  • This is a beautiful little film. It really evokes the wonderful, healing feeling I had when I first saw them live. Thank you.

  • fabulous

  • Attended a great concert by them at the Roundhouse, London, in around 1981.

  • Iba se Malachi; Ire lona Iponri atiwo Orun

  • Yes! this is Great! I do remember them!

  • The original Art Ensemble typically rehearsed for about 8 hours a day. Drummer Famadou Don Moye related that to me years ago. Even the all percussion segments are rehearsed compositions. How they describe/labeled their music is as GREAT BLACK MUSIC--ANCIENT AND TO THE FUTURE. That covers a lot of idiomatic ground wdnt you say? With them I'd say the ratio is 60% composed to 40% improvised at any given section. Course like Wayne Shorter said improv is composition sped up. and vice versa.

  • This is sooooo powerful.

  • nice X10 time

  • Anyone know where i can download Pan Burundi?? I REALLY want it!!+

  • These cats are great I worked with several of them.

  • Hey guys

They certainly had so called free jazz elements but were outside all the labels they

    were branded with.

The great thing was they could sound like they were playing rehearsed music while it was totally free...so i think the joke was on all the critics

  • the incomparable art ensemble of chicago. some of the absolute best.

  • Great, Lester Bowie did performance at my shcool in 75

  • yes it is free jazz, i like lester bowie for his project with polish yass group Miłość (Love), yass is jazz style (and life style) created by Tymon Tymański, it's kind of "dirty" free jazz

  • Is this really Free Jazz? Need to know it

  • Yes, this is free jazz

  • no, its not... their sound is pretty hard to describe, but some call it "modern creative", or to be practical, plain avant garde... free fazz doesn't have any guide lines most of the time...as in Sam Rivers, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, later stuff from Coltrane and some recordings of AMM

  • Did it cost you anything?

  • I don't know if it really counts as free jazz.

it's prepared since they're playing a lot of the same rhythms and stopping at the same time.

doesn't make it bad, just makes it something other than free

  • nothing is free

    not in this world

  • Jazzupright, sure, this one's more, um ... progressive burlesque trad jazz??

try the clip of them with cecil taylor to hear free.
