I found myself laughing hysterically throughout this whole promo, which is odd considering nothing was THAT funny in the entire thing.....it was just something about the way hogan came across like he was legitimately high on coke and piper came across..well piper is always high on coke in his interviews. But piper + hogan in a promo= very very odd.
When Piper starts talking it looks like Hogan is riding the cowgirl if you know what I mean, then Piper grabs his hand and Hogan keeps pumping away, oooo...ooooing while Piper moves hand helping him spank the monkey. wtf
I know. it was so wierd to see them together. They were the best rivalry during the '80's. Their first match against harley race and Mr. Wonderful, they would barely tag each other.
Hogan's belt fit like a freakin GLOVE back then... Back when the highlight of my week was watching pro wrestling and feeling the power of Hulkamania Run Wild throughout my neighborhood!
@joeybrabham WWE HAS THE HOGAN '86 REPLICA BELT? I DIDNT SEE THAT ON THE WEBSITE....BUT THAT'S GOOD YOU GOT IT, NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE UP ON THAT CLASSIC BELT
Always thought back in the day that Roddy Piper could have been the Ric Flair of the WWF. Hogan was pushed a bit too much back then and I think Piper could have been as many time World Champion as either of those guys.
Can you imagine what would have happened if Vince ever put the belt on RP? I think it would have been amazing. It's a shame that he was over shadowed by Hogan and Warrior who lets face it have the same match every single time the wrestle.
@grillows19 Yeah, the fans would have destroyed the arena is what would have happened. Piper was already one of the most hated heels for his Piper's Pit coconut job on Snuka. If Vince had dared to take Hogan's title... The People's Title and put it on Piper he may have gotten the Rowdy Scott killed. The fans were that consumed by Hulkamania. Notice that in order to take the belt off Hogan they put the blame on a pair of twin referees and not one single person who could be targeted...
(continued) On top of that, Vince had the belt quickly pass from Andre to DiBiase to vacancy and made it appear that Hogan had a legit chance to win it back in the WM4 tournament, simply to make it popular for a Hogan-backed Macho Man to win and hold the title after Hogan and Andre eliminated one another. Vince may be a lot of things, but stupid is definitely not one of them.
Roddy Piper, the # 1 character of all time in the wrestling world. No one before or after could compete with his charisma. To bad this era is gone and will not be coming back.
@armatulo - Yea except for the fact that he was always a MIDCARDER unless he was placed with Hulk Hogan. I swear some of you Piper fans pat him on the back WAY to damn much. *MIDCARDER*
@86Stooy so drew carey is better? lol fool hogan worked his fuckin arse off for 14 years to become a success and a success he was jealousy gets u nowhere
@NJPlayer79 "In ring ability?" Oh God, not another smark. Piper's "In ring ability" to entertain the fans was legendary. He didn't need to be a spot monkey like many of today's wrestlers with ZERO personality.
@NJPlayer79 Speaking of Hogan, I've seen Japanese footage of him doing some technical wrestling, believe it or not. He's a lot better than he got cred for, he just didn't use it much because that's not what America wanted from him. Japan however, did.
@UrukTheRed Definitely...I'm not saying that he was Bret Hart or Shawn Michaels in the ring, but other than the match with Bret Hart at Wrestlemania, Piper was one of the worst "technical" wrestlers ever. And that's alright, it's all about entertaining and drawing money and Piper could do that.
i was 1 month and 4 days old when this aired for the first time lol. 24 years old now. ohhhh the memories. grew up watching wrestling during the golden age, and then into the monday night wars, and attitude era, oh us 80's babies were so lucky with the quality of tv we had in the 90's, not just wrestling. but NICKELODEON SNICK, TGIF with boy meets world, step by step, are you afraid of the dark, hey dude, all that. ohhh the list goes on, even music was sooo much better back then. poor kids today
Man, imagine the cash that would've poured in if Vince had used the Piper/Hogan team a little more, maybe even gave them the straps ff the Hart Foundation. That would've been a nice short program.
