  • This works, it helps stop nervious peeing as well, the only problem is trying to get idiots who come to your house to do what you ask them, I have that problem with my son and his girl friend every time they come over.. so I have taken to putting my Boston in the bed room until I drill it in their heads with each visit, because if I don't, soon as they walk in they start with the high pitch baby talk and petting.. then when I am sure they get it, I let the dog out..

  • i can't get my dog to behave outside of the house. Inside he does not always listen at first command but without any other stimuli he eventually caves. I'm at the point where I basically have to keep him on a leash unless he's in his crate. I wanted to avoid having to pay for outside training but it seems like my only recourse.

  • My dog has always suffered from separation anxiety and I tried the ignore thing for years, yet she still scratched at the door when I left and cried excitedly when I got home. Now instead of ignoring her, I sit on the ground with her and pet her calmly while saying shh. This calms her down and stops her from crying and her separation anxiety, although is still there, is much less. I don't think everyone should have a strict code of rules for every dog. Each dog is different and needs to be

  • what if your dog isn't paying attention to you? For example, I can't just ignore my dog on a walk when he is too excited by a dog across the street to even notice I'm ignoring him.

  • i would honestly hate for my dog to calm down, then she would be boring.

  • A dog wagging it tail a the way to the hips is happiness. If the dog is jumping, running and continually barking that over excitement. Ignoring your would be a case by case basis. I've actually had dogs calm dog after you pet them.

  • what's the full body message for a dog about then?

  • I do basically the same thing as this. When my dog jumps up or is excited, I ask for a "sit" and when she is sitting calmly, I pet her. If she stands up while I am petting her, I immediately ignore her, crossing my arms and looking away. I ask for a "sit" again and repeat this until she is completely calm. This usually only takes 1 or 2 tries if you are starting out, and is very effective.

  • 138,597 videos wow you need a life

  • @Kimball231 it's Expert Village, not one person.

  • What do you do if your dog goes crazy every time u do go to pet him? I let him out of his kennel after being going he runs around like crazy I did like I've read every where and saw here to ignore them until he calms down but then when I go to pet him he flares back up. Do I just keep trying until he stops?

  • if you do that, then ur dog will hate you for life, you shuold let it be excited becuase that how they are,you should alway give them love and care for them because then they will show it back to you .......

  • @luces11 no, letting a dog be crazy and excited when he sees you causes anxiety. There is a difference between happiness and excitement. A HAPPY dog is a dog with it's tail hanging gently down, not between the legs, but not high up and wagging slowly. An EXCITED or ANXIOUS dog is a dog that has its tail wagging non-stop, is begging for attention, or jumps up. There is a major difference between an excited dog and a happy dog. My dog loves me because I love her and praise her calmly.

  • expert village? you look green son.

  • in my opinion that is the worst advice i have ever hured to ignore your best friend and and to not play with him

  • @tiornon you are acting humanly emotionally , dogs work in dog ways

  • ONE OF MY DOG MOLLY KILLED AND ATE SOME OF MY MOM'S BIRDS HOW CAN I HELP HER FROM DOING IT AGAIN?????????????

  • @1mayleen tell her no then let her near the birds and if she doesn't attack them give her a treat and say good girl keep doing it, but if she does attack them tell her no then put her lets say kitchen then after ten mins let her out keep repeating this so that shell get that birds = good attacking birds = bad

  • Holy smokes the only EV video that was even remotely close to a correct answer!

  • Why does everyone from Expert Village stroke their dog so much ?

  • this is crap these dog training tips do not work my dog is excited as soon as he sees me i ignore him evry time and his behavior has not changed it is not true that dogs in full body wag are not happy dogs in full body wag are absolutely happy as larry if you study dogs behavior in the wild this full body wag is there way of greeting there pack leader.

  • Great tips... but I could have sat down and said that and made a video about it, and I doubt very much it would be nearing 100,000 hits. What I need to see is him making and anxious/excited dog calm. That would get a thumbs up!

  • that didnt help at all...

  • This is the perfect basic adivce for this situation. First step is to ignore unwanted behavoir, second would be to correct it if necessary.

I do find it concerning, however, that this guy's credentials are not mentioned (10 dogs, really? How does that make him an expert?), and that the dog in this video is well behaved - not demonstrating what the video discusses. (Also, why pat him for licking his junk while you're trying to video?)

  • how its possible to handle an excited dog at a dog show?

Its no way to ignore him/her.

