  • For some eople, in some cases 4 hrs is enough ey...

  • I'm just gonna say that Levrone has said that he basically gained muscle by walking around at the gym:D

  • I dont know why people say you dont look like you lift, in my opinion you look like you lift taking into consideration your age, when i was your age i definitely didnt have that much size.

  • are you gunna get shredded? lol

  • I think the phrase, "it works for me" is fine when discussing what one has done to reach his or her own goal. To me the phrase may cover more than just the process, it also covers the situation one is in. For example one may say they have scheduling restraints or budget restraints, so one may say,"I know this isn't the optimal way to lose weight or gain muscle, but do to the circumstances at this time, this works for me". Just a thought, not hatin, just discussing.

  • /watch?v=2rQ9FWa85No&list=UUpJzlyBdPgGrArwn6Ov6MaA&index=8&feature=plcp 4:05 ''its working for me'' trololol.

  • You're a legend, I agree with almost everything you say, and you look like you're making progress in the gym in your recent back video, congrats man

  • I feel you man! It is a far too common logical fallacy, "Appeal to Tradition". By that same bro logic you can almost say, you shouldn't listen to anyone who isn't Mr. Olympia.

  • Great video man, total respect for you.

  • @killernacho17 Thanks.

  • What are your thoughts on weight gainer proteine powder as opposed to normal whey?

Also, found your channel when Twinmuscleworkout were responding to you, so its not all bad. You have like the most informative vids on youtube, but i think you could emphasize more when some workout/diet tip is for everyone and when its just for bodybuilders or when its just for ppl looking for strength and not size.

  • @bouncygangsta yes ian, PLEASE do something for athletes!

  • Ian, I guess the video is more about bodybuilding instead of religion so I will not chat with you about it until you make a video on religion. I'm a fellow atheist but I was wondering some things that you ponder. It's kind of pointless on a video about bodybuilding though, the religion chat could go on for eternity probably. Anyway, take care man. Talk to you on next vid.

  • I know you introduce this video as the reasons why the phrase need be eliminated completely, but do you really feel it should be eliminated completely from vocabulary or that there are some factors one may think about when they pose advice and how they phrase such advice?

  • Hey Ian, could you make a short video talking about high fructose corn syrup?

  • 8:55

Another example: If you suffer from cancer... would you see a doctor or would you ask advice from an ex-cancer patient ?

    Good video!

  • hey Ian if you need a business partner or anyone to invest in your future supplement company let me know lol. No seriously, the information you provide on your videos are great.

  • Your example in the first few minutes is flawed slightly as it does not apply to everyone. Obviously the owner of a supplement company is going to bullshit anyone they can, reason? Money.

Citing Pro bodybuilders as examples is also frowned upon as they are all on steroids. And Science is pretty much the best guess yet and not all of it is ultimate fact especially when it comes to nutrition and what is most efficient in the gym.

That is why you get people saying "it works for me"

  • @XMarkusMaximusX Science is not a guess. A guess is the complete opposite of science. And yes, it is "ultimate fact".

  • @LiftingForLife Science by defintion is actually "The Best Guess Yet." ESPECIALLY when it comes to nutrition and the best ways to build muscle.

ANY Scientist will tell you Science is a guess or to put it contextually a "theory" supported by attributed evidence gained from a series of "fair tests."

Taking it as "ultimate fact" is a trait of pure arrogance like you said in your video yourself. Evidence points to but does not ultimately confirm..why do you think the justice system is so flawed?

  • @LiftingForLife I believe he is referring to the fact that in the realm of nutrition, many studies support contradicting hypotheses in that community, in which case such studies are not necessarily "ultimate fact" and the difficulty in applying such studies to the whole populace (even general) due to variability of bodies.

  • @Tettsure "many studies support contradicting hypotheses in that community"

    Really?

  • amazing video

  • @serpakovski Thank you.

  • why cant you like this video?

  • @mrteddy0014 I disabled rating to keep the trolls at bay.

