinking give the band their credit which was long over due and enshrine them in the rock and roll hall of fame...now I say...this group..to include craig frost have more human beings..you and i included..than the entire enshriment could gather ever..so i guess they already are there....thanks not for the memories.there are a great many...thanks for now cause I am still funkin son....sir t

  • It astounds me how Donnie can so enthusiastically work his magic on those drums and still be able to sing. Plus he is such a fashion statement! I love his style. These three are just AMAZING.

  • Why doesn't Grand Funk gather up all of this rare performance video and clean it up,including the sound. And put it together on DVD ? What a waste to have all of this great video and not make a project out of it.

  • because they hate each other's guts...........

  • This great video reminds me of how GFRxR concerts were an event, not merely a show.

110% energy for hours on end.

Their live shows alone should have gotten them inducted on first ballot.

When a band is so in to the show themselves, the audience can't help but get into it also.

Grand Funk Railroad concerts were fun & exciting. Hard to explain, but this video shows what I mean.

  • Hey T.J.,Good to hear from you.Hope your back is better as I'm still doing P.T. twice a week. I think some pain we just have to live with. Hope everything is well with you....Bill

  • Good to hear from you Bill. My back is better now. It stabilized finally.

Being a big Buddy Holly fan, I must recognized his death 51 years ago tonight. The day the music died Feb. 3, 1959.

I got a private tour of Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, N.M. last August. I got to hold the mic in my hands that Buddy recorded Peggy Sue with. Also got one of his guitar picks from Travis Holly, his brother. One of the coolest events of my life for sure. T.J.

  • Imagine being in high school and having Holly as a classmate?Damn... Beleave me when I tell you I was seven and can remember it..My older brother was very upset...

  • Crazy how close Mark came to falling at the end...

  • In his autobio "From Grand Funk To Grace" he talks about falling off a stage 15 feet tall if I remember correctly. Did not get hurt, but had a hard time getting back up top. Almost happened here.

  • In memory of the late Fattdaddy, cuz he really dug this song, too. R I P Fattdaddy.

    This is the greatest vid!!!!

  • Dig that sister...

  • RIP my friend. This channel really misses you. I'm sure your still watching.

  • @PackedFunk Second that..

  • @Bekki54 Hey sister...think your watching this a little too much...ROCK ON!!!

  • I watched this one again before I go off to bed. I love this video!! Man they were something!! huh??

    Music at it's best!

  • This is what many people think Rock & Roll is all about. GFRxR was simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. For all us who remember, nothing can replace it.

  • There is a link to the petition for Grand Funk above. everyone please sign it. It only takes a minute.

  • GFRR is one of my all time favorites. They have that soul, that spirit and that honesty lacking in todays "rock". I was watching a rock doc years ago about a concert that GFRR backed up Led Zeppelin. It was said that GFRR blew them off the stage. I believe it. Would you know which concert that was??

  • Hi Jimmy, I'm T.J. & it is good to meet you.

It was Detroit 1969. Check out my 5 part "History" of GFRxR. It tells all about it & I think you'll enjoy the History of this gret American band.

  • i have G.F.R full show in Tokyo 1974 on dvd if an one is interested, message me : )

  • During my High School years, everyone talked about GFR and their music was played at all of the parties. Why they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me. Three guys pumping out pure Rock, you just don't get music like this anymore.

  • Right bigjab! THIS is music!

  • I guess my 2 favorite bands of all time would be GFR and CCR. Both have a special kind of feel that makes you move.

  • The Power, Excitement, Energy, & Talent that was GFRxR!!!!

GFRxR set "The Standard" at which other live acts are still judged today.

This Is How It Is Done Youngsters!

  • Oh!!! This is Jon Lord !!! Oh!!! This is Deep Purple !!! hahahah hahaha this is awesome !!! extraordinarie piece.

  • forget the hall of fame my bad...crank this mother of slowly and then hammer it up at the two minute mark.....thats rock and roll folks...i dont care about the inner fighting of this group or the inner fighting of me and my damn girfriend ..this is rock and roll...remember what i said..the two minute mark..............

  • Grand Funk Railroad is what I consider the epitome of what Rock and Roll is supposed to be -- a three piece garage band that went on to be the most popular group in the world. They were simple and they were crude and they rocked with a vengeance without pretense or apology. Their live show was 100% energy. It was raw and it was real. They were the only band except for the Beatles to sell out Shea Stadium.

They sold out Shea in 72 hours, it took The Beatles 7 weeks. GFRxR set The Standard.

  • PackedFunk: Being a Flint musician - I too am proud of these guys, but to put it 'it took The Beatles 7 weeks to equal what GFR did in 72 hour is not a fair statement. When The Beatles were booked at Shea in 1965 - it was the first time something of that magnitude had been done and promoted...I'm sure they learned how to do it more efficiently in the next 6 years, when GFR got booked there, as Terry Knight had connections with Capitol Records-they knew how to promote sales quicker by then.

  • @pianorman , I loved the Beatles. My belief is back then the organizers were more prepared for such magnitude, because when something is being done with such anticipation, you prepare yourself with excitement, especially for the first time. As for me, I really respect the Beatles music, however, If I had a choice of going to see a live show from the Beatles or GFR. I want the RAW energy that GFR provided. Thank you.

