Ok, now I *must* play Homeworld, are you happy now Internet ? Didn't you already took all my free time for playing such epic old awesome games that changed gaming forever ? Sheesh, I'll do it of course...
But this is the last time, for real this time, my backlog won't go beyond 200 entries !
This is the mission where it glitched out on me. Not only did I manage to snag one of those frigates, but I managed to save all six Cryotrays. Unfortunately, the game refused to register the fact I'd saved the sixth one, and proceeded to tell me to 'save the CryoTrays'. I had nowhere to go, nothing to do, and that frigate to analyse. I had to reset something like 8 times. Still a beautiful game though. :D
Dam fleet command y do you have to sound so emo? i mean you're races just got incinerated, your planet is on a fire storm, and all you ever knew was destroyed. But dude lighten up
A link to a video constructed from images from probe approaching Saturn was posted on a forum several months ago. The video played music from Homeworld. I watched it and it was so beautiful I nearly cried. I mentioned this in the thread and an anonymous poster told me I would love Homeworld.
I never found a video game that resonates with me more than Homeworld.
The very fact that the voiceactors do not break into emotional drama at this sight is what makes it so incredible. They're military members trained to stay calm in all situations, and even then you can hear the sense of shock just barely inlaid in their lines.
ahh yes this mission was a shock to me since I never read any reviews :p twas the moment you realise you're going to be stuck in a serious fight for survival

Those lines are the best voice acting I've heard, I have no idea what kind of godly voice acting you've been exposed to to skew your perspective so, but I would very much like to hear it.
@kolosssal the voice acting's perfectly fine :S it isnt meant to be the peak of emotional acting the acting was always meant to remain as in control as possible in keeping with the character of the kushan/hiigaran's (they're a fairly proud bunch)
7 Persons couldnt get a passage into the mothership. On a serious note, the Kushans should have never left the planet for they were sent there as punishment and any way of space travel was forbidden to them by the Taiidan empire. Sorry for being a nerd, I just dont like the Kushans ^^.

