  • Nona Hendryx is phenomenal and this is a great song. But the video is stupid.

  • Thank you for sharing this video. This song was one of my favorites back in the 80's, along with her song, "Too Hot to Handle". She is a fabulous vocalist and honey, I just love her hair in this video!!

  • @Kasbahkabaret reminds me of mike & Janet and tboz lol @0:38

  • HaHa I remember watching this video back in the day on BET video vibrations or video soul....wow! this song is still hot I was like in Kindergarten back then....LOL

  • OMG! this is off the hook! the best video and song I know!!!

  • I love Nona, she's my favorite in Labelle, love her voice, love the way she writes a song

  • Serious!!

  • A broken heart isnt easy to hid//////

  • GIRRRRRRRRRRRRRL

  • I LUV THIS SONG......I ALSO LUV NONA'S HAIR AND MAKEUP IN THIS VIDEO....SICK!

  • Happy birthday Nona... Today is my birthday too :)

  • she did it all very well her music speaks to the heart to some many ways; I think that is way it is considered funk, rock and soul.

  • Damn, I miss those times. Good times.

  • I remember this when I was younger!! One of the few songs by her I really liked.

  • Was'nt this produced by Jellybean of THE TIME?

  • @HUSTLEMAN2 It was written by Jellybean, Nona, and Lisa Keith. Produced by Jellybean Johnson & Spencer Bernard. Jimmy & Terry played synths and percussion on the track also.

  • WOW....all this time i was saying...."watch an outcry"....smh

  • Uh, huh she (Nona Hendryx) knows she's got it! Another one of our truly legendary soul divas!

  • LOL! I was 13 when this came out. I loved this song and use to jam to it. I still do and I'm 37.

  • @MsElaine0035 I was 13 as well in 87 and fell in love with this song

  • This has to be one of my all time favorites.. cuz I was also my Theme song.. thnx for bringing this out here.. all the memories of those dayz.. Wow!!!!

  • just goes to show that i (& probably everybody from this era) have seen, heard and forgotten more great music and artists than i care to think about-thanks for youtube though. nona is one of my all time favorites. she really knows how to put it down!

  • to the 12yo dimwits that bag the video. the tech you use to jerk off with now didnt exist back then. vhs tapes (expensive), quite often one shot video clips and super basic pcs/video software editing etc you take for granted now. enjoy a good song/great singer of go back to your glee/britney/gaga robots that will never even come close/rant off m49 i WAS there

  • ahh BET video soul! Man I was a runt when this came out, loved it though.

  • Daaaaaaaamn! 'Scuse me while I dance!

  • Daaaaaaaamn! 'Scuse me while dance!

  • ...Brings on the Funk!

  • Sound, marry me.

  • This was during that whole "Mad Max"/Leather/Rocker time in the 80s. So many looks during the 80s-gotta love it.

  • wow over 20 years since i heard this joint hotttttt music need to get back to this.

  • This is stupid. Lol. How 80s.

  • @JohnnyLovely2

And you can judge what was cutting edge & created the format for today? You were THERE in the 80's ?? I think not. Judge yourself before all you do is trash the past.

  • Hahahahaha ohhh no. The start w the mirror images was corny enough, but then she actually SWIMS across the screen.

OMFG MAJOR LMFAO TO THE MAX!!!!!!!!

  • I want Nona.

  • Somebody had mentioned Khandi Alexander in their post. Now Khandi can't touch Nona, but I do see somelikeness there. If there was a movie about Labelle, I could definately see Khandi playing the role of Nona. That guitar solo is like that. I agree that it should have been longer. Now if that's Jellybean instead of Jesse; then he was ripping it! And of course Jimmy Jam& Terry lewis are geniuses. Did anyone notice the word "TIME" shown at 2:37-2:47. Nuff said!

  • @rocknsoulbro

...I agree with about the 'Time' plug, that was pretty slick. As I recall, Ronnie 'Head' Drayton (who w/o a doubt, has been very notable 'funk-shredder' since the late 70's) did the guitar work, is listed on the credits and I know he was apart of Nona's band. ...But on the otherhand, the solo does sound very much like it could've been recorded by either J-Bean or Jesse, doesn't it?

