Keep in mind that Medicare is not free health care. Every member pays premiums, and very high co-pays. A simple Emergency Room visit cost some one on Medicare $300 to $500 if the problem is minor. That is their out of pocket expense.
No Dental. No Prescription without additional insurance. You can go bankrupt on the prescription costs alone. No eye care. This is actually a pretty poor health plan, but it is better than no health plan at all.
A very good option, it makes perfect sense. It is like paying tax but you have a say where you want your tax money to go, and it is optional, which is great. You still might want to have insurance, but that is your choose.
Now all we need to do now is get rid of the taxation system and you will have a perfect solution.

Hey I can't speak for everyone else, that's why I'm doing something about it, for me first, everyone else will hopefully wake up. A lot of people are waking up, old paradigms are shattering. I'm just grateful I don't live in a country that wants to regulate small boobies, & female ejaculating in porn! That would be a nightmare!
The majority of Americans think of the Soviet Union when they hear Communism, and with America's history with the Soviet Union, it isn't all that surprising many Americans have no idea what Communism actually is. Too bad they won't pick up and read Marx and Engels' work. I'm no Communist, but I'm always expanding base of knowledge.
The US in the 80's was a beautiful thing: ET, Back to the Future, all the California Hollywood stuff. I love it. I escape into that movie world. But at the same time people around the world were starving to death. It was an innocent time. But it is over. It's too late to pretend we don't know what's going on. Fight for ideas based on the possiblity that you might have been born as a Haitian, or a Cambodian, or a Guatemalan.
The best sign of brainwashing is when lower middle class people get behind big business right wing positions. The trouble is, in order to change your mind you would have to rethink your identity...after all, you've been spewing bullshit for years.
Every person in the world thinks they're opinion is right. Don't you think there is a slight chance that most of you just read newspapers, a few books, chat with friends, and form opinions in order to type them on comment forms and you don't have a clue? Look how sure every single commenter is and yet how different their opinions are. But also notice the weird seamless transitions from pro-privatized healthcare to anti-immigration rhetoric -- like there is a connection.
most everything is connected one way or the other. once u fail to see the connections, u truly are in grave peril. rember the saying, history repeats itself? think about that for a second and let me know what u come up with
It's a comment so vague it could apply to anything. Do you think all these people commenting "seeing the connections?" Do you think immigration is a relevant topic of inquiry in a discussion about healthcare, or do you think its just distracting? After all, unless you're Native American, you're an immigrant. I think America may stand or fall on the basis of how it handles healthcare. Notice the company you keep when you fight against healthcare.
i do see the connections between illegal immigration and healthcare. people are concerned about the cost of both of them. do i agree that we should kick illegals out? nope. i think we should build a fence and then naturalize them. do i believe in healthcare reform? yep, just not the kind being offered. im a sociologist, i see connections all over the place. feel free to ask me about some more connections, that u may not understand, that some people bring up
I don't see the connection between healthcare and immigration policy any more than a connection between economic regulation and same sex marriage. You could drum one up, but I would argue that coke and pepsi voter identities are why people who are anti-abortion are also anti-health care. I think people identify with the party, then just read the newspaper for talking points. How did dumb poor racist folks ever get in bed greedy boring CEO's?
@Converse2Grow Of course immigration is relevant. You cant disscuss one without the other. How the hell are we supposed to cover all 3 million new people, many of which are from the 3rd world every year? That will finish us.
Yes, SS, Medicare and Medicade are 78 trillion in debt. Addign another entitlment we cannot do. Sorry.
Although, I suppose if you just bomb the hell out of other countries, replace their leaders with military dictators, you can set up factories in order to get cheap clothing and plastic crap for next to nothing. America needs to work for something other than its own invulnerability. Your economic policies are increasing wage gaps, you're in a "meltdown" and your foreign policy is a mess. I'm not sure what it is that America stands for? What are you protecting?
Oh and what about covering 3 million new immigrants every year, many of whom are 3rd world, like African? Fuck that noise, we dont want to cover fricans. What is this, a world welfare state?
