Hemingway is the most overrated writer in the history of literature. The only decent book he wrote was A Moveable Feast. F. Scott Fitzgerald introduced Hemingway to Max Perkins at Scribners getting Hemingway started and then Hem shit on Fitzgerald the rest of his life. No book Hemingway ever wrote can compare to The Great Gatsby. The Old Man in the Sea is something a third grader can read. Great literature is not read by third graders.

Since 1999 it has been brutally persecuted by the CCP in China. People are being killed, tortured, put into concentration camps and have organs harvested from live people, simply because of their belief. More than 3400 Falun Gong practitioners have died at the hands of CCP in the past 12 years.
Yeah, I just read Across the River and Into the Trees and it was disappointing. There were some funny bits, and a few startling truisms, but it is of far lower quality than his other works. If that had been the first Hemingway book I'd read, I don't think I'd have read another.
@Supertramp1966 I'm glad you liked it. And it is strong compared to the bulk of books out there. You just don't get the same kind of feeling you get from The Sun also Rises, or For Whom the Bell Tolls, or, indeed, The Old Man and the Sea. It was okay, but I wouldn't suggest it.
"I had gone to no such place but to the smoke of cafes and nights when the room whirled and you needed to look at the wall to make it stop, nights in bed, drunk, when you knew that that was all there was, and the strange excitement of waking and not knowing who it was with you, and the world so unreal in the dark and so exciting that you must resume again unknowing and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and not caring." -E.H., 1929 A Farewell To Arms
i saw this novel as a novel of life. you work hard to youre whole life to achieve something and when you finally get it people try to take it away. but in the end it was the journey
when someone comes to church for the first time, do we care what they wear? Be glad he is a new reader....he will spell the name once he is more familiar with the man. in my humble opinion.
I liked Hemingway when I was young, but really understand him now that I am older. I felt life was passing me by, and all I wanted to do was be where the action was....zoom, zoom.....; now, I savor every memory, and keep trying to accomplish what I could not seem to do while young. I finally get it....life is precious, especially the adventures we have, and some of the people who touch our lives....
@patwilsonart so true. sadly, us humnas live in the present and we must make our pasts and futures wonderul as they are all to have as the present is to quick o capture

I completely disagree. I felt it to be a strong novel, albeit not as good as his best...Don't look for flaws, and you will always be pleased.

@lionizingrome Man is always destroyed. That is life. Another is always born. Ideas travel along, carried by some to be passed on

The brilliance of this book is in the direct manner in which it tells the story. He doesn't try to dress it up with flowery language.

I agree, but I also think Hemingway has beautiful style.
