one of my fav. musicians,go back to the grisman quintet sessions, those trips to the carlisle bluegrass festivalswhen a teenager ,who new, bill monroe, lester flatt, sam bush, the seldom scene, doc watson,i remember seeing marty stuart, maybe 12 years old , playing mandolin with lester flat,
Does anybody understand the beginning of the video? what does it mean? Its like a rich musician, finds his bum friend to make music? explain please, i think it looks cool, but im just not grasping it i guess, help me to understand, i want to get chills, lol
@bigrussthefusss - Jerry wrote and played a number of songs that were down on drinking, Wharf Rat and Loser spring to mind here, and the bar scene in general, eg Crosstown Bar and Bertha and Fire on the Mountain. This is the only video EVER of Jerry in a suit so I think he was trying to make a point ie: "The thrill is gone, I'm free" ;.)
Two great musicians bouncing off each other and having fun at the same time-- how much better does it get? Thanks so much for posting this. I love it!
such a cool song! I saw this song more than five years ago and I kept it in my memory. I just bought the CD and only after that I remembered I can see the clip on YT. Cool and elegant !

so does anybody else think this totally blows? i mean... this is the cheesiest production/ blandest song i can imagine griman AND jerry garcia doing. JERRY GARCIA! and i really like grisman though. i play a couple of his songs in my band. but this? NOOOOOO. no. nuh. uh. blows.
man, what are you on about ! this song and the entire album is a brilliant collaboration or two amazing musicians. They both get their fair share of solos, Jerry does some great vocals, and no way is David Grismans mandolin playing boring or repetitive !
You might be right about the particular instrument in the video, but Grisman is a noted collector and player of vintage instruments and does not, to the best of my knowledge "play" any one in the same way that Clapton, for instance, "plays" strats.
Garcia, for the most part, played Alvarez acoustics - I think this is an old Gibson hollow body in the video, but I think that was for looks, and is not what he is playing on the album.
[Gibson hollow body in the video, but I think that was for looks, and is not what he is playing on the album. ] That's because all true bluegrass musicians play vintage Martins. XD
This album is one of my favorites. Does anybody know what brand mandolin that is? It looks like Jerry is playing a Guild. It says alot about a musicain on what they choose to play. What they prefer is interesting.....
I read that Grismans Mando in the video is probably a short necked Gibson F-10 converted to an F-5 scale. Jerry is definatly playing a Gibson archtop of some kind...
jerry was a jukebox of great music, and by that i mean that if it was heartfelt and good....jerry knew it!!!!! so sad to see a musical genius slip by so many ignorant hands. he was a lover of good ole classical music...bluegrass,folk,country,r&r....jerry, lay down my dear brother, lay down and take your rest, please lay your hand down on your saviors breast, i love you, oh but jesus loves you the best and i bid you goodnight, goodnight, goooooooooooooooodnight
I rember seeing this video on pbs when it first came out in the late 80'S?? I was in Junior high....I was hooked...It was so refreshing amidst the schwag 80's hairbands... To all who are hating on Jerry and this video as the Buhist say there is no wearing out of ignorance....
Nicely said. He was such a treasure. Jerry was comfortable and competant in any genre and musical style. From his folk roots and jugband, to rock & roll, jazz and bluegrass, and even latino music, he flourished with six-string guitar, five-string banjo and pedal steel to bring us to our knees with emotion. What a loss!
If it's not what you expected oh well, it's magic to me. The Dawg is the best in his trade and Jerry touched the Soul to most of his fans like myself. Miss you JERRY !!!!!
I have to disagree. I like Grisman very much, but the solo work is minimal and vocals are embarrassingly bad. Alas, that instrumentalists like this think they can sing!
obviously not a buff. jerry himself was quoted more than once saying he hated singing and wished it wasn't needed. he only got confident about it after hearing Hendrix sing. he never once reckoned himself a singer, and I gather the same is probably true for Dawg.
Is this the video Grisman is suing over? What a control freak. Sounds like Garcia's solo is edited out of the mix. Have to have a look at the DVD (which I own) and see how it sounds there.
The director of this video, Justin Kreutzmann (son of Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann) was amazed at Garcia's professionalism for letting them trim his beard and hair and dressing him up. He looks and sounds great in this.

the stuff between 2:05 and 2:45 is classic...
it reminds me of a movie, but I cannot remember the name of it...
I am not sure the music in stereo on this though...