  • thanks, pretty helpful! my dog is suuuper annoyingly excited and he gets crazy to the piont where he is jumping up and knocking things over.

  • fuck you you stubit mother fucker

  • It seems weird that when he rewarded the good dog with petting and stuff, the dog just ignored him and went about licking his nuts. What I normally do when I come home and the dog greets me, he of course wants to jump up, but I basically ignore him or say "Hang on, Buster" until I get my purse put away and jacket hung up. Then I go sit down on my couch, where he'll hop up to lick my face with his tail wagging. I like a little of that anxious behavior, though. Just when I come home :D

  • This advice works. Nothing is more annoying than constantly excited dog or human.

  • 0:01 - 00:30 the dogs looks sad... probably becuz expert village doesnt care about dogs they only care about the green stuff

  • Are you kidding? There is nothing like coming home to a HAPPY dog! I should ignor him when he greets me in an excited way? NO WAY!

  • @mylulac If you are happy with your dog's behavior, then that's fine, but for most people, this behavior is unwanted. And whether you like it or not, unstable beahvior can actually lead to bigger issues.

  • If my dog is really exited and spinning in circles i just smile and look at my dog and dont say anything to her

  • @proskillz89 Looking at her is still giving her attention, and dogs can read facial cues; she knows you're smiling whether you say anything to her or not.

  • All of your videos have helped me with my pitbull's training. She's now 3 monts old and she's calm and obedient already. These are great tips and they work!!!! (BTW she looks like the dog in this video, aaww) THANK YOU!

  • what breed is that?

  • Useless

  • Okay wroung sorry but true!

  • This guy is a dumbass. his animals must me miserable. Fuck you asshole

  • STOP HUMANIZING YOUR PETS PEOPLE!! Read Cesar Milan's books. Follow his principles so you AND your dog can be stable, healthy, and coexist as human and ANIMAL.

  • What he fails to say + a lot of comments have not said (or the ones I've read) is that exercise (mental and physical) also contributes to this anxiousness. If the dog has been properly exercised (mentally not just physically) it will not be anxious.

Not to mention some working dog + similar breeds need your leadership. They want you to tell them to do something not ignore them. ie tell the dog to get the ball (give it a task).

  • THANKS!

  • I have a problem and I hope someone will help me;; When I ignore my dog he starts biting me very hard.. He is just a puppy but what can I do? it really hurts but when I don't ignore him he jumps on me, makes me dirty and scratches me somewhere... Please reply! Thanks!

  • Yelp in a high pitched voice if he mouths you. Don't let him get to the point where he's biting. Leash him, make him sit, and if you have to, make a claw shape with your hand and "bite" him on the back of his neck until he lays down. Not hurtful, just firm. This tells him that you are the boss. Take him on long walks to tire him out so he doesn't have the energy to go nuts.

  • @FlowerWhiskers23 hi now wat u r facing is very common wid d puppies as this is d stage of teething so they have this habit of biting things as well as u so wat u can do is ,pinch him near his ear and at the same time in a stern voice say "NO" when ever he tries to bite u or any other thing ,very soon ur puppy will obey to ur command .secondly u can buy him some calcium bones which he can chew to get rid of his teething irritation . hope it'll help u

  • @loveall70 thanks! It's helping me! x]]

  • How do you stop your puppy pissing off out the door when somone knocks or passes

  • @zuppypup I agree

  • If you show a dog affection you are rewarding its current behaviour - if it is jumping around and excited and you pet it, you are reinforcing that jumping around and being excited state of mind. As soon as a dog is calm, give it love and affection, but you should ignore an overexcited dog.

  • exactly, turn your back even, then to the dog rude behavior is clearly not allowed

  • @dailymuffin I've done almost all tips from Ryan and they've worked perfectly with my pitbull puppy, she's now 3 1/2 months old. She's already a calm and obedient dog (still in training though). THANK YOU!!!

  • @dailymuffin Found a fun exercising product called the Bike-a-Buddy. This bicycle attachment exercises one to two dogs. Check it out at afitdog.com

  • huh?

  • I ignore my dog and she rebels.

  • ok....so thats all good, but what if your dog gets anxious around other dogs? like when i take my Border Collie to the beach he goes nuts, barking, pulling, ext, ext. uncontrollable. and only when he see's other dogs....how do you fix that without risking a full on, all in, dog fight between my dog and a strangers?

  • u know, i stopped that behavior by making my dog meet other dogs more often.. they get anxious about things they rarely see or are curious about.. just let him make some friends..

be careful though .. he can get into a fight.

