Welfare as we know it, came about in 1935 when the Social Security Act was passed under FDR. Under that act a number of govt. agencies were created... HHS, HUD, Dept. of Labor, Dept. of Agriculture, and the Dept. of Education.

SecretTheatre, I don't think it's bad for the Fed. Govt. to offer help during a national crisis if our national security is at stake. Anything less than that should be handled by each individual State Govt. or local charity, due to a genuine need (ie. fire, flood, disabled, etc.).
The out of control welfare system as it exists today has only created a society with an entitlement mentality... Personal accountability and responsibility for ones poor choices no longer seems to matter.

Writer and radio talk show host, Michael Medved, has often talked about the U.S. as being, "The Greatest Nation On God's Green Earth"... and I truly believe his statement...
Unfortunately though, I'm still seeing a lot of people finding fault or denial to that fact.... I say fact... because if it were not true, would people continue to risk their lives, daily, to breach our borders in order to live here?

Minorities became entitled to the constitution when they proved that they were worthy of it....When they stood up for themselves they earned the right to be free. The Constitution applies to those who are willing to earn it.

Women were always equal to men even before they demanded their rights. Those basic rights are things noone should have to earn because as it says in the declaration of Independance they were given to us by our creator.
And don't assume I don't appreciate the sacrifices that were made by our founding fathers I am just not blind to their human weaknesses and flaws. Even they knew they werent right about everything, which is why they left us a constitution that can be ammended.

People also have to live as a group in relation to others, which means making sacrifices, paying taxes etc... If you can't live cooperatively with other human beings then there is a problem because that is how people lived for thousands of years and how they were meant to live.