  • Thank you for posting this. Back in the day, this was the jam! Now I agree that the only good thing about this corny video is seeing Nona and her "FINE" self. Back then it was janet,jody,lisa-lisa,sheila&vanity. But to see an older black female singer with the sex appeal she had, was mind blowing. I saw her performing with a Labelle reunion on some tv show and she's STILL fine! Hey she might be old enough to be my mother, but age is just a number!

Nona call me. I'm waiting for you.

  • @rocknsoulbro good luck hommie, Nona is gay

  • wow they knew how to make music but made shitty videos LOL and that guitar solo should have been at least another 8 bars longer

  • wow they knew how to make music but made shitty videos LOL

  • She would fit right in with the fashions the young ones are wearing like Rihanna, Nikki

  • I fell asleep one night watching SNL, and was awoken by the amazing Ms Hendrix singing this song, wearing some lion-looking outfit, tail and all - she was, and is just freakin' fabulous, and I felt like something glorious was happening to me, really!!! Way too much for a prescribed 'video' - her talent and fearlessness is powerful...

  • this is the first video i ever remember seeing on BET

  • great great great...

  • WOW! Real music Man! Damn!! How I miss & Love the 80's Classics! This was my shit!!! Thanks for posting! Jam & Lewis were at the top of their game when it came to producing as was the entire camp from Minneapolis. I think Jelly Bean Johnson the drummer for the TIME actually produced this cut. Either way the Minneapolis funk, soul, and groove influence is all over this gem!! Love it!!

  • Dog on Right "why should I cry" Aint no man worth me wasting my good tears over. I was a teen ager when this song came out and it was true then and is still true now and I am 40yrs. Forget crying over a man.

  • Looks really expensive for the time.

  • Loved in then, love it now. Thank you JeffMackerzz

  • WOW, remember seeing this for the 1st time on "The Chart Show" on Channel 4 back in the day, then seeing her perform live @ the Apollo, also screened on 4.

    1987... happy days! :-)

  • Hav always loved this song - you go girl. Fav line "....why can't love (life) be like I want it to be.....?"

  • This woman can sing and fit in any genre of music. These pop singers today make me sick.

  • Happy Birthday Nona!

  • Love it Love it. Nona puts it down . . . . . . . . why can't love be like I want it to be? She was great with Lady Marmalade and an even better solo artist. Where is she now?

  • @OlCaliGirl Nona has her own record label and is still performing and writing and producing. She also wrote on Labelle's reunion album Back To Now and co-wrote the song System that's featured in the movie Precious

  • this was my jam

  • Nona Hendryx is a brilliant songwriter, she's just a great artist. She's also very good in concert,a nice person as well.

  • I love this song. I went to school with Nona. From Junior high through high school. We were good friends through the years. My father worked with her mom. Great person and a wonderful friend. Love ya

  • I have this on 12" vinyl. Jammed the hell out of it back in the day!

  • They still use some of the trains from '87 on the Long Island Railroad, apparently. :p

  • Thevideo was completely awesome for its time, same effects they used on Cameo as well, too bad it very little airplay

  • Comment removed

  • When Nona was in her mid-thirties, the 20-year-old David Sylvian was totally infatuated with her. They spent time together and apparently had an affair. No wonder, Nona is truly beautiful. P.S. For those who don't know, David Sylvian was the vocalist of a British band called Japan, known as "the intelligent band", because of their classy music. The papers at the time named him "The world's most beautiful man"! He is still making sweet and clever music today and, like Nona, is still very beautiful!

  • To all Lady Gaga fans; pay attention. Everyone today that you think is going forward, look at this and even some of Nona's earlier stuff and you will see that there is nothing new going on today. And again, I must emphasize, Nona, Betty Wright, Bette Davis (the singer), Sarah Dash, Patti LaBelle and others were doing this in the days when people really sang and didn't have vocal enhancers and pitch correctors in the studio.

  • @wmdbassplayer So so true. What do you know the about Betty Davis debut album?.

  • @bigdaddy45able : To be honest, dude, I'm at the point where I've forgotten more than I remember and after a homeless period I lost a lot of shit. I do know that there are NO true female funk artists out today and what passes for "talented high-concept artists" are posers rehashing all of this great music from the late 60's - mid 80's which, let's be honest came mostly from Black artists. The worst of it is that they copy the style but not the true talent. Lady Gaga is a living media event.

