There's a lot to be said about analog vs. digital. I will take analog any day over digital. I have a Sony TC630 R to R and I run it through 2 Olson Electronics 12 watt tube amps I built as kits back in about 1964. (The amp kits sold for $19.95, with all 5 tubes back then. A similar kit now is well over $500. One lousy 6V6 output tube now costs $20)
Most of my music collection is on 12" vinyl, not CD's. What a difference in sound quality. The CD's sound so artificial when compared to vinyl.
Guys, my dad had some of these and if i can remember right, each side of the spool had 4 tracks... I think it could play 4X90 minutes per side. We had a Grundig player. Wow! this video has just brought back great memories.
Great video of a vintage reel-to-reel deck. I have an Akai 1730D.SS that I have used in my stereo setup for some years now. It is not solenoid control like your model is but it is 4 channel Stereo although I have only used it as two channel. Maybe I'll post a video of it.
Whoa... I remember in my experience when 90-minute Compact Cassettes were The Shit, when I got my first Fisher-Price tape recorder. (in 1989 at age 9; how sad is THAT? :P) Anyway, three hours per reel... Wow. o.o
The song is Zorba The Greek. Herb Alpert and the TJB also did a great rendition of this song. It was from an old 60s movie of the same name with Anthony Quinn.
Very cool, Spats! Somewhere, probably not gonna find them, but anyways, somewhere in all my stuff I have about 40 RTR tapes I will be glad to send you if I can ever find them...
Cool to find old tapes that were recorded back in the day.
Radio Shack sold (under the Realistic brand) some real quality stuff. The guy who recorded must've had a real high-end Realistic system with excellent frequency response.
Very cool!! I was given a few reels from a neighbor many years back to play on an old Webcor I fixed. I found something on those alright... one of the tapes was of his son when he was a child... his son died in the early 1980s, and my neighbor had no idea he had those recordings!
Please can you send mp3 from this tape of the song which begins at 1:20 and ends at 4:58? Please, I really like it! Regards!

I'm pretty sure that was the second version of Peter Gunn that Mancini recorded for the soundtrack of "Gunn" around '68.

o.o Holy shit. How many minutes were those three RTR's at 3 3/4"? O.O
JFD62780 2 years ago
It is 90 minutes per side @ 1800ft. So about 180 minutes per reel.
Truth is, I've only played through the first side and only half of the other of just this reel. I still have 2 more reel to do.

The second song is Peter Gun, the third is Hey Jude, and the forth is James Bond' 007 theme.
Sounds like a good instumental tape - fun stuff!

It's always fun to find and listen to homemade reel-to-reel tapes. Plus, they last almost forever! CD-Rs don't even last a decade!

These 3 reels were not even stored in the best of conditions either, and still sound near perfect with no dropouts.
Plus the sound quality of a reel to reel :)

Good stereo separation too. The camera picked it up well.

It did pick up well, but it sounds amazing in person. I could pick out every instrument and its location.

The tapes here sound nearly full frequency. I know this Akai can do either 19kHz to 21kHz, depending on the type of tape used, on 3 3/4ips.

It's a shame that Realistic deck got ruined by rust...

Whoever made this recording loved MOR music. I also enjoy going to thrift stores and finding homemade reel-to-reel recordings.