Immigration has to get cut to 250,000 a year before we even talk about public options,
@calimar28: I dont mind covering them. Why does it matter where they are from? Do you have something against other human beings? While you are only able to pull yourself up by your bootstraps, I believe I am strong enough to help those in need and myself.
Im for single payer, and I dont mind paying higher taxes when we need to.
@Habitt5253 What does it matter? Are you kidding me? First we dont need the immigration, it only causes problems as we are getting overpopulated. We damn sure dont need african immigration, as that ads almost nothing (except crime) to the nation. We bring in what, 300,000 Africans a year or something? And now we are supposed to pay for their healthcare?
Why dont we just pass a bill paying for all African healthcare, and cover everyone in Africa? Sound good?
@calimar28 Makes sense, I wish all of this was possible, but It will never happen. Its technically possible, but practically/realistically impossible due to government/corporate corruption.
would u mind if the govt took 100% of your money and used it the way they saw fit? what if they used it they way they saw fit and u had the healthiest nation on the planet, would that be okay?
Nowhere does the constitution say it is a right. And plus the constitution protects those who make money from havign it stolen by liberals who want to hand it out.
Yeah, go progressives...do that public option thing again! HAHAHAHAHAHA! You fucking crybabiy losers, we dont want it! And soon, you will get the message when we throw your asses out of power.
November is coming. Oh and Greyson, Insurance companies make only 2% proffitt. You think the goverment can do better? HAHAHA look at SS and Medicare and HOW IN DEBT THEY ARE!
You know, I have been following the health care issue in the US ever since Obama was sworn in. I study philosophy and really wanted to see what happens when a democracy whose citizens support an important issue by a wide margin functions. I live in Canada, yet I wanted to see what would happen when lobbyists came up against the decision of the citizens. Thankfully Young Turks allowed me to see how media controls peoples ideas -- note the comment roll here. America is a fragile idea, save it!
Ah yes, the socialism = fascism morons. Just show them the political spectrum. It's not hard to understand. Socialism in on the left and Fascism, which is clearly what the Nazi rule was, is as far right as you can go. Universal Health Care, which takes its influence from socialism cannot be fascist.
But one has to wonder how free countries turn into dictatorial ones in the first place.
And American leaders believed that freedom only means the enforcement of the protection of individual and corporate properties and wealth. Greater the wealth and properties = greater protection.
As for other freedoms they're expendable or not-applied (after all America is, was, or should be a "Christian nation").
Interesting. A liberal provides a market solution to a market problem. I encourage everyone to favorite the actual Alan Grayson video and ask as many people as possible to check it out.
Wake up and see the light, you don't really need a Ph.D to see the plain truth:
No Cost Control Mechanism (Public Option) + Individual mandate + Fine (fees) = Another Multi-billion Bailout Bill for the private insurance industry, EVERY YEAR !!
If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom: and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that, too.
Look I know Insurance companies do horrible things but I'm sick of them being scapegoated. They do not make nearly as much profit as people think.
Even the most progressives don't seem to acknowledge that the pharmeceuticals and the biomedical companies are the ones making all the money. Health care costs are so much higher in the U.S because we are being ripped off on the cost of our medicine and machinery. Set some price limits and you will see real health care reform.
oh, i see man. yeah, it may be a shock, but its true. health care is just so expensive, and as an uninsured college student that can't afford it...well it really sucks to be quite frank. oh and hello to sweden, my fathers side of the family comes from sweden and denmark...always wanted to visit there, haven't yet though.
Even in introducing a fairly reasonable bill, Grayson manages to use himself as an example of why health insurance in the US is broken: he is upset that it won't cover a completely elective procedure, and one that he has utilized on five occasions, far greater than the average American. This is called the tragedy of the commons, and allowing selfish people to take advantage of shared resources is a primary reason collective insurance costs tend to increase unsustainably.
and if you want socialism for america, you should just move to north korea. universal healthcare absolutely leads to a loss of liberty. perhaps you should look up the meaning of liberty.
And if you want socialism for America, you should just move to South Korea which went to Universal Health care in just 12 short years using the Japanese Universal Health Care System as a model.