  • anyways:

cant find any truth on sleep and how much is needed. i get 5-6 hours and ppl give me hell.

but i think it's fine i need some vidication here. also alchol and this whole estrogen release myth, or is it fact. Ian cover these if you find time.

  • I would hate to get into an arguement with you haha

  • @RandomVidz888 Yeah, most people that do that end up regretting it.

  • your pretty knowledgeable about the science behind weight lifting and diet. how old are you?

  • @sxearon 18

  • @LiftingForLife cool man. is it possible to hinder muscle gains by smoking cannabis? even if it is smoked out of a well percolated water pipe aka a bong

  • @sxearon I'm not a fan of any drugs, but moderation is key.

  • @LiftingForLife that is true.

  • @LiftingForLife 18?? that must be your first year in university then yeah?

  • @SnapCity1 No, second.

  • @LiftingForLife ohh dang, 18 is the normal age here for first years, I guess your ahead of the game.

  • @SnapCity1 Yeah I skipped a grade back in middle school.

  • Hopefully I'm not alone in my request, but can we have some atheism videos, I find your succinctness to be impeccable when it comes to videos on lifting. Perhaps in on another channel or somewhere on yours.

  • Well i guess if it works for you , it works for you . They're not saying go do it you know , some factors actually count in body composition .

  • hey man im an underwear model an i have built up a great physique naturally. ive gotten by pretty much on broscience but your info is really spot on an puts things in perspective. big fan! check out my videos!

  • LOL at people turning this into a religious argument. He simply used it as a comparison, geez. Good video.

  • Very well done. Your finest 10 plus minutes yet.

  • and good video BTW. I really hate how people assume that a ripped dudes automatically knows everything about working out.

  • Ian, have you ever told an theist that absence of evidence doesn't prove the existence of god, when they ask you if you can prove if God Exists? Absence of evidence is absence of evidence. BTW, when comparing broscience to religion, were u saying that religion isn't the most efficient way to live out a life?

  • @MmaNcovers I don't understand your first question.

On your second point... I think religion makes many people happier, but it is still verifiably false and as such is not a good basis for one's life.

  • @LiftingForLife In reference to my first question, I was wondering if you've debated with theists, and told them that they can't prove the existence of God. Upon doing so, they usually reply with, "well you can't prove that God Doesn't exist." They feel as if the inability to disprove god's existence is evidence that God exists. But i was saying the only thing absence of evidence is, is absence of evidence. yes religion can be good, but also very bad, especially in other countries.

  • @LiftingForLife The christians in my life are the most judgmental people I've ever met. Negative judgments about people. Things that their bible says not to do but they pick and choose what they want to follow out of it then preach the parts they personally want to preach, ignoring the hypocritical things that they do.

  • @LiftingForLife possibly the dumbest comment you have ever made, and that's a tough thing for me to say, not that i am religious, but by saying verifiable you are saying that religion from animism to Hinduism has been disproven.

  • @UpalKashey The dumbest comment I have ever made? Yeah... no. If there was some religion that was NOT verifiably false I would probably follow it.

  • @LiftingForLife are you making the claim that you are 100% objective at all costs, and all instances? hell even Rand couldn't make that claim.

  • @UpalKashey I don't understand the question.

  • @LiftingForLife

you said: If there was some religion that was NOT verifiably false I would probably follow it.

your statement suggests that you only follow objective reasoning, so i am asking you are you 100% objective? because the issue here is what happens when something cannot be proven or disproven entirely, do you follow it to the best of your ability?

  • @UpalKashey If something is neither proven nor unproven I assume it is false by default.

