  • grew up with old ones ,and still the best in 2011

  • Dusty Springfield had a marvelous voice. I thik this great song was written by her brother.

  • @polymath1944 In fact, the song was written by Jack Rhodes and Dick Reynolds, was first recorded by Wanda Jackson in 1956.

  • I wonder how many of us look back now and were happy with his money and his name? Funny living in the sixties twice 1960's now in my 60's. Not quite what we expected was it?

  • sure miss you dusty see ya in heaven

  • meh...out of respect, I gave Dusty's version a listen (heard Skeeter Davis' version first) I prefer Skeeter's version. Love Dusty's other work mind, so no, I'm not an ignorant hater with no sense of quality ^^

  • I can still remember exactly where i was when I first heard this back in '62...

  • Money and name doesn't mean a thing, if there is no mutual love ... by-the-way ... this is really sweet ... tks. Mate ... from Bp.

  • Great 'lift' at 0:23

  • I have this on 45 and still play it on my jukebox, first heard it on Brian Matthews on Radio 2...wonderful

  • Looked for this version when it came out... shops here never heard of it. 30 yrs later Time Life put it on a tape of hits from the Folk Song era. Linda Rhonstadt does a version of it too... this one is the best.

  • 1962

  • I had the original 45 as a child...thought this was a great sound. Dusty Springfield went on to fame singing 'I Only Want to Be With You.'

  • Did she also sing son of a preacher man?

  • Yes

  • @DoofsterDan yes. best selling song in her career.

  • surfside48 (7 months ago)

    +3

    on

lol Tom Springfield is his real name!! and not her brother, he ran the group, , She kept the name after she went solo, Tom Springfield went on to manage n produce many other groups, notab yThe Seekers and the New Seekers.

  • Tom actually was her brother, Dion O'brien. Her given name was Mary Isabel Catherine Bernadette O'brien.

In 1960 she formed a pop-folk trio with her brother Dion O'Brien and Reshad Feild (who was later replaced by Mike Hurst). The new trio changed their names to Dusty, Tom, and Tim Springfield and chose The Springfields as their name during a rehearsal in a field in Somerset in spring.

    Regards

  • soul piercing folk.

  • Oh I remember this version as a favorite. I didn't realize this was Dusty Springfield.

  • First single by a UK group to hit the US top 20 - well over a year before the Beatles.

  • Pretty song

  • I like this song's B-side "Aunt Rhody" fantastic single as a whole.

  • hillbillies are great.

  • Actually, in England, I think they are called "summitwilliams"...and, yes, they are great.

  • if i could sing i would sing like this although i'm no hillbilly. i'm a true confederate from the heart of georgia.

  • So was Stalin...hm...Sorry which Georgia? :-)

  • the state of georgia which i'm proud of.

  • I am glad to hear that...

  • Hi Raven. Is overt racism still going on in 'The Deep South?'. My late father was down that way during WWII (he was in The Royal Navy) and he said that atthat time EVERYTHING was seggregated. Just interested.

  • Factnotfictionpeople-now w/the new president obama it only goes to show that segregation only happens if the blacks or whites choose it. i live w/a black family and i go to a white church by choice and they go to a black church by choice. + it's just part of our heritage.

  • Just great.

  • Great song, not just because of Dusty, but because of near perfect arrangement and writing.

  • I agree...but it's also the vocal blend in this version, I think. The Springfields were all good singers with good ears for pitch and balance. You don't hear a lot of good vocal harmony in tunes lately IMO...and it's a pity.

  • Well this is a cover, the originial song was written in 1956 I forgot who. Janis Joplin covered it in 1964 and 3 legends of country covered it in 1994 (Dolly Tammy Wynett and Loretta Lynn). Also few more.

  • Linda ronstadt also recorded a top version of this.

  • This was one of my favorite songs going way back. Dusty was great in a group and on her own.

  • Not even Dolly Parton can touch this song!

  • Please i wanne see Bambino the greatest song on earth.

  • an amazing song........this is by far the best version! Dusty was great.......you got that right, baby!!!!

  • LaVerne, wernt you lucky to have a record player,we didnt even have a wireless then.I heard this when the funfair came to town, they played this and Jim Reeves continually. Its the one song from the 60,s that still warms me,but try to get Sandy Dennys version, pure emotion~cant find it on youtube

  • The Springfields were the Abba of their day - turning a fairly ordinary folk song into country rock/pop - brilliant!

  • Dusty Springfield, born Mary O'Brien on 4/16/39 in London, England. Died of cancer on 3/2/99 (age 59). Inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame 1999. Her brother Tom must have changed his name to Springfield too. Thats the way his name was listed in Billboards Book of Top 40 Hits, 8th Edition.

  • Google ONEWHITEDUCK a GIFT FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT :-)

  • The version of The Springfields is the best!

  • dusty was the best voice ever

  • no matter what----rockin',jammin tune

  • there was a survey done a few years ago and dusty was rated as the best voice ever!

  • mike hirst (or w/e his name is) did a lectureat my school today :D

  • huh, wat then shall i say, i like , i like.....

    Tapping Toes In Texas

  • The original version of this song was recorded by Wanda Jackson in 1956. It's on YouTube under WANDA JACKSON - SILVER THREADS AND GOLDEN NEEDLES !! 78 RPM!

  • This is the best version by far.

  • Totally !!!

  • ditto

  • Did the song ever chart on the country charts.

  • After 45 years still a sensational sound .. can't help but join in the chorus. Worth checking the Springfields story on Allmusic. Excellent fidelity, tks Mr oldibutgoodi54. Tks too andremedia & glnelson56 for your contributions.

  • Fantastic!!! Love you, Dusty!

  • This Springfields version is outrageous - walking the line of American Folk, Surf and Pop...and done in England! In a way it defies logic!!!

  • Music from the Southern Appalachians, a major influence on American Roots Music, descended directly from Scottish, Irish and English traditional music. Considering that fact, it is not so far-fetched that the Springfields sing "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" so naturally. They do a beautiful job here and I like their version very much!

  • Thanks for providing an excellent insight.

  • Hi.

    Interesting and informed comment;

Interesting- I spent some time in the States,

looved the Appalachian region, was tickled by all the Scots, Irish English and Welsh connections.

  • Hi Jigaboo,

Yes, and we weren't very welcome when we first arrived here. Glad to know that you enjoyed the region. A friend of mine, from Glasgow, said she can pick up bits and pieces of Scottish influence in the dialect...even today..what she understands of it. Anyway, we loved our music and almost everyone played, sang, or did some of both. The Springfields certainly covered a lot of musical styles in their time and this song has certainly been covered by a ton of folks.

  • Interesting!

  • No doubt, this is the BEST version!

  • Best version--hands down! Dusty's voice forms the iron spine of this amazing track.

  • Dusty, Rick, Tom, who all went on to bigger and better things. But what a great beginning. Thanks for posting.

  • This is great!!!

  • The best version...timeless!

  • This is my favourite version of this song, and I'm only 25! Love the oldies!

  • Yeh I sure remember this one!!!

  • Dude, we are linking the fire out of you! Great stuff that I haven't heard in years and for the most part had just resigned myself to forget. You brought back some great memories and helped preserve a real treasure. Thank you!
