It's actually based off of a book, called "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis, he's just throwing a twist on it.

The chorus of the song, "Wake me when its springtime in heaven, and I'm strong enough to walk in that place" is is alluding to The Great Divorce, written by C.S. Lewis. In the story, ghosts are taken from hell to heaven and given a chance to repent and come to God. When they first get there they are unable to walk on the ground because its too hard. After they have been there for a while, however, they become strong enough and physical enough to stay there.

By the way, The Great Divore is an amazing book. I think everyone should read it. C.S. Lewis was one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century. He didn't just write the Chronicles of Narnia. The Out of the Silent Planet trilogy is also amazing.

well in Christian terms, the spirit is the desire of our souls to do whats right, and the flesh represents the immediate physical gratification, most commonly referred to as sexual temptation and lust.

The song itself, i feel as if Dustin is singing about his reflection on his time on Earth, and seeing that its so hard to live with temptations and continual sinful behavior, he is singing about death and life after death.

the song is about hope that dustin finds in heaven, not on earth.

Dustin and Jesse are so different I agree with the guy next to me stop trying to compare them. Some of the stuff Im reading here, you realise is all opinion. In terms of lyrical complexity and just plain having fun with the words, Lacey wins. That being said, Dustin also writes incredible lyrics and is MUCH better than Jesse in an acoustic setting. I've seen Brand New twice now live and until you hear a song like You Won't Know or Degausser live you can't appreciate what Jesse gives on stage. I don't think you can stand Dustin and Jesse side by side and say that one is better than the other.

Dustin is incredibly talented but I don't agree with you on that one. I think Jesse Lacey is much more talented. Just listen to Deja Entendu or The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me. Hell, just listen to Your Favorite Weapon. The lyrics, metaphors and the imagery is much more complex and better done than Dustin's.

You are talking to someone who owns all 3 Brand New albums, so I don't need to do any homework. Jesse is a very talented lyricist. But Jesse's lyrics never surpass the scope of love a relationships. In the Devil and God he became obsessed with death, which broadened.