  • @LiftingForLife that's just a subjective view. you can't assume something is false because it might or might not be. That would mean before a theory is proven correct it is instantly false according to this perspective. You then have to take into account that if something as simple as gravity can not be proven at the said moment then it would be deemed false by your logic, that's incorrect. do you understand what i am getting at.

if not it's all good. thumbs up vid regardless

  • @LiftingForLife Heres a funny thought for you bro, Compared to jesus, arent you pretty much an ALPHA BEAST. i mean the guy didnt look like he could bench 80 pounds. Anyway, i hope your not letting the haters get to you, they cant help that they were born without brains, they really cant!

  • @LiftingForLife actually atheism does originally mean the belief that there is no god. Without Deity. but regardless...

  • @LiftingForLife actually atheism does originally mean the belief that there is no god. Without Deity. but regardless...

    thumbs up, good vid

  • @LiftingForLife The existance of a God is verifiably false???

    Really!? Damn!

    :O

  • @J0k3r4U I did not say that.

  • good vid, shared.

  • @theramenbuddha Thank you.

  • Ian, have you heard of The Atheist Experience and its main host Matt Dillahunty? If so, what are your thoughts about the show and Matt? I've watched countless hours of that show, and I think it's great. Theists are fucking nuts.

  • @boxingaddict25 Never heard of it.

  • @LiftingForLife - Well I'd highly encourage you to look up some clips on YouTube. If you like guys like Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, etc. you will enjoy Dillahunty and the show. Just a recommendation.

  • @boxingaddict25 I've tired of most debates on theism lately, to be honest.

  • @LiftingForLife - As have I, especially since I've watched practically all of Hitchens' debates and no one was a better, more entertaining debater than him. I watch the AA show purely for entertainment now. I love listening to clueless theists (especially Christians) call in and just get intellectually thrashed.

  • @boxingaddict25 Yeah you're not joking man. I love watching that YouTube show. The dumb... I mean.... christians call up and try to refute him but he destroys them with logic every time.

  • @boxingaddict25 why not become agnostic far more intelligent.

  • @patt507 Agnosticism in an intellectual copout. It's not a real position.

  • @LiftingForLife Not really. Agnosticism just says that they're not sure what the truth is about things so they remain neutral until things are proven. An atheist can't disprove god and a religious nut can't prove god. The agnostic simply doesn't get involved.

  • @Viktir666 Agnosticism is both an unscientific and intellectually cowardly position.

  • @LiftingForLife I'm an atheist because I don't believe in fictional characters like Winnie the Pooh or the Invisible Jew, but, what if an agnostic just because he/she doesn't know what to believe? I guess that's kind of a cowardly thing to do, but, do you think they're closer to atheists than they are to religious fruit-loops?

  • @Viktir666 Agnosticism, to me, is simply atheism-light; agnostics admit there is no compelling reason to believe in a god, yet lack the courage to take a stand as such. To be quite frank... it's pussy thinking.

  • @LiftingForLife LOL "pussy thinking". I agree. I'm cool with agnostics though. At least they're not schizophrenics like people who attempt to mentally communicate with fictional entities and force it upon their kids too.

  • @Viktir666 Completely agreed. As long as they aren't theist they're fine in my book.

  • @LiftingForLife LOL! i dont understand why so many, obviously not all, are so against theists. i believe in God and my religion, even though i don't follow it, too hard! but I never looked down on atheists or considered then 'not fine' or in terms of body building words 'not clean'. lol

  • @LiftingForLife I know you like your facts so thats why I am not sure why you are an atheist, it is a FACT that the reason for us being here is unknowable so I really don't see why you would completely reject a "higher power", I do think all religeons are bs, because how could they know? This is the very essence of what I believe. Well anyway keep up the good work.

  • hey ian, unban me from the nbb fanpage, ive learnt my lesson, srs :)

  • @jdmlvn Who are you?

  • @LiftingForLife Gary Huynh

  • @LiftingForLife actually dont worry, i just had to re-like the fb page.

  • @jdmlvn Okay sir.

  • fuckin good video

  • you do make a point. however an ectomorph can tell an endomorph i can eat this pizza an not gain weight. it works for me. its debatable

  • @sup7man Not really, considering somatotypes do not exist.

