Nothing replaces intelligence and creation, too bad that broadway has lost this type of creative ambition. An amazing show, I saw at the DCP in LA. And Mako actually moved into our home after we left our duplex in the Mircle Mile.
How fascinating. This show was my first steady contract on Broadway. I took over for someone who left to go elsewhere. I was thrilled to be a part of the show, even for only the last 10 weeks. This recording was made while I was in the band. We got paid next-to-nothing because we were told it would be for viewing ONLY in JAPAN and would never be seen in the US of dear old A. Ah, well, "the check is in the mail" too. It's a great memory. I love Sondheim forever! Hail to the chief!
Wow... I'm so glad Equity hasn't forced this off YouTube. Previously, the only place to see this video was the Billy Rose Collection of NYPL at Lincoln Center. I echo the hopes of a previous post here that this will be released onto DVD as it was originally taped and edited for broadcast (unlike most of the Billy Rose Collection, which are exclusively archival recordings).
This collection is amazing. I've only seen one or two other complete musicals presented on youtube. Thank you. So much. (PS I got to see this at Museum of TV and Radio in LA with Gedde Watanable in the audience.)
It's great, but yet I prefer Sweeney Todd, just because of the overall drama of the latter. Also I like Sweeney's lyrics more. I like this as much though as, for example, A Little Night Music. I also love Company ;)
Thank you so much for posting this! I've owned the soundtrack for this cast for over a year and always wished I could see what was going on when they sang... Now I can! :)
This was Broadcast on Japanese television many years ago. I'm hoping it will be professionally released on DVD in the future (it apparently was going to happen for Sondheim's birthday a few years ago but never happened)
I'd like to say a hearfelt thank you for posting this. I never thought I'd get to see this and that I'd have to rely on the soundtrack to get the plot. This means a lot, thanks so much.

Boris Aronson's sets were ravishing and appeared washed-out but at least there are fragments - brush strokes of his genius.

Just about the best gift I could ask for. Now, could you please transport me back in time to visit the original Penn Station?

Thank you so much for this gem. Indifferent quality, yes - but it's clear this was an astonishing production of one of Sondheim's greatest works

To have seen this show three times in tryouts in Boston, then to see it on Broadway was such a privilege. An exquisite piece of work.

This is Sondheim's favorite score of his for a reason. It's absolutely brilliant.

This is arguably Sondheims best score ever written. By far my favorite Sondheim Musical. Thank you so much for posting this!

This is a wonderful musical! I'm so happy to finally see it in its entirety!
(I've only ever seen a clip of Someone In A Tree, which is mine - and Sondheim's - favorite song he's written!)

I've met John Weidman, who wrote the libretto for this play. He also did Assassins with Sondheim. He's a great guy.
