according to viewsonic the gtablet will not be getting no future os upgrade to it, even though it well capable of it, they not taking it futher according to there discussion on their facebook page. also if you use custom rom you will void warranty but they have the custom dev link on their website. now if you not going to be putting no future os upgrade the gtablet why get upset if some does it and void the warranty it like saying you upgrade your cpu from xp to win7 void warranty.
just for the record in the beginning when the gtablet came out there was no update but now viewsonic has a update for it when you are connected by wifi. also it does support flash when you update with the update that viewsonic sent to it. also alot of you going to be looking quit silly because while you treaking the device, viewsonic is going to have official gingerbread and honeycomb officially updated for the device. you are loosing your waranty by treaking it.
Bought my gtab during the winter, so I only recently took it outside in the mid afternoon. It was a bit overcast and I was sitting in the shade, but even with the display brightness at max, I could barely see anything.
@mkashiff1 It's the viewfinder for the Looxcie camera I was using so I was trying to check what I was looking at was actually being seen by the camcorder. Newer reviews are better quality such as the DVP review I posted last night. Thanks though!
If you were using a head-mounted camera for this video, don't use it again. The moving around of the image on the screen distracts from what you are trying to relay to the viewers.
Sorry about the confusion over the HDMI output. Amazon claims it has a mini HDMI output ... just now while typing this I went to the Viewsonic webiste and they said, "HDMI dock (optional)" so I guess it has HDMI out but you have to buy a dock of some sort. Lame. Dell does the same thing (you have to buy a separate dock). Oh well. Thanks for the video.
I'm gonna start by saying I really enjoyed the review. I do believe however you need work on your execution. I think you have important information in your review that people will run over because of how it is presented. If you take the time to focus on it more and adjust little things such as not messing with your phone ever minute or so I think you'd have a fantastic video. Just something to think about. You could get more views with a little polish. I'd love to see you get more views. -Adam
@Metzhara Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. This was kind of a rush job, for some reason no one believed I actually owned this device at the time. Next review will be shot with a tripod in 1080p via a Sony A33 DSLT and edited with software to give it a nice polished look :D Probably will do the Dell Venue Pro or something next.
Sorry for the late response been busy lately, I honestly can't remember where I got the flash I i believe it was a port from another tablet. No charge through mini USB. I hope it gets 3.0 that would be a good move on Viewsonic's part.
@NatePride did you try to install flash 10.1 from market or from side load? because i couldnt get the sideload to install on my HTC desire it had to come from the market, and can it be charged through the mini USB slot?
No matter how you look at it either short term or long custom ui sucks and while it adds a certain sense of usability it hinders the OS in certain ways not to mention its the out of the box experience not what you can modify cause that's just icying for those of wish would like to explore
There us much more that I wish I could say but I'm commenting through the YouTube app on my nexus one and although IOS4 is a phone OS things are done right out of the gate but doesn't matter since I'm 4 days away from my Motorola xoom
I don't care if this product wasn't well produced or has manufacturer defects. The fact that android allows any and all manufacturers to make their own rendition of a tablet or phone is what makes me like android more than iOs. I hate being locked into specific hardware with no options for upgrade until apple tells me I can.
There isn't an android tablet out right now that competes with an ipad cause non of the software is optimized for tablets morons its a phone OS in a larger scale but android 3.0 changes that also currently that version of android only supports single core
@Trillville43 completely bogus, the gtablet can definitely out perform the ipad using only 2.2, true that the second core of the arm 9 is locked until honeycomb's release, but what the ipad will never have is a nvidia terga 2 an 8 core mobile monster and that can be used by 2.2, and once 3.0 is released and you are able to overclock you can easily get the dual core arm 9 to 2.0Ghz (its designed hz) that should out perform most budget laptops with atom/i3 processors and intel HD GPU's