  • A broscientist is a bit like a gambler playing roulette who decides to cover exactly half the board in single numbers in the hope of a 35:1 payout, not realizing that they are getting exactly the same odds as red/black. Both methods work, but one requires much less effort and is based on a real understanding of what's going on.

  • Funny that you keep mentioning Heath. I used to trade alot of PMs with him on BB.com (still have them) and he actually went out and told me to not use Whey either on cutting or bulking because it would made you retain a slight layer of water under the skin. He said it would be ok on Bulking when i wouldn't have another alternative in terms of protein but no way in hell while cutting lol.Off course at the time i didn't knew any better..

  • @OtisBDriftwood54 Wow, strong retard on his part for sure.

  • @LiftingForLife He actually mentions his use (Use of Whey) on his 1st DVD but then Hany started having him on whole foods all the time and that it would tighten up his skin and this and that. He's actually a pretty cool guy but he just doesn't know any better. I can get print screens of some of the messages when i get unbanned, some true gems in there. Nice work on the "Unleashed" review by the way.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand that video is off to favorites. Thank you Ian for educating us more and more.

  • Regarding the nonexisting necessity to eat six meals: I would love to believe you, but I just can´t, it goes against everything I´ve ever learnt about bodybuilding, however your statements seem to be very reasonable... So could you please do something to convince me? Point me to study or something? BTW as I´ve subscribed just recently I am starting to be real die hard fan. Take care.

  • @mcmechosoudek I've done several videos on this topic... search for "Ian McCarthy meal frequency"

  • @mcmechosoudek Check out Matt Ogus he's ripped and does IIFYM. and 3d muscle jorney, Jordan Teraza. PLENTY of examples

  • I don't see how bro science isn't valid. When you personally try a workout, and it produces measurable results, then isn't that just a scientific experiment conducted outside a lab? i.e. essentially a scientific experiment? Furthermore, even scientific papers published on pubmed or NEJM isn't universally applicable.

  • lol this reminds me of how people who dont run fitness classes, or things like bootcamps, call themselves xxxxfitness and you dont see them doing any running or swimming or anything that resembles athletic training, its a joke...bro science can be useful, same as science but it depends on how good the studies are/were,and some of the studies i have read are pretty terrible lol

  • Good video, please don't make them shorter. I love to watch your long videos.

Don't take advice from the lazy ass 'facebook' users.

  • Btw, Ian... Is there ANYTHING from broscience that you agree with? or is it ALL bullshit?

  • @SnapCity1 if its not bullshit its not broscience..............

  • "you would really have to fuck up a keto diet to not lose fat" LOL Ian you should swear more XD

  • true

  • Damn, awesome video!!!

  • bodybuilding isnt an art??? beg to differ

  • @anjan200001 I certainly see no way that you could rationalize such a claim.

  • @LiftingForLife it is purely aesthetic isnt it?

  • Good video, please make them shorter max of 6 min

  • The same thing goes in the firearms industry, as far as training and tactics go. Excellent video.

  • @deadheadbiker What do you mean by this?

  • great videos Ian.

  • I am pleased with this shitstorm.

  • great points

  • Question: Ian, I train full body twice/3 times a week. How many exercises and sets for each muscle group would you suggest? Thanks. Also, great videos.

  • I made a video when this whole thing happened covering this exact thing.. trying to defend you by saying I think your whole point was not that broscience didn't work but that it wasn't optimal. And i also covered the whole "you can't prove causation with correlation" thing. However, I never uploaded it. oh well haha

  • Some people prefer "it works for me" over the socratic method to assess how/why things work. I was watching a video of Lee Haney were they called him an expert in health and fitness. I was taken aback by that. He was definitely a great bodybuilder but that does not make someone an expert in health and fitness. Not saying he is a bro scientist but learning how to put muscle on YOUR body does not make someone an expert on health and fitness. Thumbs up. (Fellow Atheist here!!!!)