  • @wmdbassplayer Heart was a great band led by two sisters, chryssie hynde and the pretenders are good to.You're right there are no female funk artists out there right now man,a taste of honey were good back in the day.Nona hendryx is a helluva artist, with or without labelle, sorry to hear about your homeless stint.

  • @bigdaddy45able : Those were great artists also. The difference between then and now is that on the subject of really great acts, back then there were too many to mention; today, in my opinion, there are too few to remember.

  • @bigdaddy45able :Also, before anybody wants to slam me about saying "mostly black artists" there where white female artist during this time that kicked ass. Remember Grace Slick? Wendy O. Williams? Janice Joplin? Joan Jett? Hell, even Mama Cass Elliot could sing rings around most of today's female artist, though she didn't fit the ideal mold of female rock star.

  • DIVA = Divine Inspiration + Victorious Attitude. Patti is soooo much a Diva, ya gotta say her name twice!! Patti Patti!! when i grow up I wanna be so much like you. I don't have the voice, but i hope to have the spirit.

  • I know that's right...stop thinking about it and keep it pushing.

  • id put this on and pump it loud in my basement, put my headphones on and jam out on my drums... good track to play too, I have this on my MP3 player and STILL keep in in the rotation... on another note, I always wondered what kept my ass glued to this vid... hell she was just sexy... AHHHHH, umph, my young teenage years.

  • WOW!!!! I remember this video from my post high school days. She was in her 40s then and looks about the same almost 25yrs later.Makes one proud to be Black :)

  • grand central staion gets its props!

  • she had some interest material in the 80s

  • This is truly a GREAT SONG especially for those of us who have been in relationships with "USERS" who take KINDNESS,FAITHFULLNESS and LOVE for granted!

  • A broken heart isn't easy to hide. You don't feel the same.

  • I am looking for this song. Any ideas where I can get it.

  • Love this song to death...=)

  • @Marcia5Norf1 dam the way she move in the beginning reminds me of Janet and tboz lol

  • it's funny, in this video, which is very old, she's dressed the way rihanna dresses today, except nona is twice rihanna's age in this video and looks just as good or better and sings better.

  • @in991 i think rhianna copied her. you got it reversed!

  • @omerta113311

you know what i meant!!! obviously rihanna copied her, since rihanna probably wasn't even BORN when this video came out.

  • this used to all over the radio in Dallas when it came out, this video used to have mesmerized, and I still dig that beat.

  • Can my uncle JellyBean and Lisa Keith get some props for this groove?..LOL! Uncles Jimmy and Terry played on this groove, but this one is all JB and LK...:)

  • This is such a great song..I love it. "Why should I cry".

  • I remembered this! :) Great track from Lady Hendryx.

  • @timmy841212 WHEN SHE DO THAT AT @0:39 SHE REMINDS ME OF JANET AND TBOZ THEY HAD DONE SOMETHING LIKE THAT BEFORE LOL

  • @timmy841212 to me shes the female version of Jermaine Jackson lol

  • Excellent song!

  • wel, i thought this was mary davis from SOS Band singing this.. well folks here is the very fine nona hendrix"Why Should I Cry?", a top 5 R'n'B hit (also reaching #58 on the Billboard 100). The accompanying album, Female Trouble, boasted an impressive list of contributors, including Peter Gabriel and Prince ("Baby A Go Go").

  • @uzipolo she sound a little like Vesta Williams and chaka khan lol the song reminds me of Janet lol and miss Abdul

  • Greatt song

  • LEGEND !

  • Hey mizzzzzzz hatetrix right back at ya DUDE!! I WASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS a fan till I heard your retarded song bout a good man an your hateing mouth demean him! Go freak your self your just second rate bs its no wonder Patti made it an your a LOSERRRRRRRRRR! Sheep huh? Thats fine by me hey nono go drink yourrr cool aid with the rest of the GOATS IN HELL!!!!!

  • I'm half your age and if your ever in need of a younger man call me

  • The world needs some new music from Nona Hendryx. Her last album was in 1989 - Skin Diver. Why no new album in 21 years. She's prolific in doing one off guest shots that don't amount to a full album of her unique music.

