Bill Ayers was a professor of education at the University of Illinois, who had just helped the city secure a $50 million grant to improve secondary education in the region.
Ayers was supported by the city and the Chicago educational community in that effort.
Obama was appointed to chair a board overseeing this project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
Classic Rove tactics: Find something inflammatory about your opponent (doesn't matter if it's true or not) and repeat it over and over and over again and just drive it into the ground until the ignorant and gullible believe it. Your opponent will then either waste time defending themselves (when they could be talking about real issues), or they won't defend themselves and seemingly give your statements credibility. This is underhanded and unconscionable and not something I want from a leader.