  • you need to hire a professional

  • our 9 month old gsd has leash aggression. he will lunge, growl, & bark at dogs on walks. but he actually loves playing with dogs. we train him to ignore the other dog on walks using treats. we tell him to "leave it". as soon as he looks at us, we treat/praise him like he just saved a child. we do this walking away from the other dog. every time he acts out we say "no" or "leave it". the point is: its better to ignore the dog and look at my owner cause i will get treats!

    hope that helps.

  • we tried distractions. treats that any other dog would go nuts for, he ignored.

every time he started going nuts over a passing dog we would stop & try to get his attention. but he would not look at us or even move his ears to listen to us. ears, eyes & nose are always pointed directly at the other dog. we even tried to physically open his mouth to put the treat in it, but he didnt flinch or even acknowledge our existence.

now we just keep walking. ignore him & the other dog. leading by example

  • @dehbee

one thought: if your dog is not allowed to look at the other dog - you break the conversation. The other dog will most likely come too close if not on leash, therefore making your dog react sooner or later. Better to click your dog for looking at the oncoming dog and giving him the treat is breaking the eye contact. This gives your dog the reprieve it needs not to get over excited.

  • @dehbee

2nd part The yanking and yelling of most owners cements the problem and ends in full blown aggression.

Tell your dog in a firm friendly voice that he's doing great. Accept the acting out as a stress reaction and keep on walking, NO hesitation. Dogs do not realize that your "no" is directed at their behaviour. To them, it's directed at the other dog. Therefore it becomes the enemy, because it makes you angry!!

  • my dog is as intelligent as hell the first day i got it it never piss on the floor it just goes back into its cage and pisses on the newspapers and its only 3 months old wow right?

  • That is not why he does it.

  • yeah sme here

my dog is so big he knocks me over lol

    buh i love him :D

  • If you are calm [internally as well as externally] your dog learns to be calm. Most people teach their dogs to become excited by touching them when they are excited. Calmness is rewarded by touch. Dogs soon learn how to be calm in this way. And yes structured exercise is one of the best ways.

At home, ear massage can also help with some dogs as they have a lot of accupressure points in their ears.

  • exercising your dog is the best way to get rid of excitement. just have him worn out from a walk or a run and he'll be too tired to get wound up and excited

  • u know wat the problem is with u so called experts u say to do this with ur dog and dnt do that with ur dog bt u guys never actually say hw to punish them or dicipline them so wen our dogs do smething bad like piss on the floor all u guys say is i dnt believe u shuld put his nose init and smack them on the nose well wat the hell r u supposed 2 do then?PLEASE REPLY!

  • lol piss on the floor , i know what u mean tho , they r like ignore the dog but what do you do when it lays a steaming chudd on your bed lmao!!!

  • walk the dog 5 times a day and try crate training

  • Please visit the website of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior at avsabonline[dot]org if you need help with your pet's behavior problems or if you are looking for pet behavior articles.

  • cool thanks, my dog pulls like mad when there is another dog

  • exitement isnt always anxiousness it can just be underexercised or a happy and boisterous dog, depends what its doing

  • my dog is too lazy (labrador retriever) , if i get home from school or from some friends, she just wags her tail lying down on the couch.. and then just continues snoring, lol

  • Do not massage your dog while he is licking his bollocks.

  • i tryed everything but my dog dont stop

  • have you tried acting as though your dog doesn't exist until it settles? Some dogs will take negative attention over no attention at all, so the "correction" method doesn't work. It might take your dog 30 seconds to calm down or it might take ten or fifteen minutes or longer. The important thing is attention = reward, so do not reward any behavior you don't want your dog to repeat. Also, some dogs calm down when given a command so you might try that (a command she's really good at).

  • @mapleleafmenace: Thank you! Finally some common sense!

  • You're more than welcome. :)

  • expert village isnt helping me very well, they talk about things that we already know, i have a 10 week old beagle, sturdy little guy whos always barking, biting jumping at me and biting my calfs when im near him and i need some help with that and ur saying things that we already know that dont work with small dogs, ignoring is a good way but we already know that.

  • Have you tried seeing if Cesar Millan has any tips? I'm sure you can find something, either on Youtube or Google...

  • nah, i watched the dog whisperer and the only thing that works is something my dog is already trained to do, the tug of the leesh...at the end of my leesh is a better show, that TSSK sound doesnt work. but at the end of my leesh is just better :P

  • i give my dog cheetos steak buritos and when i come home shes rlly happy so i wrestle with her and hug her and stuf...my dog isnt a brainwashed faggot she gets to live her life freely noobs

  • exactly, just like mine! although i dont let her have chocolate.

