The breakup of the USSR was a geopolitical catastrophe. Brezhnev was to blame, for being unamenable to reform, and rigid relapse into Stalinist reaction that was anachronistic to the social and economic realities of the 70s and early 80s in the USSR.

They needed a leader like Deng Xiaoping, but as well as economic reforms to improve people's lives, social reforms to gradually increase civil liberties and intellectual freedoms.

It's all academic now, though.

The producers of this should be ashamed and join a monastery in penance. Isn't the subject a bit too serious for showing old photos with spooky music and saying, "Ooh Putin's shady and dangerous. Be afraid." Sure your British audience is sure sore over dependence on Russian government-owned oil, but it's still pathetic to play into those feelings the same way you can provide catharsis with a horror film. Congrats. You show as much reality as A Nightmare on Elm Street.

@schkum Well, this is a WESTERN film about Russia so don't be surprised. If Putin was more democratic and more subservient to the West, then he'd be portrayed as a hero of change. I've watched a LOT of British/American films on Russia (my favorite subject!) and they all, more or less, portray Russia in a negative way.

Imagine if Putin got rid of the Russian military, American/British politicians would be creaming their pants.