I love how you dipshits are so quick to jump on anyone that compares this to an iPad as a fanboy. This thing is obviously a piece of shit, especially compared to an iPad. The reviews all over the internet are nothing but horrible. The iPad is clearly a FAR superior product. Say what you will about Apple, but at least they don't release hacky, race to market products like ViewSonic.
@nofxslc that is because viewsonic releases it with their version of 2.2 that is weighted down with programs that they feel are good, rooting the device and flashing a custom 2.2 rom makes moderately superior to the ipad and once 3.0 is released it will far out perform the ipad, and once a custom rom of 3.0 is released it will be in another league than the ipad, that being said i like the ipad setup better than android, and wish i could get iOS4 on the viewsonic or the toshiba tablet coming soon
Nothing wrong with the device, they were recalling due to the software being so crappy the return rate was ridiculous. @aparchedwarlus It was shot with a Looxcie Camcorder (A bluetooth headset with camera on it) so you can't expect much camera for that size. I had an HD camcorder but decided to use looxcie because it frees up the hands. Thanks though!
God I want one so bad!!! I think I might just go get one right now!!! Holy cow the whole tablet thing is amazing, there are many times I just hate my G1, because I cant upgrade till 2011! Should I wait for the holiday?
@johnyjoe2k this is a nice tablet but as I said in the review the software sucks. look at my video of when i rooted it and you can see what it does once you get hacking a little bit.
Please don't tell me you're an Apple fanboy/girl! I have been looking into the G Tablet and once cyanogened it is a beast. But I heard some more 1.6Ghz and 1-2GB RAM versions are coming out. Better wait, maybe during or after the holiday I can find one.
@johnyjoe2k how in the hell did you get that I'm an Apple fanboy? just because I returned this tablet because it's obvious Android isn't ready for tablets yet. My NEXUS ONE is perfect but this tablet is not.
Can an iPad play any type of video you want? Can you customize almost anything about it? The answer is no, you can't. Get one of these, install clockworkmod and a different rom, such as TnT Lite, and then the GTab really shines.
Nice review! Im stuck between this and the 101. Does this play divx off a network smb share from a pc? Is the flash working and stable now, or just a hack? any info on tv out like the 101?
and flash was very stable once I got it hacked on, included version of 'flash' isn't really flash haha it's 'flash lite' which does absolutely nothing but help some ads display
Hey guys i just bought one and Im not going to lie I think it sucks...its completly brand new so I think I might sell it...if your interested please message me.
@NatePride Just got it installed and it works like a champ. Now if only I could solve this bug of the audio not working. Movies, websites, music, nothing is working.
@BobSutan I just bought a Tab and I noticed this was on sale for black friday. I enjoy my tab but a bigger screen would be good. Would you reccomend the viewsonic or should I stick with my tab
@ohio007 you can use the built in ES File Explorer to transfer/view files on the usb device, internal memory, and micro sd card. It also has a micro usb you can use to plug up to the computer to transfer files from the internal memory to the computer.
@DJTEVAdotCOM yeah well this is going back it was more of an experiment. The galaxy tab is just a little too pricey for the lack of hardware, software on it is nice though.
Hi. NatePride. Im considering, to buy a tablet, and im betewen the epad android tablet and the gtablet, which one is better and why??? thank you verry much, sorry for my spelling, my language is spanish hahaha
@chitosmaster Hey the g tablet has at least twice the performance of the epad. the g tablet also had a higher resolution screen which makes a pretty big difference at the 10 inch screen size.
do you work at Sears? they had the VIewPad 10 on their website and i believe they had it wrong because it said it was Dual Boot yesterday but today they changed it to 10in Android Wifi Tablet and in the description it says G tablet. it makes me mad because it was false advertisement. your tablet doesnt look like the one on the picture on Sears website. just really confused!