you dont see films use music and voice acting this good , it is tightly scripted and moved many who played it ,including me. I like that the game gives the impression you're just returning to base to launch a counter offensive against the Taidan. Something along the lines of ''YOU ARE NOW THE ONE WHO WILL LEAD US IN THE WAR COMMANDER!" Only to find out that there is no home anymore, it's burning.
When I played this a long time back and saw this scene I was like: OK, whoever was this fuck who burned my planet to a giant piece of glass is going to get fried by every Ion cannon I can get to bare on his damn ship!
Several hours and around 1000000 dead taiidan, Turanic raiders and kadeshis later: THATS RIGHT, BURN YOU MOTHERFUCKING ASSHOLE BURNN!!! TASTE THE WRATH OF THE COUNTLESS MILLIONS OF SOULS YOU BURNED IN KHARAK!
@tankhunters "If you choose the path of revenge, [they] will return in greater numbers, and the fighting will never stop." -Arn Magnusson. I think that Karan S'Jet simply pitied them in the end, and that's why she she's fleet command.
Shivers down my spine and goosebumps - one of the strongest scenes of HW1, if you're into RTS and liked the game (I absolutely loved it) it's damn hard not to be touched. Everytime I hear the music piece the phrase "Kharak is burning" comes to mind. Just goes to show how damn good Relic is/was at making games.
Your entire race just burned alive, victims of genocide that you could not have prevented. The normally calm and detached crew members are just barely holding it together, and you must scramble hard to save the last remnants of your race.
Thanks for telling me, people seem to think my comment is bad so they have rated it 2 thumbs down because they are ignorant of the fact that I am ignorant. :P
One of my most favorite HW1 footages. Really moving. I felt almost like I would be one of the Kushans... feeling the grief. I would only point at the not so fluent turnaround the Mothership at the beginning. You surely can do more fluent move with the camera if you try several times ;)
this music is so hauntig - sends a shivver down my spine every time a lisen to it,
ive played all 3 homworld games this one was the best (not graphix wise ofc) best for muisc and makening the player want to continue the sorty and see the end
-music is Samuel Barber - Adagio dor Strings (Agnus Dei) -
Well, they were legendary when they came out, but now... well, I'll put it like this. By all rights, they shouldn't hold up against newer games, and yet somehow they do.
Best story of its kind, Best game of its kind, best game of its time, Best Game Fucking ever. I and I care not for this new generation and their no longer next-gen console games and money mongering companies. This game right here is the definiton of putting your heart and soul into a game. thank you Relic
Somehow I think the games 10 years ago were a lot better than the crap we are getting today.. There are still great games developed today but they became rare and storylines are weak..
As for homeworld. I wonder when Relic will announce hw3 since the Lizences are back to THQ and Relíc.
Man...homeworld you know it was the best game I had ever stolen, I was young and stupid and I never got around to installing the game on my old old old old comp but the book kept me for months on end, it was my bible and i cherished it, infact I still have it to this day. and when I finally got around to playing Homeworld I was FLOORED at its epicness, and yes I was drawn to tears when I heard those words. Kharak is burning. I was like WHAT THE HELL HOW?? then I saw the Taidaan. Man I was pissed
I remember this game. It was so fascinating the first time I played. After kicking the Emperor and finishig Homeworld I just couldn´t stop to start it all over again.
I remember when I hijacked so many ships, that my old AMD Duron 800 and Geforce 2MX just gave me at the final battle perhaps 3 frames per second :D.
I love(d) this game. It is still my favorite game.
Its games like this that I wish I could go back and play them again for the first time so that I could truly appreciate the art of it. Back when I was 14, I took a great game like this for granted and didn't give it the respect it deserved the first time through.
I miss those times... Who else remembers the time when games were deep and intelligent?
Today its mostly crap compared to those old classics.
But the saddest part is that todays young gamer actually believe those new games are great and the stories well written. As seen below with the Halo 3 comment.
I've read comments from people who said that they sounded monotone in this scene. I think that it's fitting for how you would naturally react in these situations. Imagine if this were earth, you'd come back and your first thoughts would be pure, unadulterated shock. It would be more "....wtf" than "omg gonna kill people let me at em"
I love the subtle breaks in the guys voice particularly at "...not even beacons"
this is still the only game ever to provoke such powerful emotions that I was moved to tears.
you spend the first 2 missions not really appreciating the gravity of the situation, but then you return to Kharak and suddenly you realise what all this meant to the Hiigarens, and exactly what your role in the story is meant to be.
no other game I have played can yet be compared, in terms of epic scale or emotional involvement.
When Halo 3 came out, one of my friends said "Dude, this is, like, the conclusion to pretty much the greatest video game storyline ever. It's gonna be, like, so epic." I proceeded to go on a massive tangent on how Halo doesn't in its wildest dreams even begin to approach the greatness that is Homeworld. No video game has EVER drawn me in emotionally save this one.
My friend also said "Ah, the Halo theme is so good." The Halo theme is just a destitute vagabond's Agnus Dei.
Nothing in Homeworld Cataclysm or Homeworld 2 came CLOSE to this in terms of emotional power and impact.
As a matter of fact, nothing in any other game I've ever played came close to this. Hearing Fleet Command say "Kharak is burning ..." nearly brings me to tears.
Which makes it oh so sweet when you get your revenge on the fleet responsible ...
The worst part of Homeworld Cataclysm was the Canadian accents that all the ship pilots had. In the first one, all the voice responses were professional and calm, in the second it's all "Hi-ho, let's go to Ooter Space and get some space donuts, eh"
Especially since they just destroyed all live on the planet because some ancient jump-drive contract was broken, that the people did not even know of.
Brilliant choice of music, Nice voice-acting, one of the best games ever.
Imagine the Kushan fighter and corvette pilots as they went to attack those Taiidani assault frigates. They must be in a rage to kill those Taiidani for what they did.

Homeworld is a great game but the voice acting is terrible. But this place its accutaly good. Homeworld Cataclysm got amazing voice acting but the game is kind of bad becouse of that fighters are chanceless against capital ships and such
The voice acting from Fleet Intelligence in this level is amazing. He manages to get the job done, and convey -just- the right amount of emotion with his voice. Very subtle, but very clear.
@FearlessSon Its awesome Fleet intelligence trying assess the horror that he see's. barely keeping his tone from wavering as he see's his planet, his race, his home burning below. I get goose bumps every time i here that music queue up.
@FearlessSon The voice of Fleet Intelligence is done by Michael Sunczyk - you can see him here by searching (imdb off the grid stargate) and going to 26:42.
@FearlessSon Yes. It's not about just conveying emotion. FI voice is very calm and controlled, almost emotionless, with the exception with brief moments where this control falters (unfortunately the most notable moment - "stand by for playback" is not in this video). Acting something like this is just pure art.

i was watchikng battlezone 2 videos and i saw this. makes no since but i probably would understand if i played the game. battlezone 2 has some very emotional times too. kinda like when your commander who you have the entire game (long live commander shabayev) is captured and turned into an alien, or when your general betrays you and tries to bomb you and then you have to kill him. or even when you kill the homeworld and all the scions, including your commander, are suffering.
I still remember, turning around and seeing kharak... I was like 11 at that time... and the song just matches it perfectly... I was shocked.... The song... the voices... and seeing a whole planet being consumed by a firestorm...
hey man , the same happened to me . Amazing coincidence . My father gave me a disc with Homeworld when i was 11 .Those songs , that voice will be always im my heart .
The same - Homeworld has the best plot i've ever seen. Ill always remeber this mission - in that moment i thought i will start crying... Only 10 years old
can you emagine it would be Earth, and that our planet would burn to the gound by an firestorm, and that several ships would arrive to help, but are to late, that they see the entire planet burn down, and all who inhabbit the planet would die..

