He's great here, but he was the reason Little Walter recordings stayed consistently great. Why? Because Willie Dixon said, Big Walter had something to do with ALL of Little Walter's recordings. So Big Walter just didnt step it up here, he remained in that position. The Best, BIG Walter!
@TheIsraDave For more of Big Walter at his best get Johnny Young - Chicago Blues if you don't already have it. Half of the record is Big Walter the other half is James Cotton. Probably the best Cotton ever played.
Beautiful power. He drives the band, but Jimmy Rogers' guitar in the background during Walter's solo, is so subtle, SO musically perfect. This song is a gem. I had this 45 many years ago...(sigh).
Everybody in the know knows about Little Walter who was consistently great at least on recordings, but this is Big Walter "Shaky" Horton rising above his norm to build one of the finest electric Harp solos ever recorded. That this song doesn't have one million hits is a crime against nature. Listen to this really loud to catch all the subtle nuance. Absolutely passionate AND brilliant.
@enorbet2 Agree 100%,one of the great 50s "high compression" harp solos, when I 1st heard it 35yrs. ago after getting the Chess "Chicago Bound" Jimmy Rogers LP,I had to get all the Big Walter stuff I could get my hands on.
Anyone notice that the drums are on one and three instead of 2 and 4 for the first 4 bars? Kinda cool how he rolled it back in and ended up on the 2 and 4.
@strachom thats the blues as sonny boy said when they asked him -how many bars are in the 12 bar blues? and sonny said - as much as i want them to be. real blues its a feeling bars and scales are usefull but not build on concrete :)
@Iddyboy Horton was once known as "Little" Walter, but when Jacobs made a name for himself, Horton then became Big Walter.....RPM Records gave him the nickname "Mumbles" but Horton wasn't exactly thrilled by it....
Yes, it sure was a golden age for music and it's progress. I do find new music great too, but one have to look for it. It sure won't be played on the radio or TV. :-)
One of the true perfect blues performances on record..An absolute AAA classic.

I fucking hate Gary Moore's obnoxious shredder-style guitar playing. He makes great blues songs sound like '80s hair metal hits.