We have funneled many of our USA taxpayer dollars into South Korea to allow them to have LIBERTY and UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.
HOW DOES SOCIALIZED MEDICINE LEAD TO THE LOSS OF LIBERTY? Please explain how Canada or France or the UK is any less free then we are. They all spend less per capita than we do on health care and they have a longer life expectancy and better outcomes. Pleas explain.
nah, only a complete idiot would believe that universal healthcare would lead to a lose of liberty, especially in the face of every other developed democracy that has it and is in much better shape than we are.
Universal healthcare would necessarily result in a loss of liberty. You lose the freedom to choose to purchase/not to purchase health insurance. You are forced to pay for it (or forced not to earn any money) in your taxes. That is an automatic loss of liberty simply by having it pass. It also will result in more deaths, if we look at "every other developed democracy". We aren't a democracy, btw... we are a republic.
I might have missed it, but I didn't see Alan Grayson saying anything about being forced to pay for anything. It's strictly voluntary as I've understood it.
As for the more deaths, I have no idea where you're getting that statistic from. It doesn't sound correct to me, as more people getting health care would lead to fewer deaths.
Also I don't understand what you mean by saying that the US is a republic. What are you suggesting we have instead of the current system?
The comment was a response to katavideo. No, Grayson was talking about putting Medicare as a competitor to the insurance companies. This is a bad idea on so many fronts that 500 chars won't cover it. PM me if you want to hear the reasons.
Socialized medicine causes lower standards of care and, consequently, more deaths. It is a simple fact and backed by statistics.
I suggest we restore the republic. I was clarifying that we are not a democracy. It is a critical distinction.
I would like to see those statistics, because I've heard statistics that say the direct opposite.
That doesn't answer my question tho. What I'm wondering is, what do you mean by the US being a republic rather than a democracy? Do you mean you don't want elections?
Democracy is the rule of the majority. We don't have (and have never had) a democracy. The US is a republic: a form of government where the people choose their leaders. If we were a democracy there would be a majority vote and socialized medicine would be cast down.
Unfortunately, the country has strayed far from the Constitution and we are no longer a republic; we aren't a democracy either. If you have doubts, try to get elected.
Ah ok. Well I definetely prefer what I would refer to as direct democracy over indirect democracy, in other words it would be better if we voted on issues rather than people.
But I'm not sure socialized medicine would be cast down, for example, the public option has wide support.
Hehe yes, I'm perfectly aware that the current so called democracy is a scam.
The Grand Old Perverts are fond of saying "the people don't want this health care bill" Yeah, since they took out the Public Option.
That's what people really want. Buying into Medicare would be the simplest, most cost effective answer, but Obama and Congress (except for Grayson and a few others) are owned by the Health Care Industry blood suckers.
"it would be better if we voted on issues rather than people"
It would be better only if the majority of people had ANY clue about the topic (which is highly questionable in the US if you believe the statistics and surveys considering topics of basic education).
Sure, but atleast the people would vote for what they thought was right. Politicians generally don't know squat except made up financial bull and then they vote accordingly to what big business wants, so it's a lose-lose.
i dont think u understand why we fought the cold war and against socialism for so many years. u really should do yourself a favor and study up. many people lost their lives to fight against systems which u seem to be advocating.
You could go into a semantical argument about what the definition of Socialism is, but ultimately there's a huge difference between a welfare state that incorporates free enterprise, and a government monopoly.
So let me get this right: You're in favor of sending people to WAR, but you think it infringes upon their liberties if they paid a tax to provide HEALTHcare for themselves and their fellow countrymen? Whatever happended to charity and patriotism? btw: There was a brilliant commentary this week on the BBC: "This healthcare plan, which European countries would reject because it's far too conservative and right-wing, is somehow considered 'socialistic' in the US." You're successfully indoctrinated.