it seems like a little bit slow, right? well, i mean compare with Archos 70/101! But it looks cool, looks like Galaxy Tab with bigger size. look smooth on internet browser with multi-touch tho. right?
You know what I want? this thing in my car. I want to rip this thing apart, separate the screen from the hardware, maybe increase the harddrive a bit. This is PERFECT for auto use. PERFECT!
@johnnytluxury - Funny you say that because i was thinking the same thing, I was looking at getting a Acer Aspire netbook and adding in the touch screen kit but this may work out better.

Not suprising that Viewsonic dropped the ball with software. I'm buying one if I can get my hands on one though. I'm sure there will be come good community development in no time
@NatePride, I suggest the Tap UI has killed some resources in the framework. They need to get their CS number up and working or this device will die before it barely exists. No Flash, sluggish UI and no data ports working? Crazy bad.
Yo, great review. Two things, are you gonna keep it? Is it possible to sideload the market onto it? I was trying to talk the future wife into it last night, but now I'm kinda leary of this until Xda gets to work on it.
@YuriyMelnik I don't know about online but it is available in store (We only got 2). Can't Take off the custom overlay unless you flash a new ROM. Closest to stock android without any major hacking is to add a new launcher such as ADW.Launcher like I did.
@NatePride How much device available app storage does the G-Tablet have? The new Archos Gen 8 70 & 101 only have about 200mb of space for apps. Even using apps2sd, that is not much. They stuffed everything on the 512mb rom.
@rushmore69 I think it has ~1.6 GB of app storage because on the storage info screen it says 13.09 gig on SD Card (Which is it's internam memory) and it says "Internal Tablet Storage" 1.62 GB
@NatePride Thanks! So unlike Archos, Viesonic used common sense and allocated internal flash space like the Galaxy Tab. Wonder why the Flash 10.1 is broken? Previews in September reported it working fine. I tried to call the support number, but Viewsonic CS said the phone number was having problems.
I think I will order one and hope the Flash issue gets fixed quickly. Seems the UI may have broken it and also explains why the interface is slower than it should be.
His flash problem is not uncommon. I recall with 2.1 people had to hack the shit out of the OS to get flash 10.1 to replace the stock flash lite. I suppose it will be the same thing with this device, it will need to be rooted so you can remove the stock flash.. then install the proper flash and maybe even something beyond that for the browser to register the plugin... Android is beautiful, but it does make some things harder than they need to be.
hey i got mine yesterday and really enjoy it for the most part. That wifi switch problem and the lag through the homescreen is annoying and i hope they fix it or xda gets to it. You have any problems trying to put an sd card in yours? when i put my 8 gig in there my tablet doesn't see it.
@NatePride Wow, it really won't read either port? What's the point of even having the ports on the thing. This is sounding kinda crappy unless it gets hacked apart by the community.
@dbtorreliob 15% restocking fee. Im going to return mine tomorrow...it just doesnt seem to be on devs watch list right now to get it rooted and rom'd. Ah well.
@serialtoon If Flash does not work, you can return it with NO restock fee, since defective. It is a published spec on the box that does not work. Not to mention apparently the microsd and USB does not work either. What kind of QA does Viewsonic use? Their support number for the product does not even work.
@setite Ok awesome if they need me to do anything (ie get files etc.) let me know by responding here I'm a bit of a noob but have dabbled with ADB and whatnot... Rooted and loaded custom ROM on to buddies phone.
This is skinny

@wkpower I'll try to load a different HD video on it than what I used i my software overview and let you know how it is.
NatePride 1 year ago
@NatePride thanks! looking forward to that.

@wkpower
It does not run Windows 7 and never will.

Not suprising that Viewsonic dropped the ball with software. I'm buying one if I can get my hands on one though. I'm sure there will be come good community development in no time
plvaulter006 1 year ago
Damn thats annoying that it can read either ports but again not to much of a big deal to me. Do you think its a hardware or software problem?
k2thejx5 1 year ago
@k2thejx5 it is most definately a software problem
NatePride 1 year ago
@NatePride, I suggest the Tap UI has killed some resources in the framework. They need to get their CS number up and working or this device will die before it barely exists. No Flash, sluggish UI and no data ports working? Crazy bad.
rushmore69 1 year ago
Yo, great review. Two things, are you gonna keep it? Is it possible to sideload the market onto it? I was trying to talk the future wife into it last night, but now I'm kinda leary of this until Xda gets to work on it.
polishhammer83 1 year ago
nice review, went to my local sears and found out a guy just bought all three they had in stock!
roketman600 1 year ago
I'm picking one up tonight too from my local sears. Ordered the last one they had :D
How did you load ADW on it?
r34p3rex 1 year ago
Is this available for sale? I own AndroidCircuit and we have been waiting patiently for a few of our tablets to come in for review.
YuriyMelnik 1 year ago
@YuriyMelnik Yes it's available for sale now from Sears for 379$ on sale
NatePride 1 year ago
@NatePride Thanks for the quick reply!
Is it online or available in store? is it possible to take off the custom overlay? Do they provide a way for a 'stock' android experience?
YuriyMelnik 1 year ago
@YuriyMelnik I don't know about online but it is available in store (We only got 2). Can't Take off the custom overlay unless you flash a new ROM. Closest to stock android without any major hacking is to add a new launcher such as ADW.Launcher like I did.