  • I first saw this video on VH1 Classic Soul. What I love so much about the video is the aquarium effect, it's esthetically pleasing to the eyes. Plus I love her outfits in this one. Thanks for posting :)

  • This is my first time hearing a Nona Hendryx song and video! Jammin'!!!

  • her body is still bangin. She aged NICELY!!

  • Khandi Alexander is a dead ringer for Nona Hendryx.

  • they look nothing alike to me! Nona is very pretty to be in her 60's and kandi Alexander's face is fish-like.

  • That is so true! Well Khandi Alexander will be first pick if Nona ever had a movie made.

  • @girl89kn yes yes lol

  • @girl89kn THATS CRAZY U SAID THAT CUZ BOTH OF THEM IS FULL BLOOD GUYANESE INDIAN LOL

  • Badazz Nona, can't fade her LOVE HER SINCE I WAS KID....if it wasn't for her wouldn't be a Santigold and other black rockers! Keep this dream alive! I'm black and proud and forever a headbanger..

  • Aesome bod no question, this was an amazing yet severely overlooked track...

  • NONA! Under appreciated, under rated, over looked DIVA. At the time she could share the stage with Grace Jones with no shame.

  • get that dam' submarione out of the way, I'm watching the two Nonas!

  • Lol!

  • Lol, amen to that. Homegirl(s) iz smokin! Hair 'n all

  • I remember looking at this video as a teenager, before BET when Donnie simpson was the host, so hott!

  • Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are masters

  • @str8sick So true! Vintage beats from them.

  • @str8sick Yes They Are Masters Of Producing Artists... New Edition, The Human League, Nona Hendryx, Janet Jackson, Johnny Gill, Morris Day And The Time, Karyn White And Many More!

  • Nona hendryx is a legend ! Loved her with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells! Also Sarah Dash, let me not forget ! And her behind still looks fabulous ! Because black dont crack baby and Nona keeps herself in good shape !

  • Thanku, thanku, thanku!!!i first heard this in 1991!!i always sung the chorus but never knew who actually sung it.Good things come to those who wait ha ha!

  • the was a jam. her body is slammin!

  • Yes! For her age back then her body was slammin!

  • very sos

  • When you have Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis producing one of your albums,or one of your songs,or involved in your musical project in one form or another you are almost guaranteed a hit.

  • this track is beyond f***ing awesome! man, jimmy jam and terry lewis are all over this one! i got the album but was so disappointed that jam and lewis didn't do every single song on the album. still, i loved this song and the song called BIG FUN from nona's album..

the video's kinda' corny but this amazing song still holds up. i had a huge crush on nona. i wanted to do her so bad..lol...

  • I agree! Can't you only imagine what her album would have been like if Jam and Lewis had produced the intire project. This is slamming!!

  • @cornbreadthedog I saw her perform this live in 1987 at the Apollo Theatre and she rocked and put this man in check for disssing her. Jam & Lewis played on this song but it was actually written by Spenser Bernard Nona Hendryx & Lisa Keith and produced by Spencer Bernard a former staff producer at Flyte Tyme Productions

  • @MUSICENCYLOPEDIA Yes, it aired after a SNL and I was fortunate to catch it - awesome!

  • @cornbreadthedog I saw her interviewed on by Donnie Simpson on BET when this album came out. She said tht Jam and Lewis were going to originally produce the entire album but she wanted more of her own input. Dan Hartman (Relight My Fire and I can Dream about you) produced much of the rest of album. They wee good friends until his death in 1994. Baby Go-Go was my favorite track.

  • @cornbreadthedog I didnt know Jam and Lewis produced this

  • she is smoking, i just can't believe she didn't go far far far.

  • love this tune wicked!!! bring back the 80's

  • she was ..THICK.." before the term was penned, very sexy lady had the talent to go with it and didnt have to show her boobs or do gimmicks to make it happen they need to do a UNSUNG on label unfortuntly it will take 2 hours or more to do so...lsays uzi polo-king of decatur

  • Trademark Jam and Lewis. At around the same time she recorded Baby A Go Go wtih Prince. Watched her LIVE at the Dominion back in the day. One of the most unappreciated artists (saleswise) of our times

  • Love this song...haven't seen this vid since the 80's...very alternative and funky at the same time...sounds like a Jam/Lewis production...

  • it IS a jimmy jam & terry lewis production ^^

  • Cool..it had their STAMP all over this song..Worked out WELL.