i appreciate the sharing of information but ur question of "why did you fight the cold war" came out of nowhere. then, with ur next response, u say i favor sending people to war. dude, please, if u want to have a legitimate conversation, im game. if u truly want to understand a different point of view, i will share it with you. if you only want to make accusations and trap me into arguments which u already have the answers for, please chat with someone else. thank you
Ok, I can see how my response could seem a little polemic. For that I apologize. But I don't see how my question was out of nowhere because you specifically wrote: "i dont think u understand why we fought the cold war and against socialism for so many years"
Now let me ask you: Does your apparent aversion to socialism (whatever that is) also make you reject social security? And if so, aren't you lumping together two different things here?
no need for name calling. i thought u were older than me, stop acting childish. if u think that type of socialist utopia is the way you want to live, u have the right to move to the countries u have mentioned. america has always been different. do u know the story behind the statue of liberty? if not, i suggest you look into it to truly understand what our country was founded on. ill guarantee u one thing, it wasnt for the socialist system which you are espousing
if u are older than i am i would be SHOCKED! im sorry, i have no time for u or ur name calling. go spew ur venomous hatred to someone else cuz im done with u
Talking about doing something and DOING it is two different things. I assume alan Grayson just wants to keep his job by talking. Will this proposal be done or will there be a public option or single payer? not on your life...
Republican only protect their interest, and its in your face any body can see right though it, except for the dumbshit that listen to them, the one that cheer for Palin, (you betcha) and think Glen is their savior.
People need to ask themselves what generates the profits and pays the huge salaries and benefits to the directors and officers of these healthcare corporations. The only way to generate all those profits and executive pay is to take in more premiums than they pay out in benefits.
While I rarely have agreed with politicians in general lately this does sound good on the surface. What is the argument that is being used to say this public option is bad?
I had $30K in medical bills treating wifes lymphoma and we had insurance. Bankruptcy, but alive. I'd buy into this in a heartbeat just so the those fucking insurance companies dont get my money. Once you get screwed by them you will think different about healthcare reform.
Universal health care is implemented in all industrialized countries, with the exception of the United States. If you don't want a public option then there are plenty of third world countries that will be happy to have you as a citizen.
I wanna see corporations pony up the doe to people when minimum wage increases in their area's so that poor mom or dad making $15 when the minimum wage goes up by $1.75 it goes up for that mom and dad. cuz all consumer items go up when minimum wage does but the families making more than the new minimum wage have to do without, accept that fat cat at the top who gets another 20 mill house, and that's not right.
i dont trust him with additional powers. he tried to implement cap and trade and would have done so if he could have. he reversed his own decision to try "terrorists" in civilian court and now is gonna keep them in gitmo. he mentioned on the campaign trail that he wanted health care to eventually become govt run. this is his first step. he wanted to tax the crap out of guns so people couldnt afford to buy them. etc... i dont trust the man and dont trust the govt either
far from a racist dude. shit, im 100% italian and probably browner than u! haha glad to know we have some common ground such as pro guns and social justice, not to mention being against a nanny state. however, a sustainable welfare state is simply not possible. u see, we give the leaders too much control over our lives and they very easily can abuse it. i mean, the patriot act scares the shit out of me! obama just extended it even when he campaigned against it. cont
garcia, we the people are simply sick and tired of the elites trying to tell us how to think and that their way is the right way. sorry, we tend to disagree. this country was never intended to be a socialized one. it was never intended to be a nanny state. it was never intended to be a country which rewards failure. it was never intended to be hostile to gun owners, etc.... that is where much of the "taking back our country" comes from
lol. actually, i was smiling when u thought my veins were bursting out. i like brown people food. i think every farmer should own a couple of em. hehehe JK on the really, im down with the brown. i think it is very important that when this economy collapses, the american people dont take it out on the mexicans the way the germans took it out on the jews. i have respect for hard working people. cont...
Nothing wrong with socialism. A single payer program funded by taxes and tariffs is the only real answer. Health care is a matter of the commons. C'mon America. Call the President and Congress and push for Medicare for all. We can phase it in slowly, but we owe it to ourselves to do this. It is the only thing that makes any sense.
aw, how cute holmes, u just made a momma reference. its been a good 20 years since ive heard one of them. u see, the difference between me and u is that i will take my cock, push ur shit in, and not think twice about it. thats figurative language of course, so dont go poppin wood on me know. basically, ur fucked. we are taking this country back regardless of what kind of BS u spew. my side will win and ur side will have to get use to it or move to sweden. :)
Keep in mind that Medicare is not free health care. Every member pays premiums, and very high co-pays. A simple Emergency Room visit cost some one on Medicare $300 to $500 if the problem is minor. That is their out of pocket expense.