@NatePride How much device available app storage does the G-Tablet have? The new Archos Gen 8 70 & 101 only have about 200mb of space for apps. Even using apps2sd, that is not much. They stuffed everything on the 512mb rom.
rushmore69 1 year ago
@rushmore69 I think it has ~1.6 GB of app storage because on the storage info screen it says 13.09 gig on SD Card (Which is it's internam memory) and it says "Internal Tablet Storage" 1.62 GB
NatePride 1 year ago
@NatePride Thanks!
Seems the UI may have broken it and also explains why the interface is slower than it should be.
rushmore69 1 year ago
Does it have GPS? What about a compass? Thank you for your review.
YetAnotherPilot 1 year ago
@YetAnotherPilot No GPS or Digital Compass on the device.
NatePride 1 year ago
Once XDA get their hands on this I'm interested, but with that lame skin, no way.
vitriolix 1 year ago
What is the model #? Thanks
hazardy 1 year ago
@hazardy According to ViewSonic the model # on the back of the device is UPC300-2.2

I ran quadrant last night and it performs well. Pic at link in info.

Android is beautiful, but it does make some things harder than they need to be.
setite 1 year ago
hey i got mine yesterday and really enjoy it for the most part. That wifi switch problem and the lag through the homescreen is annoying and i hope they fix it or xda gets to it. You have any problems trying to put an sd card in yours? when i put my 8 gig in there my tablet doesn't see it.
k2thejx5 1 year ago
@k2thejx5 Yes the tablet won't recognize Micro SD cars or USB drives. Not even when browsing to them with ES File Browser and Astro File manager
NatePride 1 year ago
@NatePride You just blew my bubble. It has micro sd and USB host, but neither can be read. Kind of no point.
rushmore69 1 year ago
@NatePride Wow, it really won't read either port? What's the point of even having the ports on the thing. This is sounding kinda crappy unless it gets hacked apart by the community.
polishhammer83 1 year ago
@polishhammer83 yeah we definately need to start hacking on this thing.
NatePride 1 year ago
when you go to the Browser settings does it list anything like 'Enable plug-ins' or anything else flash related?
or, does it give you any info when you go here
(just google "Flash version checker" if link doesnt work.
from a hardware perspective this thing looks great. hopefully someone is planning on rooting it and getting CM6 or something less buggy on it.
OH. and any update on the USB host?
superD117 1 year ago
@superD117 I ran a flash version checker and it wouldn't even tell me what version just a bunch of jibberish and symbols came up.
NatePride 1 year ago
well guess ill be waiting for it to be hacked back to stock android! thanks for review, big help. Whats sears return policy?
dbtorreliob 1 year ago
@dbtorreliob 15% restocking fee. Im going to return mine tomorrow...it just doesnt seem to be on devs watch list right now to get it rooted and rom'd. Ah well.
serialtoon 1 year ago
@serialtoon If Flash does not work, you can return it with NO restock fee, since defective. It is a published spec on the box that does not work. Not to mention apparently the microsd and USB does not work either. What kind of QA does Viewsonic use? Their support number for the product does not even work.
rushmore69 1 year ago
Hey man i picked one up tonight and it is absolutely horrible! Its slow and its not stock froyo.
serialtoon 1 year ago
@serialtoon You're right that's why it needs a bit of hacking :)
NatePride 1 year ago
I linked this in a thread on XDA devs.. hopefully someone manages to get rid of the cap n tap crap.. and gets a hacked market on it.
setite 1 year ago
@setite Ok awesome if they need me to do anything (ie get files etc.) let me know by responding here I'm a bit of a noob but have dabbled with ADB and whatnot... Rooted and loaded custom ROM on to buddies phone.
