  • One cannot describe the impact, gravitas, and power of Joan Baez to a young person (20 yrs old) now. There is no female vocalist currently performing in the USA who could match her credibility with any audience---even in front of hardened inmates in a maximum security prison. Look at the faces of the men in that audience......Who but a Joan Baez could transfigure them like that? Yes, any current titty-girl hip-hopper could arouse interest on a prison stage, but something special happens here!

  • If this doesnt put a tear in your eye I dont know what will.

  • Un poco surrealista escuchar Viva mi patria Bolivia en una carcel en USA

  • Mimi was abit like Emylou Harris-a giver all the way, great harmonizer and back-up vocalist.

  • I knew Joan's first husband in the peace movement. Prison did not leave him; I don't think he ever got over it.

  • @kathrynsmith724 : Whatever happened to him?

  • JOAN: ''Some prisons don't let us in even.''

    PRISONER: ''YO LET US OUT!''

    Brilliant. :)

  • I'd start a prison riot after hearing that song.

  • I didn't know this hard story about Joan Baez, I've been listening to her songs since I was eight and I got the passion for singing and playing from her, now I know we have something else in common we have both lost someone we love becouse of cancer, that's can only makes me feel even nearer her, I do hope that music has helped to face the loss better

  • 2 champions-

  • Wow. This is such amazing footage and for Joan and Mimi to have such courage. True music makers indeed.

  • Those harmonies, those smiles, wonderful women

  • I like how in the 60s musicians did concerts for prisoners. People had more humanity back then.

  • @mrtyles

There are still plenty of musicians who do this... and Mimi Farina started an organization which still arranges concerts for various kinds of institutions. It is called "Bread and Roses."

  • what year did Mimi die? Looks like Mimi had some of the same values as Joan. She just wasnt as well know as her sister.

  • @krstnlhjt

The entire family shared Joan's values - they are from a Quaker family and their parents were pacifists and activists.

  • Two outstanding women, beautiful inside and out!

  • Great video.

    Love those two beautiful women.

  • Two people who carry on the life which was expressed musically be Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. I know others have loved as powerfully, but I am just trying to make a point. They have forever been grounded in the goodness of life and have shared their love for humanity by their life style and their song. These are voices which shall live forever.

  • Is there anyone who knows the lyrics they are singing in Viva Mi Patria? I founds the lyrics, but they sing some of the parts differently.

  • its their own version and the lyrics are a little distorsioned........is the second national anthem

the real author is bolivian pepe murillo

beautiful anyway and better than the original

  • interesting is that Mimi's second husband, Milan Melvin died of cancer the same year as Mimi died of cancer. Different types of cancer but it is at least striking.

  • Interesting and sad. I did not know Mimi but know that Joan felt she was a very powerful, warm, caring person. A tough story of real-life but it did not stop Joan.

    David Hoffman - filmmaker

  • i love Mimi's voice... RIP you angel

  • What an appropo song for a prison crowd.

  • @bookkeeper57 a Bob Dylan is always appropo... and damn good songwriting too

  • Great!

    Thank you very much!