@Robohump Sounds more Irish to me. Then again, it didn't matter since most of his audience was American at the time, and even Canadians from Saskatchewan have funny sounding accents to us.
Anyone who saw them in 1984-1985 could not have ever imagined that these guys could be in the same building without beating the crap out of each other.
@MrFrenchHeritage hell yea, and Piper was fucking JACKED back then, his arms were huge. i mean they were no 24 inch pythons, but they were big for a dude his size.
If Vince would have run the 80's like he did the 90's, Hogan would have been a 10 time champ. The strap would have been moving to the likes of Andre, Dibiase, Perfect, Orndorff, and Piper. Hogan vs. Piper should have been WM I and WM VII should have been Flair vs. Hogan.
both of them are coked to the gills. You outght to see some of roddy's early coked up portland/pacific northwest interviews from the crows nest in the famous portland sports arena.
Piper deserved a World title run over Hogan during the "Hulkamania" era and never got it. Hogan always used all his political stroke to stay on top, even though fans at different times got SO bored with him - others should have beaten Hogan and had their careers improved too - guys like Savage, Rude, Hennig, DiBiase, Andre ( A LEGIT WIN) and Orndorff. But Piper most of all. But McMahon went with the Ultimate Buffoon to get a pin over Hogan. Poor.
I was about to disagree with you until...........you mentioned McMahon going with the Ultimate Warrior. You Sir, are correct. I agree 1000%. Piper SHOULD have gotten at least 1 title run during the Hulkamania era.
It is true that Warrior was an Arse. Bret and Hogan have both stated so in their books and the boys in the back at the time weren't too keen on Warrior.
And most people didn't get bored with Hogan until about 1990/91.
And I agree, Piper should have been World Champ but had to settle for WWF/E's "Silver Medal" of Championships - The IC strap.
but that title was always considered going to the best wrestler in the company at the time. The World title went to the guy who they thought could draw the most money and put people in the seats...but the IC Belt usually went to the best wrestler in the company at the time. Look who held it but never held a WWE world title...Rude, Piper, Steamboat, etc. Because you had bigger draws at the time with Warrior, Hogan, and Savage who guaranteed butts in the seats at events.
I agree Piper would of mad a great champion, especially around 85/86 but to say Hogan used his politics to stay on the top is stupid. Hogan was only on top because he could draw massive amounts of money and people still went wild for him, even in 92 he got the loudest cheers and even when he went to WCW he got pops over the top people. Hogan stayed on top because he was the mountain that carried it all, and think about it, from 84 to 90 he didn't always have the title.
@1980Triumph ...it's not stupid when it's at least partially accurate and this theory has been repeatedly substantiated by (yes many jealous, but still), many legit guys who had a legit beef to gripe about here - 'cause Hogan was gonna draw the money belt or no belt, true, all very true, but the recognition and reward of being acknowledged as one of the business' best with a world title win and run would have done wonders for a lot of guys and not have hurt Hogan's career at all - just his ego!
Think about it, from 84-90, Hogan didn't always have the Title. Macho had it for a year, and before then it was up for grabs. Hogan then lost it to Warrior. I agree that Piper would of made an awesome champion, a nice story arc around 85, where Piper had the belt for about 3 to 4 months would of been great. With that said Piper almost doesn't deserve it sense he wouldn't lose clean to Hogan or just about any other guy for that matter.
@1980Triumph....ok, but here's more truth: Hogan did plenty of politicking himself and refused to drop the belt and/or lose clean to many guys in that timeframe, too - I think the only reason he dropped it cleanly to Warrior in '90 was because he was pretty much shamed into doing so and somewhat dared to try and refuse to... in other words, he was really given no other choice, so he doesn't really deserve any pat on the back for WM-VI
come on man, you act as if Hogan is the ultimate bad guy. Again, in six years he dropped the belt twice and that is good enough for me. He was the most popular wrestler, tha fans wanted it, he recieved the loudest cheers, watch WM7 and he got the loudest cheers. Hogan was the top so he had the title. If anything you should hate the push WWE gave Cena and Triple H, talk about people who don't deserve the title