  • actually this was produced by Jelly Bean Johnson who is affiliated with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis but they didin't do this number but they're all from the same crew.

  • I'm a big fan of the minneapolis funk scene, so I know all the crews and stuff.. actually this was produced by spencer bernard (who is the husband of vocalist lisa keith) with a little help from the time-drummer jellybean and lisa keith in writing.. terry lewis took over the synthesizers and jimmy jam played percussion with jerome benton.. cheers ;]

  • This video reminds me of "Candy" the video by Cameo. Nona is amazing. LaBelle period. Thanks for posting.

  • nice song..kool beat & melody. never heard this, 1st time. she had a kool look 2..funky

  • One of my all time favorites!! Heard it for the first time in a great gay bar in the Castro in San Francisco!

  • Hey this is a good song...and I never knew she shared a birthday with ME...it's NEVER in any list always John and Sean Lennon...so this is good to know.

  • Mine too. Sharon Osbourne and a few others too

  • Didn't know about Sharon Osbourne either...thanks!

  • Very underrated and also ahead of her time. Also unbelievable that she started out w/Patti Labelle and the Bluebells in the early 60's. Her greatest hits album (from 1998?) for the most part sounds fresh today.

  • She is HOTTT!

  • All I can say is wow! I haven't heard this song in a really long time. Thank you for the memories!

  • Kinda hard to realize that this multi talented woman is now in her mid 60's. But just listening to her music erases all time frames, she's still smokin hot today.

  • Nona is awesome! She graduated high school with my mom - Trenton High School class of 1962. However, she looks like she is much younger than that!

  • She has a great voice. She sounded really good at the Labelle concert.

  • Always loved ths song. Took a chance and typed in her name and voila!!!

What a class act she is!

    Thanks for posting!!

  • Nona Hendryx is still scorching HOT at 64!!!!!!! This goddess of a woman never ages!

  • she is ageless

  • this is how it is done! awesome singer, awesome song.

  • i used to dance my ass off to this song when i was a kid. I had no idea that she was a memeber of Labelle, or what the hell Labelle was back then. I just loved this song!! She never changes..still looking good 23 years later

  • One of the greatest songs of the 80s. I still play the old 45 rpm of this on my turntable. Thanks for posting the video!

  • This sounds like a Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis joint.

    Great song, Cheesy Video.

  • that's cause it is homey!!

  • thanks my man! i heard that labelle reunited recently. do you know if they toured the left coast?

  • it is

  • i would have loved to see her sing with tina turner

  • I could listen to this song over and over and NEVER get tired of it. :)

  • This song is still hot, and Nona is still all that and a bag-of-chips!!!

  • How sexy was this woman at 43, when this was made?!!!?

  • This doesn't have enough views, add it as I will now. This was a great tune and one of my favorites. Thanks for posting it!

  • I like the song where she says "Standing in line for your love is asking too much!"

  • I love Nona. She was the brains behind Labelle. A great booty too.

  • She still got a fantastic booty and a tight body as well at 64! Damn! Call me a pervert.

  • me to

  • I hear ya.

  • wow!excellent!!!

  • I first saw and heard this song on Soul train in 1987. That my friends was the best summer of my LIFE. I was 15 and loving all of it. When you put this on it brought back sweet and smooth memories. LOVE IT!!!!

  • @joesolese I remember this song very well,I was 18 and had my heart shatter in peices! My first love dumped me the summer of 1987....it was the worst part of my life.

  • it's been years since i've seen this .... TUNE!

  • This song was actually produced by Jelly Bean Johnson

  • Great song, lame video. I used to play this years ago and everyone who heard it thought is was the SOS Band. Seeing that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had their hands in both it's understandable that people were confused.

  • Hot song and even hotter video!!!

  • Nona you rock!!! Would love to see any of the bitches they call "singers" today try & pull something like this off. Love this woman & Sarah & Patti & Natalie & Chaka & Donna & Diana & Mel'isa... Oh where have all the divas gone!

  • Yeah she is! I like her new goth look.

  • Nona is the bomb... she's still sizzlin HOT even @ 64 yrs young..!!! Thanks...

  • Thank You for this one, I was looking for it for a while and had given up.

  • Yes! oh yes!! Miss Bad Nona -- love huh!!