  • okay, first of all, I can't hear what you're saying. So I understood nothing. Maybe people that speak English natively can understand, but the rest of us can't.

  • English is my second language and I can understand it easily. There's also subtitles there, though. Why don't you just read those? :s

  • What about a dog that is overly excited to see another dog when walking? What exactly do you do then when you can't ignore the dog?

  • A head collar works the best .. a "Halti" is the best brand. A head collar works the same as a bridle on a horse. You can quickly stop fixations without hurting the dog. For example alot of people use choke collars for this they say it " seems like the bite of a dog" However, if you have a dog who is afraid of other dogs this can lead to more problems. Using the head collar u can change the mind set of a dog through simple tugs at the leash.

  • the head collar is the best method because it won't hurt a dogs neck when you yank it with a choke chain. Use it to stop the dog from fixating (with small tugs on the leash) When the dog doesn't bark then use big rewards..lots of praise and maybe a treat (OF REAL MEAT) < Treats you buy at stores are not only bad for your dog but they don't taste as good. cut up some RAW chicken or hot dogs. That will really help the dog stay motivated.

  • What will i do if my dog jumps, barks and bites when i get home.If i ignore her,she just keeps barking even if i say "quiet" in a stern voice.Help!

  • Like humans, everything dogs are different. Just try different things to calm him down. I always pet my dog when i come home to show him respect. He doesn't jump around like a freak at all.

  • D0zer92, get a crate put the crate in the room you sleep in and put the dog in it when it is time for sleepl dogs are pack animals, if you leave him all alone he will keep barking, they like to be where the pack is

  • I got puppy 1.5 months old got it yesterday I let him sleeps on Balcony (no danger at all) with puppy house and towels in it.I found it very confortable but dog get up when he want and start barking like crazy.

Plz some1 help I cant sl33p i got it yesterday!

The thing is dog want full human attention and I must sl33p sometimes!!!

When i go to bed he start barking and waking up neighboors!

This is very faked up sittuation!

  • Dogs like to hear you when theyre sleeping. If they're next to you or in the same room they can hear you breathing. It comforts them and makes them feel safe. Keep the dog in the same room as you. They may wine for the first few days but after that they will calm right down. Also it's a good idea to let them sleep with you. Puppies often go potty about 20 mins after they eat so plan sleeping time with that. A puppy is alot like a child and likes to feel safe.

  • Thank you very much for these videos. I've found them extremely helpful.

  • Comment removed

  • but when you just ignore your dog its like it loses intrest in you..thats not goood

  • You only ignore your dog til he calms down. This way you are showing that excitement = no attention. Calm = attention. Dogs learn by positive association.

  • My dog jumps on me--I have to grab her collar and choke her down and even then she only sits until I release her.

  • Your dog thinks she is the alpha. The alpha demands attention. If you want to show that you are the alpha then keep pushing her away until she is calm, this can take upto 15mins so be patient. When she is calm then give heaps of hugs! :-)

  • I must disagree. I have been born in a house with 14 dogs. I have lived with dogs for 25 years. They are excited to see you back home. Just give them a treat from your pocket. (Keep a box of them in your car if you dont want them in your pocket all day). Watch wild life vids when the pups are left in the den when the pack hunts and returns. They expect to be treated with food. Let me also add that there is no bad time to give your dog a hug.

  • Interesting. Ya, I'm not sure I agree it has NOTHING to do with being excited....

Also, if you've been doing such a good job ignoring them, why do you say you're dogs are still VERY anxious when you get home... shouldn't they have learned by now?

  • You got me wrong. I was saying that you should not ignore them. Just let them know that you are happy to see them too. Give em a treat and a hug. Trust me that they will be calm pretty soon. People are trying to treat dogs like it is some machine that you tune. You have to realize that they are emotional beings who live is packs (Us - in case of pets). What we also have to understand that they are unique individuals like us.

  • When dogs jump up to you when you have been away for some time, they are happy to see you home. Why? Because they tend to see you as their "child" who got out on their own without them to keep an eye on you. When you return home, he jumps up (dominance), greets, and is happy you're alright. Petting, cuddling, talking and such at that time, lets the dog know you like what he's doing, so he will do it the next time, and the next time..

