What I loved about ABC is that every Monday Night we would get different match up like Cubs-Padres or Dodgers-Reds or even Angels-Blue Jays but ever since they moved to ESPN its always either the Red Sox or the Yankees!!
When I was a kid, I dreamed *every single day* that this music was being played while I was being called in from the Red Sox bullpen to shutdown Reggie Jackson, Gregg Nettles, and Thurman Munson. To this day at age 45, I still get goosebumps when I hear this this theme song!
ESPN and Fox don't get it, it's not about fancy graphics and hidden cameras and microphones, it's about your broadcasters telling a story! The broadcasters are as important to the game as the players! What made the game popular was broadcasters who described the game on radio, while most of America never even saw a live ball game.
The Monday night game two weeks later was the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, after all the Yankees returned from Canton, OH, following Thurman Munson's funeral.....who could have thought on July 23, 1979, what the tone of baseball would be just two short weeks later?
I loved that theme, but as a Oriole fan, all I can remember is that letdown in the World Series! It still hurt today! But Great memories nonetheless! Who has the best theme now? 'Cause Im not really feelin' too many of them. I'll go out on a limb and say the best theme now is the Sunday Night Football theme.
I've remembered select opening themes to shows over the years and always liked how this has that violin octave jumping at :54 and the french horns playing tenuto over the finale. You musicians...try keeping time, it constantly switches between measures of 3/4, 4/4, and even 5/4.
My most memorable Monday Night Baseball moment was when Rick Burlson of the Red Sox helped turn a triple play, and they flashed "TRIPLE PLAY" on the screen.
Due to the large amount of unfamiliar logos, here's a rundown: 1 Yankees/Royals 2 Orioles/Cubs 3 Red Sox/Expos 4 Indians/Braves 5 Tigers/Reds 6 Brewers/Mets 7 Phillies/Pirates 8 Rangers/Cardinals 9 Athletics/Giants _ Astros/Dodgers R Twins/Padres H White Sox/Mariners E Angels/Blue Jays
As a baseball fan and little leaguer at the time, I absolutely loved this theme! The sequence of all the MLB team logos in the baseball scoreboard was a classy touch; and as a Canadian, I always used to get so giddy when the camera zoomed in on the Blue Jays logo! lol
They were the worst team in baseball, but they were still my team.
Thanks also Blank77 for identifying the angry Yankees' players in the intro.
ABC, bring back Monday Night Baseball and no other theme than this one!
WOW!!!!! I always enjoyed that theme. I couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone know the composer of that theme? I'd like to buy it. I loved MNB !!! I remembered the 1977 World Series, and the 1978 ALCS, using that theme. I remembered Howard Cosell, and Keith Jackson. That's when baseball was at it's best!!!!!!!
Thank you so very much for uploading this version of ABC's Monday Night Baseball. This was the very best version of any kind of Baseball Opening. Is there a way we can keep this upoalded here on You Tube?
As per that part where Lou Piniella was tagged out at home, apparently he thought he was safe, because I saw him and one other Yankee arguing with ump Ron Luciano.
@bmasters1981 That other Yankee arguing with Luciano was first baseman,Chris Chambliss.Don't know why they were shouting about,Pinella was out on that play.
BTW:That was classic baseball on TV in those days.Saturday games on NBC and the Monday night games on ABC.I miss those days.
@blank77 Thanks! I was wondering who that other Yankee was, but now I know. And you're absolutely correct-- that was classic baseball then. It can be that way again if only FOX would get out of it.
This is simply the best theme of them all! Haven't heard this since I don't know when. It's so much better than what you hear these days from ESPN or Fox. This is when I started to get back into baseball. Thanks for posting!
Interesting to know: Carl Yastrzemski was seeking his 400th career HR at the date of this broadcast, July 23. Yaz would accomplish the feat the next day against Oakland's Mike Morgan. Then, on Sept. 12, the 1967 AL Triple Crown winner and MVP delivered his 3,000th hit off the Yankees' Jim Beattie. As for this particular theme, it was used from 1977 until the '81 World Series.
Quick question now, maxcareyhof: between 0:38-0:46, as many times as I have viewed this clip (I'm obsessed with it! LOL), isn't that Lou Piniella in his Yankee days being tagged out at home by John Wathan of the Royals in the 1978 ALCS? I just thought that was humorous because it reminds me of Sweet Lou to this day.
Thank you again for posting such a gem! Always will watch this to no end.
Additional comment...I loved this theme. I miss it. I remember watching game six of the World Series with my then girlfriend and her family...October 16, 1979...Pittsburgh beat Baltimore...and we all were Pirate fans. Also memorable since I got my first kiss during that game. Thank you for the memory!