@1980Triumph bullshit, Cena deserves it as much as Hogan. Bottom line is this "do you sell". That's all I care about from a business perspective. I don't give a fuck if you do 200 moves or if you do 2, if you sell tix and get a reaction (and believe it or not, Cena WANTS your boos coz he knows you'll watch no matter what and it makes for better TV and makes the kids cheer louder). Cena is much better technically than he lets on and doesn't have to be cheesey, he choses to be.
@1980Triumph really? Because those old videos of the Manias sound a LOT like Cena's fanbase. hogan had mostly fans to, don't let nostalgia get to you.
Dude, there is no doubt Cena is big, but to compare him to Hogan is not much. Everything about Cena's sucess is built on Hogan's foundation, a foundation that no one has exceeded yet.
Would Cena draw 90 thousand plus for him vs anyone...no
Would Cena grace the cover of Sports Illustrated
Would Cena have the merchandising Hogan had...no, trust that, go back and look at how many products that slapped Hogan on, from then till now.
@1980Triumph u r so right, i mean look at the 80s u had peeps like mr t who were the face of the 80s n hogan was one of the faces of the 80s not juss the face of wrestling but tht decade in total, where as john cena today is just the face of wrestling if u get what im sayin.
I was thinking last night how Roddy piper would have went over in both world class and memphis. I think he would have ended up a great face in texas with the von erichs and a great heel in Memphis mocking lawler.
His parents are from Scotland, he wears his clan's kilt, he plays bagpipes, etc... Minus the accent he's about as close to the stereotypical Scotsman as you're gonna get.
good for him am scottish do a play bagpipes nooooooooo do a wear my clan kilt nooooooooo except scotland games does 90% of scotland do these things no man a stereotype scotman these days are white tracksuits and burbery caps sad I know! but true
@murrayrrfc He is Scottish ancestry raised in Saskatchewan. But I know what ya mean, being from Canada you can notice the accent is obviously absent lol!
I agree he outdoes Hogan in this promo & didn't even say much as Hogan while Hogan yapped away. Also i prefer Piper as a BAD guy. Although he was a good guy here..it just doesn't fit his persona. I prefer him beating Hogan's brains out lol.
wow! i remember when they did a promo for a tag match in peoria, and hogan called piper rowdy roddy poppy, piper brother! hilarious. the ultimate tag team of the 80s
I found myself laughing hysterically throughout this whole promo, which is odd considering nothing was THAT funny in the entire thing.....it was just something about the way hogan came across like he was legitimately high on coke and piper came across..well piper is always high on coke in his interviews. His parents are from Scotland, he wears his clan's kilt, he plays bagpipes, etc... Minus the accent he's about as close to the stereotypical Scotsman as you're gonna get.
Makonu2 2 years ago
good for him am scottish do a play bagpipes nooooooooo do a wear my clan kilt nooooooooo except scotland games does 90% of scotland do these things no man a stereotype scotman these days are white tracksuits and burbery caps sad I know! but true

Piper is Canadian with Scottish/Irish decent.
mjurney 2 years ago
@murrayrrfc Probably because Piper is from CANADA. His relatives are Scottish so he took that as his gimmick.

@murrayrrfc Hi heritage is scottish. He wasn't a Scottish citizen.

@murrayrrfc He's Canadian.
wwerulestna 1 year ago
That's because he lived most of the time in Canada.
Konni1969 1 year ago
@murrayrrfc He is Scottish ancestry raised in Saskatchewan. But I know what ya mean, being from Canada you can notice the accent is obviously absent lol!

Pipper is a legend in this promo He so outdoes Hogan in this interview far as mic skills It's a travesty that he was never world champion
ElectroX24 3 years ago 3
I agree he outdoes Hogan in this promo & didn't even say much as Hogan while Hogan yapped away. Also i prefer Piper as a BAD guy. Although he was a good guy here..it just doesn't fit his persona. I prefer him beating Hogan's brains out lol.

The match they are talking about I saw. It was the possible inspiration for the Survivor Series. I wish someone would post it.