  • Let me ask you a question ScropBiatch. Do you slip out of the house without your dog/bitch noticing? The very fact that you decide that your pet is not coming with you on your excursion lets him/her know that he/she is not the alpha. Hence he/she will not think that you are a child. You need to understand that only the alpha decides on where which pack member goes/does not.

  • My dog always knows when I'm leaving, he can always see me, but I don't make a big fuss out of it when I leave, and I don't make a big fuss out of it when I come home. I taught him it's completely normal for me to come and go as I please. He doesn't bark and/or jump, just wags his tail. My mother in law makes it a very big deal to her dog when she leaves (and comes back), and her dog keeps barking. When back, he jumps up to her, barks and tries it with us too. But, he's the boss in her house..

  • I guess your mother in law has to make sure that she makes herself the alpha. The best way is when you feed him. Make sure that the food is placed in the usual place and make him sit before he gets to eat. If he does not do that, remove the bowl. He will learn that he has to listen to you to get his meal. That is the best way to show him who is boss.

  • Dog's aren't like that by themselves, it's all about how you raise the dog. She can't eat whenever she wants, you have to tell the limits. You should learn more about dogs. You have to take responsibility!

  • Im pretty sure ScorpBiatch knows that. But I disagree with her, when a dog jumps at you when you come back home, it acts like it used to with his/her mother, or like dogs do to the leader, so it doesn't show dominance.. But the way they jump around and bark can scare or annoy your quests and isn't classified as a good manner..

But since you are very experienced with dogs, you live with them the way it's fine with you and your dogs. :)

  • wHY NOT USE A ECITED OUT OF CONTROL DOG RATHER THAN A SLEEPER?

    HIDING SOMETHING?

  • quite bad mouthing all there videos...u r a douche!!!

  • what ever i do it will become hiper again

  • I work with all sorts of dogs and puppies at the SPCA. Obviously, in the morning when I first go in to see them they all go nuts. I let one out, it jumps and cries but I just sit there NO EYE CONTACT, NO TALKING to dog. I gently push them away from me when they get too close. Within a few minutes the dog is calm and sitting peacefully on the floor. They learn very fast when you use their own language. Body language

  • I agree.

if the dog is excited when you come home, and you give him the attention hes asking for, you will show the dog that hes in control and dominating you.

not a very wise thing to do

  • Help: My dog wont stop his axiousness i try to push him away and he runs back and licks me. Im in desperate need of help

    P.m me pleeeease

  • something that MIGHT help, xXcharmanderXs. First train him to sit or lay down. When he's excited and comes to you for affection, FIRST get him to sit THEN reward him by petting or whatever it is you do. Reward your dog when he does something you like, like sitting calmly or laying down. To try to "comfort" your dog by petting when he's anxious just rewards the very behaviour you're trying to eliminate.

I KNOW I'm on the right track with my advice, consult with others for more details.

  • i have tried everything but my dog won't calm down. he's a pug/lab mix and every time i let him in or i go outside he'll go crazy and he will start to jump all over my other 2 dogs and im worried that he'll hurt them cause they are getting old.He starts to pant and shake his body all around and it really gets on my nerves!

  • dogluver, it sounds like your dog suffers from a bit of anxiety from not knowing what to do as well as having a lot of excess energy. Your dog may also be slightly dominate. Some time alone with you where he can RUN might help, as well as heel training. Having him exercise on a treadmill, if you have one, might help him blow off some steam.

I'd try exercise first, then some basic commands, heel training etc, so the dog knows what's expected which might calm him.

    IMHO btw.

  • exercise is a HUGE part for dogs. Try to find a place were you can let him run OFF LEASH < that's a huge gift you can give a dog.Take him on a walk one on one in the middle of the woods. You can never walk a dog enough to burn off that energy. Try riding a bike with him running with you or a treadmill is very helpful. It's also important that you walk your dog ON HEEL It will tire them out mentally.

  • i have tried sitting my dog down and make him understand, but once i turn away..he gots all hyper again.

I'll try the ignoring thing :).

  • thanks this helped me controll my dog

  • like Cesar Millan says:

    no touch

    no talk

    no eye contact

    it works!

  • that dude is a freakin saint

  • My Grandma And Grandpa Say That They Will Take There Dog Andy Back To The Pound Next Fall If He Is Not Calm I'am Trying To Trian Him But I'am Not Over At There House 24-7 Plus I'am 11 And I Have a Puppy (Brian) Who I'am Trying To Train To Please Can You Help Me

  • thanks for posting this. unlike these ass holes, i actually tried it and found that its worked. keep it up!
