Burglars don't break into peoples' homes with guns in this country, but they would if they knew there was a chance the person inside the house had one, which would mean that somebody will get shot. We don't want to start that kind of arms race. America doesn't exactly make a good case for the efficacy of personal ownership of firearms. Gun owners get shot every day.

Point is if there is an arms race then at least there will be some balance to things before chaos returns. People have a right to weild arms not just guns. @Peter4101 Um... I can try... the main thing I guess is that we believe we're stronger in groups, so we don't put the short term rights of the individual before the long term rights of the society. The people who lost property during the riots, who can't cover it with their insurance, we're going to look after them, and pay for their losses as a country, and that will cost us a lot less than if we give everyone guns then have to arm all our police then have issues with shootings all the time.

Our government here is proposing cuts to our national health service, and they're having to back down on so many of them, because we WANT to pay for a good health service for everyone. I don't want -me- to be well off. I want my society to be well off.

But basically, we want to set our own standards of our society, where we don't lower them just because we're facing a threat or because some individual has lowered their own, this with these riots... we accept that sometimes we're going to suffer losses, and we just deal with it, but not by changing who we are. I've probably seen armed police once or twice in my life. Most aren't armed, because we don't shoot each other.

We don't always win, we have lost some ground, particularly after 9/11 due to US influencing our politicians (or completely buying them, like Blair!) but we don't like this

@Peter4101 The USA in moving towards collapse, absolutely, but you may get by without civil war as the federal government disintegrates and leaves the states in charge of themselves, creating new currencies (already seen in some places) and perhaps new unions with likeminded states. This will be painful, all over the world, but the result will be a much better place to live. You'll even get greater choice of politicians out of it! No more two party dictatorship like the former united states.

Of course, the US is the most far reaching empire ever, so it's not going to be an exact repeat, and it will coincide with the rise of China, but the more you study previous collapses, from the USSR or the British right back to the Romans and even before, the more you see the pattern and recognise what's happening right now. We live in interesting times! History's happening!

@Peter4101 No, there's still excellent stuff being churned out there, the difference is that over time, inaccuracies in pieces that are written get discovered, flawed historical records can be dropped, and as more people study it, understanding grows, not to mention declassification/leaking of relevant documents (eg pentagon papers). We have more info out there now than ever, sifting through it takes time, but it does surface. A solid understanding is within the reach of a disciplined mind :-)

I worked in a school here in the caribbean and notice a change in students behaviour post 1995. I find that youths today are just downright different, wilder and less well trained and groomed. People for millenia have been poor and our parents were way poorer than we are today but apart from the civil rights movements and military coups, people were much more orderly