  • BTW, I'd love to see a channel where you bust up theist. I know your time is limited but I'd watch it. -eL

  • @eldogg4life A lot of truth there.

The question I always pose is simple: is there ANY way to determine our reality other than via the Socratic method? At least any other GOOD way?

I truly cannot even begin to describe how disappointed I am by the current state of this species.

  • Ian, how do you know that what you say and do is most efficient? Science changes more than broscience does.

  • @AtoZyzzyva No, it doesn't.

  • @LiftingForLife

So you're saying that 3 decades ago, science said exactly the same about human physiology - or anything, for that matter - as it does today?

  • @AtoZyzzyva yeah definitely...

Things like Newtons law of Gravitation, Gauss's law, Coloumb's Law, etc. change every year or so..

LOL.. pls GTFO.. Its clear you have absolutely no background in science to make such a statement..

  • @AtoZyzzyva Broscience changes all the fucking time you idiot. And a lot of scientific studies have been around for decades, just nobody pays attention to it half the time hahaha.

  • "it works for me" is relevant to training, the average East Asian who is short with relative long trunk and short limbs might want to train differently to the average West African, and of course even within related populations there are wildly varying body types.

Someone with narrow hips and long femurs might find squats less productive than other exercises. Also on nutrition, people do react differently, some people can't tolerate milk or bread, some people feel nothing from caffeine etc etc

  • Good stuff. I don't think I would wanna lift with you, but I will definitely watch and listen to you via this medium.

On second thought - you would probably be a kick ass personal trainer!

  • As always great video

  • Great video sir!

  • Pop-tart ads!

  • what is wrong with mike mentzers principles of HIT? I get confused because there are many references of studies that back up his theories, so many conflicting studies

  • This video works for me...

  • try cutting the videos shorter it gets boring watching 12 min vids

  • Awesome video. You pretty much worded everything I was thinking, and then some! Looking swole as well!

  • you have the words "troll bait" plastered all over this vid.

  • "really fuck up"=)))))

  • lol i tried telling doitbig about iifym and he was like "no way i will get fat" what i do works for me. lol guy eats like 100 grams of carbs a day and 500 of protein lol

  • Yo Ian, you planning on updating the No BS Training Tips series soon? I love the detail and anatomy aspect. A shoulder or bicep one?! :)

  • If it aint broken dont fix it... if someone sees somthing working for them why should they change it?

  • @HarveyJupe nobody says they have to change what they're doing. They just have to admit that it's not optimal/the most efficient way to do whatever they are doing. That's the whole point of the video.

    @Ian GJDM !!11

  • This video works for me...

  • Hey Ian; what's your take on straight sets vs pyramid sets. All the people I know do pyramid sets, is that the way to go?

  • And one more thing:

6:00 - 6:30 is gold!! That is it! Send it out to all the broscience believing trolls who don't want to watch your videos. These are golden phrases my friend!!!

  • awesome video, can you do one on optimal number of sets per body part in a single workout

  • inb4 shitstorm

  • good point, but stop defending your self so much. i enjoy watching both you and the hodge twins, them more for comedy and you the science aspect. intelligent people will watch your videos and listen, and the ones who are spending 11 minutes to make fun of your hair or clothes have nothing else to do with there time. let the viewer make the decision, no need to defend your self all the time dude, just spit the knowledge and let the trolls troll.

  • @jamesmartin61 AMEN

  • @jamesmartin61 So true. Trolls aren't going to stop trolling. It's like asking a dog to stop wagging its tail when it's excited. It just isn't going to stop.

  • looking bigger man, keep it up. nicely done video as well.

  • LOL AT THE POPTART AD.

  • @Liftfforglory211 I don't have any poptart ad....just some annoying danish commercial.

  • I repeat:

Why don't we dislike TMW's videos for the next days without any good reson?

Their fans would dislike every of Ians videos just for the lolz, so why don't we ????

Thumbs up so everybody can see it please :/
