Dear friend there were thousands of expectators in that opening cermony.I love that if someone is alive and he or she watched your this upload and write his or her emotions of that time or players who participate in these games?
I am impatient if someone write his or her comments about that cermony because you and me age now 43
if you have any other happy memory of 70s then I am impatiently wait for your reply.
@LastCommodore Jim McKay mentioned it was a sad reminder of US runner Steve Prefontaine, who would have been a favorite in the 5000m but was killed in a 1975 car crash.
@AlexHWalker They are indeed married, and I think MTL 1976 was the 1st time they ever met. As a CDN, I'm proud of that. But it bugs me lots that we won no golds that year. I think that's just 1 of many reasons we will never get to host a summer olympix ever again
@SnowbirdFlock I wouldn't be too sure remember Canada hosted the winter olympics again even after no golds in Calgary also if Canada hosts The Commonwealth Games or the Pan American games (which it just happens to in 2015) it could use that as a launch pad to get the Olympics.
@AlexHWalker The ioc is all-to-happy to give us WINTER olympix, maybe to re-enforce our stupid snow-&-ice reputation. Toronto was heavily-favoured to win the summer olympix in 96, but the ioc at the last minute gave them to Atlanta. 80% of the world doesn't even give a damn about the Winter olympix. Myself, I think the ioc has something against Canada
Its Montreal, theres no doubt, it was the Queen of England that declared it opened that I remember. Also, the year 1976 was also the 1st time a separatist party was elected in Quebec so I find it funny that the Queen of England opened the games.
At the time of the Olympics, the election hadn't happened yet. And she's the Queen of Canada too (I'm sure you know that, but you kept on referring to her as 'The Queen of England'), and as head of state it makes perfect sense for her to open the Olympics.
LMAO! She's not the "Queen of Canada". That just sounds hilarious. She's the Queen of England, and Canada never became independent from England, or the British Monarch, or whatever the hell it's dependent on.
@italianjen29 Actually, she is NOT the Queen of England. Under the Acts of Union of 1707, 1801, and 1922, she is the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She is also the reigning monarch and official head of state of 15 other independent nations - Canada being one of those nations. So, Elizabeth opened the Montreal Olympics as Queen of Canada. Not as you put it, as "Queen of England"...a title last held by Queen Anne, and ceased to exist after 1707.
it was the Ode to the Flame, according to the official report of the 1976 Olympics. You can find the song probably on the Music for the Ceremonies album, but is a pretty hard one to find
The gentleman co-carrying the torch was Stefan Prefontaine. No, not THAT Pre, but another runner of the same name. I'll never forget McKay's voice shaking when he announced it. Pre had died the year before and the track & field world were still pretty upset about it.
If someone have a video of the officials and athletes oaths please send it to youtube. My father in law was the one who present the officials oaths. Si vous avez un video du serment des athlètes et des officiels, svp placez le sur youtube car mon beau-père a présenté le serment des officiels et j'aimerai bien revoir ce beau moment. Merci
1972-munich massacre, 1976- improper preparation, 1980 & 1984- back to back boycott. i don't feel the olympic spirit. how about beijing 2008? don't expect another boycott. this is not ice age!
The problems at the olympic movement started to be noticed at these games (economic problems), but the ones who, in reality, almost destroyed the olympic movement were Moscow (boycott). These both problems made Lord Killanin to resign in favor of Samaranch.
Too bad there seems to be no existing recording of the full length opening ceremony. Would've loved to see that. But this is also a great clip. Thanks for posting.

These games must've been quite embarassing, an unfinished stadium, debts that lasted 30 years, no golds for canada, must've been bad.
I read somewhere the two lighters are married now.