  • Grand Funk could NEVER be contained "in" the RRHOF, their music far transcends any stuff old hall. They will always be flyin' free "out there" somewhere, above and beyond anybody that would have to be voted in by a bunch of tight-ass snooty people. Rock on forever GFR!!!

  • i have GFR live in tokyo japan 1974 dvd for sale. message me if interested.

  • Somebody on Youtube should make a competition like "Grand Funk Railroad vs Kiss", "Grand Funk Railroad vs Led Zeppelin" or "Grand Funk Railroad vs Black Sabbath". Maybe Queen and Pink Floyd could enter in the game too.

  • RIP FUNKDADDY....carry on in peace in the land of funk..we'll miss your quips and comments always...your funk brother

  • There is something going on that transcends the music..GFR should have been inducted decades ago.Makes no sense when you think of some of the acts that have made it.I've written also, but the fact remains that it would be a blow to Jann Wenners ego..Rolling Stone never gave GFR a good review back in the day.Black Sabbath's drug induced behavior was ok?

  • Frankly, the Rock and Roll HOF will not be needed to validate the great career of GFR. These guys were above and beyond most as musicians and entertainers, they brought "it" night in and night out.

  • Merry Christmas All You Funk Fans! Have A Safe & Happy New Year!

  • this particular groove right here is the eptiome of the soul of a rock generation like no other. This generation ALLOWED its voice GFR to be belittled in the press yet it was a screaming voice of the opionion of the people . Long live the railroad..their legacy is TO ME is power to the people...dont ever let them control you..GFR IS IN MY HALL OF FAME..u2

  • Everyone sign the damn petition & lets get Grand Funk Railroad the respect that is due!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuckin' Phil Collins over Mark Farner??? Are you kidding me???????????

    FUCK THIS!!!

Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone has crossed the line.

  • I went to my Facebook giving the petition to 20 of my friends. Hope they will sign it. I think Facebook is a good way to make sign this petition a bit faster than now. Go to "Grand Funk Induction Petition Drive" and invite.

  • I wrote to the Chairman. GFR will never be in the RRHOF. Take my word.

  • We should start a facebook page for GFR...BUT....maybe we care more than they do..

  • The weirdest thing is that I didn't even care of Grand Funk Railroad for a long time until now. Even at their reunion in 1996-1997, I was like: there is better rock music today than this old glam rock band that nobody in my age will care about. I was 16 years old in 1997 and I was saying to myself: well, it will be hard to pass that stuff on the school radio while everybody listens to Mase, Puff Daddy and Jay-Z lol. I used to listen to Rage against the machine, Radiohead, Everclear etc...

  • No....the Beastie Boys convinced me. GFR is too good to be in the RRHOF.

  • If Mark, Mel and Don could make it to Peru, they would sell out every fricking night. Guaranteed. They probably don't know it , but they made serious history down here. GFR will rock on 4ever.

    Greetings from PERU

  • How could the critics say they sucked? Must have been spoiled by all the good music at the time. This is amazing - can anybody perform like this anymore?

  • Now THIS is music, everyone! Raw energy. One of the best times in my young life, was seeing these guys in Chicago, 1971! Oh, those memories!

  • Hell Yeah ! My first album was Mark, Don & Mel. I have them all ..

  • Hall Of Ineptitude...

  • The Huffington Post just wrote an article about Grand Funk being blackballed by The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Go to their site & search:

How lame is The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?

  • Don't you get tired of listening to Bono & Sprinsteen telling each other how great the other one is every year?

    Bahahahaha..... that's really funny!!

  • I vastly prefer their earlier "downer" songs to the uptempo, "happy" and more commercial offerings. GFR and 3 Dog Night really disappointed me that way. BUT...

This does capture them cookin' and kickin'. Man, they were a BAND, and this shows it well. 3 guys putting out incredible sound (+ extra keyboardist here). This is kickass. This is rock and roll. The kind they don't make anymore.

  • this is rock and roll...rock and roll hall of fame it politics..i vote for THE FUNK...OF ...ROLL

  • Indeed...

  • GFRxR was indeed a "Performance Vehicle."

  • High energy !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grand Funk is always great!

  • I was sitting in front of the television watching this when it was originally broadcast ... It sounds even better now than it did then.

    Grand Funk Railroad Forever!!

  • good melody,harmony,bass,etcetc!!!

  • Funky

  • Love this vid. This is the best one on YOU TUBE. THIS IS MUSIC at it's best!!

  • Mark Farner & GFRxR were a performance vehicle.

They were geared for live performances. With almost no airplay in the early days, this is what made them famous.

They set the standard at which other bands are judged today.

  • now that is rithm maaaaaan

  • These guy's are great and should be in the hall. They got to be the most under-rated band that I can remember. Thanks for posting this rare FUNK!

  • most under rated of all times

  • I AM FEELING THIS !!!!!! Peace from the house of Humongous, witch mountain Costa Rica.

  • You just love it , so powerful , straight fromheart :)

  • this band started my pot smoking. i thank them every fucking day for it Grand Funk rules.

  • Has anyone heard from funk sister Becky...

  • Hey brother. I'm right here. Thanks for asking about your funk sista!!

  • All you can say is wow!

  • wow

  • GENIOS

  • The Railroad and the Zeppelin were my favorite trippers.Wish it could go on forever.

  • Mi Dios rock en serio y en los 70 ya eran actuales!!!
