What's so special about this? Search for "Corolla E10 diesel", the first video of old corolla (92-96) starting @-21*C. My petrol E10 starts @-28*C after being outdoor for few days or even a week. You only need a good battery and good oil. No rocket science here.
It will start. They tested it in even worse conditions. Like in Sweden... At about -44 °C. The thing is that the diesels now are as good as normal petrol engines if not better. Do you really think that vw will send a car to production without testing it?
LoL. I used to not like, or better said, trust VW, but then I test drived one and I LOVED IT! then I bought another, and another. I have three VW's and I've convinced 18 of my friends to buy them. They really do work in cold temps, and they are reliable. I'm content...beyond that is.
The new TDI's have common rail fuel injection which allows better placement of glow plugs, so they can ungel fuel better than old diesels, and start easily in cold temps. As the engine runs the heat dissipates up the line.
It is a combination of both the ULSD and the engine that allows it to work at such low temperatures. Gelling occurs but the direct injection system avoids it.
Haha, they're just spraying the outside which means the fuel lines and injecters are still warm. Its a gimmick, everyone knows diesel gels up. Heated gararge or engine block heater.
New diesel engines like the TDI's have better glow plug placement because of common rail fuel injection, so they are able to easily "ungel" diesel at very low temperatures. You can leave a new TDI outside at 40 below for a week and it'll start.
Kerosene? Who the hell puts kerosene in their tank? You don't need any fuel additives to start a new TDI at 25 below you just turn the key and it starts. And gelling isn't a problem because the glowplugs work better than the old diesels. It's this great thing called progress that comes from this thing called engineering.
They are also in a White room which makes it difficult to see. Once they start misting the car the lingering vapor in the air makes it impossible to see anyone's breath.
lol maby because an engine wint get ice on it . duh. extremly cold but i never saw ice on an sngine unless the hood was off or left up during sleet or snow
but in real life the actual engine has time to freeze up. if they are spot freezing the outside of the car the engine wont even get touched and stay pretty much the same temp as before
spot freezing? just how fast do you think you could spot freeze that baby without killing the people in the room? What you think it was 100 below in there?
It's not the moisture in the air that does it, it's the moisture in your breath. So unless these guys are completely devoid of water (and therefore life, which seems plausible here) there would be steam.
Try living through an upstate New York winter. You'll see your breath up until it's about 40 out, regardless of humidity.
the vid was probably made in volkswagen weather simulator lab ( all car companies have one) and they probably altered the setting with in the room to change it and yes there breath was foggy
They play that "the guy inside pretends not to hear the guy outside" so they won't have to mention waiting 45 seconds for the glowplugs to get the cylinder warm enough.
My relatively ancient '03 Golf TDI had a MAX 10 second glow plug cycle and I don't see a modern '10 common rail needing 45 seconds as you state. Do some research before you post.
No but did do 0 to -10 on a pretty frequent basis (Colorado and Northern NM during X-mas trips) with no drama on the standard glow cycle which was nowhere near 45 seconds as you state.
Actually I was in Siberia but it started right up. I remember as I turned the key thinking if only TrapOxidizer were here I could say "ha, sucka." But you never showed.
I was on the crew. It was shot in a giant freezer and the temperature was -25 below for real. The car was in there for hours and hours and yes it ACTUALLY started right away.

why don't they leave it for 10 hours there and see if it starts then

Leave it in -30 C for 12 hours, then start!

How did ol Ted get out of the frozen car. ha ha

Hang on a second: Diesel fuel becomes a jelly at -20 C. How do they manage to overcome that? Any VW engineers here? Hello?

Glow plugs.

Actually glow plugs heat the combustion chambers to help a diesel start in cold weather. A fuel heater is used to ungel the fuel.

WTF? Haven't you heard that there is so called "arctic diesel" that remains as liquid until about -45C

Coldest city ... haha. Yeah that must be the high in Siberia. I live in Iowa and the temp last winter hit 29 below.

from gelling that is, not freezing
flyinhiundertheradar 2 years ago
what they don't tell is what they treated the diesel fuel with to keep in from freezing. Probably had a fair amount of kerosene in it.

Fake ;)
My golf 2.0TDI 4motion was more than 12 hours minus -28 celcius degrees cold, and it started well :D
