We've got a mix--a couple of us have English setters out of the Wicksall line (Michigan dogs); one of our guys has a couple of Gordon setters; a couple of guys have German shorthairs; and a couple of guys have labs. Sort of all over the place. But of course, the English setters are the best! ;-)
@frankzappai oh i agree with you. mine just died about a year ago it was a english blue belton. so i hunting this season mostly with out a dog, worst year ever!! so i am lloking for a new dog. :)
hows your hunting going this fall? ive only got up there twice and its either rained or snowed, and the grouse are completely shut down. turning out to be a pretty poor year for me.
we spent a week there last week around Columbus Day. We actually mostly ended up hunting around Clam Lake and had excellent luck there, even with the snow. With a one year old dog, managed to take five grouse and three woodcock over the course of the week, so we were happy.
cant wait till i get a dog outta college. i dont know what the deal is, but it seems like whenever i hunt up there in the snow, especially in dec and jan, its like they all disappear from the coverts. Ive even gone up in march shed hunting and found snow dens in the middle of the trails, and fresh ones too, but hardly ever see them in the snow. idk weird.
idk if my last post worked. Anyway i was reading the article The Deer Camp Time Forgot in the newest American Hunter and i got this feeling i had seen the cabin on the cover somewhere. Then it hit me that it was the cabin at :34 in the video!! Thats pretty cool. Idk if u had seen the article or not, but thought id clue you in if you hadn't, seeing that it sounds like your from Maine. Very nice article too.
you've got a pretty good eye there, baconsniffer. yep, that's Old T in the background, and the handsome feller posing up front is none other than the Richard "Clark" Stedman mentioned in the article.
We should be there again this fall for grouse. Maybe we'll see you around Clam Lake.
That wouldnt happen to be your group that camps in the corner of that square clearing with a couple big trailers that say grouse camp on a banner on the side would it? I Its on the north side of Forest Road 182 just east of twin lakes. I assume u eat lunch at the elkhorn in clam lake. small world isn't it?
Baconsniffer: I accidentally hit "remove" rather than reply. sorry about that. Our camp is on the Conley Road near Cayuga. We hunt all around the area.
Wow!!! i was just reading the article The Deer Camp Time Forgot in the newest American Hunter and i got this feeling i had seen the cabin in the front of the article somewhere. Turns out its your cabin at :34 in the video!!! howd u guys swing that deal? cool article though idk if you knew about it or not but thought id make sure!!
very nice video. thats what its all about-- tradition and family. i love hunting grouse around clam lake, wi with my Browning Side by Side. Where were you and what doubles were you shooting?
photos are both from Maine, where we've hunted near Spider and Haymock Lakes and the Allegash waterway, and in Wisconsin just south of Mellen, where we've got access to a camp, so we know the Clam Lake area very well--always stop for lunch there. thanks for the comment! maybe we'll see you this fall, bird numbers are supposed to be on the rise.
kind of forgot to answer the gun question--we've got everything in camp, from LC Smiths to modern Ithaca SKBs. I shoot a couple of fairly beat up Parkers, one in 12 ga and the other in 16. they get the job done. :-)
awesome video. the music fits in perfectly! u guys are real lucky to have a hunting camp like that
