this might be trivial, but how can a man who is so outspoken against corporate hegemony be a fucking smoker??? WHY mos, why?? that's so subversive and self-defeating.
@iigunzent Yo no disrespect man... But how will conforming to the media's criteria help? They're not stupid. If his lyrics are conveying a message that is against what they are 'comfortable' with then they are not going to allow it. Merely making it sound like your typical mainstream track isn't going to gain it acceptance. Like mos said you have to go straight to the people and not rely on these corporations to aid you, because chances are they will do the complete opposite.
(that last part) "Approval from thegatekeeper"/(God) is one of ways to reach out to his people, his children.. and only the hungry and wise will receive and undeerstand that..
@iigunzent tech n9ne has done exactly what you said in a sense that the industry has opened up to him and hes using mainstream artists on his tracks and sometimes using mainstream sounding beats but still reppin him
The one thing that I'd love to discuss with Mos is this Question "If The media format is a certain thing, and you have a certain message to get across, Then why not conform in a sense to get your message across? Meaning Why not make a record that SOUNDS like what they want, while putting the message across with what you're saying. Take an approach of 'It's not WHAT you say, but HOW you say it."
@iigunzent because the media isn't concerned about HOW you say it. so long that its THEIR message that you're conveying to their audiences. he's right, if you want to tell the people what YOU want to say and how YOU want it to sound, you have to go straight to the people.
I wish i can be in a round table with this guy im an inspiring hip hop artist and i feel him when he said a quote from one of the professors saying you should write as if your are the only ones who would understand. Love that becuase i feel iam misunderstood interms of my overall message and i will live by that. Mos Def Great Artist and a mind.
These radio stations are wack and it's great that satellite radio is kicking their ass. Hopefully let's put regular radio out of business. Their format is unrealistic or superhuman.
Thank you so much. Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharohe Monch, Consequence, The Roots, The Lonely Island, Too Short, E-40, Nipsey Hussle, Scarface, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Ray Cash, Kardinal Offishall, Solitare, Socrates, K-os, K'naan, Bossman deserve as much radio play as Lil Wayne, TI, Young Jeezy, Drake, 50 Cent, and etc..
i fuckin love how the interviewer lights mos's cig even tho he got up 2 grab a light lol... respect
