Ofcourse Bush enabled Obama to run. That's a given and understood in America to be the reason why democracy still works. We can "bait and switch" or change our mind and go in the opposite direction. The west should be proud because Obama was indeed elected not just by Americans but by how the world felt about him as well.

I don't agree that American comedy is as vague as he suggests. Our comedic heros are not actors the way they are on British TV, they are stand up comics like Joan Rivers, and Roseanne Barr, and Kathy Griffin or Mel Brooks etc etc etc...and you can definitely say "she's a bit of a joan rivers or a bit of a roseanne etc.

That was me handing him the rose at the end of the speech! I worked at the festival, and had the very great honour of looking after Mr fry that day. What a delightful man. The only famous person to 'out-famous' all the other stars at the festival.

As an American, I think Stephen Fry is absolutely spot on in his understanding of the American psyche. It's remarkable how accurate he is in describing how Americans are the way they are.