Look how sure every single commenter is and yet how different their opinions are. But also notice the weird seamless transitions from pro-privatized healthcare to anti-immigration rhetoric -- like there is a connection.

And now we are supposed to pay for their healthcare?
Why dont we just pass a bill paying for all African healthcare, and cover everyone in Africa? Sound good?

Once again freedom vs dictatorship is thrown in.

Even in introducing a fairly reasonable bill, Grayson manages to use himself as an example of why health insurance in the US is broken: he is upset that it won't cover a completely elective procedure, and one that he has utilized on five occasions, far greater than the average American. This is called the tragedy of the commons, and allowing selfish people to take advantage of shared resources is a primary reason collective insurance costs tend to increase unsustainably.

treez78 1 year ago
And if you want socialism for America, you should just move to South Korea which went to Universal Health care in just 12 short years using the Japanese Universal Health Care System as a model.
We have funneled many of our USA taxpayer dollars into South Korea to allow them to have LIBERTY and UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE.
DillonX 1 year ago
HOW DOES SOCIALIZED MEDICINE LEAD TO THE LOSS OF LIBERTY? Please explain how Canada or France or the UK is any less free then we are. They all spend less per capita than we do on health care and they have a longer life expectancy and better outcomes. Pleas explain.
uyd 1 year ago 3
@treez78
nah, only a complete idiot would believe that universal healthcare would lead to a lose of liberty, especially in the face of every other developed democracy that has it and is in much better shape than we are.
KataVideo 1 year ago
Universal healthcare would necessarily result in a loss of liberty. You lose the freedom to choose to purchase/not to purchase health insurance. You are forced to pay for it (or forced not to earn any money) in your taxes. That is an automatic loss of liberty simply by having it pass. It also will result in more deaths, if we look at "every other developed democracy". We aren't a democracy, btw... we are a republic.
ppardee 1 year ago
@ppardee
VolcanicPenguin 1 year ago
The comment was a response to katavideo. No, Grayson was talking about putting Medicare as a competitor to the insurance companies. This is a bad idea on so many fronts that 500 chars won't cover it. PM me if you want to hear the reasons.
Socialized medicine causes lower standards of care and, consequently, more deaths. It is a simple fact and backed by statistics.
I suggest we restore the republic. I was clarifying that we are not a democracy. It is a critical distinction.
ppardee 1 year ago
great point u make ppardee. i wish more of u existed in this country. :)
treez78 1 year ago
I would like to see those statistics, because I've heard statistics that say the direct opposite.
That doesn't answer my question tho. What I'm wondering is, what do you mean by the US being a republic rather than a democracy? Do you mean you don't want elections?
VolcanicPenguin 1 year ago
Deaths per 1k
US: 8.3
UK: 10.1
Democracy is the rule of the majority. We don't have (and have never had) a democracy. The US is a republic: a form of government where the people choose their leaders. If we were a democracy there would be a majority vote and socialized medicine would be cast down.
Unfortunately, the country has strayed far from the Constitution and we are no longer a republic; we aren't a democracy either. If you have doubts, try to get elected.
ppardee 1 year ago
VolcanicPenguin 1 year ago
The Grand Old Perverts are fond of saying "the people don't want this health care bill" Yeah, since they took out the Public Option.
That's what people really want. Buying into Medicare would be the simplest, most cost effective answer, but Obama and Congress (except for Grayson and a few others) are owned by the Health Care Industry blood suckers.
momzacarp 1 year ago
"it would be better if we voted on issues rather than people"
It would be better only if the majority of people had ANY clue about the topic (which is highly questionable in the US if you believe the statistics and surveys considering topics of basic education).