Quite possibly the most moving scene in all of gaming. Playing this mission all I could think was "I HAVE to save those cryo trays!"

@tankhunters "If you choose the path of revenge, [they] will return in greater numbers, and the fighting will never stop." -Arn Magnusson. I think that Karan S'Jet simply pitied them in the end, and that's why she she's fleet command.

@tankhunters Every Ion cannon? Im pretty sure when you first play the game You aren't aware of such weapons.
1Hard2Ass 9 months ago
@1Hard2Ass knock knock, I played skirmishes a lot before I even touched the campaign.
tankhunters 9 months ago
@tankhunters I like playing as Taiidan because their Ion frigates remind me of Squids...
So when I played as Taiidan the empire lost their capital ships via squid-shaped ships that fired lasers.
Amusing or what?

@apuleyo They have tried, I think they gave up on it because the lack of support.

It would be swell if somebody could mod this game to the HW2 engine.

The tone in Karan's voice was heartbreaking.

Ummmm...what's so good about this scene? O_O
I'm not saying it isn't brilliant, I just want to know why it's so amazing.

Youtube commentors seem to like exaggeration. Somewhere down the page I did the same thing.
I DO really like this scene, though.

@ScottZirpolo Hehe...I would buy it but knowing myself...I probably won't enjoy it so much because I don't like this kind of game really.

It's not for everyone. I'm just an RTS freak, s'all.

@ScottZirpolo I don't own any RTS games but I ordered Battle For Middle Eath 2 yesterday.

Music, voice acting, this feeling you get when you see Kharak etc... Everything!
Axatar 2 years ago 2
It's a very emotional scene.
Your entire race just burned alive, victims of genocide that you could not have prevented. The normally calm and detached crew members are just barely holding it together, and you must scramble hard to save the last remnants of your race.
MelissiaBlackheart 1 year ago 4
I see. :P

"Capture at least one enemy ship.
...Destroy the rest."
That scene really hit me. The tones of their voices, even Karan's managed to get the feeling of utter shock, loss and disbelief.
That combined with the music...wow...

Most EPIC space adventure EVER

this music is so hauntig - sends a shivver down my spine every time a lisen to it,
ive played all 3 homworld games this one was the best (not graphix wise ofc) best for muisc and makening the player want to continue the sorty and see the end
-music is Samuel Barber - Adagio dor Strings (Agnus Dei) -
handy142 2 years ago
The graphics are technically bad, but that doesn't stop the game from being utterly, utterly beautiful visually.
AirWaterLandBuffalo 1 year ago
I have to disagree. The graphics were legendary when the game came out, and every old game is going to look dated after seeing all the modern titles.
Unless you're replying regarding halo?
Ratznium 1 year ago 3
Well, they were legendary when they came out, but now... well, I'll put it like this. By all rights, they shouldn't hold up against newer games, and yet somehow they do.

@AirWaterLandBuffalo what you mean bad graphics ? this game is from 1999 .

Best story of its kind, Best game of its kind, best game of its time, Best Game Fucking ever. I and I care not for this new generation and their no longer next-gen console games and money mongering companies. This game right here is the definiton of putting your heart and soul into a game. thank you Relic

Right...

Edenhyde246 2 years ago
I remember this game. It was so fascinating the first time I played. After kicking the Emperor and finishig Homeworld I just couldn´t stop to start it all over again.
I remember when I hijacked so many ships, that my old AMD Duron 800 and Geforce 2MX just gave me at the final battle perhaps 3 frames per second :D.
I love(d) this game. It is still my favorite game.
MrFluxcompensator 2 years ago 2
Its games like this that I wish I could go back and play them again for the first time so that I could truly appreciate the art of it. Back when I was 14, I took a great game like this for granted and didn't give it the respect it deserved the first time through.
badgerchurch86 2 years ago 6
I miss those times... Who else remembers the time when games were deep and intelligent?
Today its mostly crap compared to those old classics.
But the saddest part is that todays young gamer actually believe those new games are great and the stories well written. As seen below with the Halo 3 comment.
I miss the old times...

Hellyeah! Listen at the " Standby for playback" part and enjoy the voice acting :)
Axatar 2 years ago
I've read comments from people who said that they sounded monotone in this scene. I think that it's fitting for how you would naturally react in these situations. Imagine if this were earth, you'd come back and your first thoughts would be pure, unadulterated shock. It would be more "....wtf" than "omg gonna kill people let me at em"
I love the subtle breaks in the guys voice particularly at "...not even beacons"
SyntheNeko 2 years ago 4
"standby for playback" is even more jaw-breaking.
Props to the voice actors.
Axatar 2 years ago
this is still the only game ever to provoke such powerful emotions that I was moved to tears.
you spend the first 2 missions not really appreciating the gravity of the situation, but then you return to Kharak and suddenly you realise what all this meant to the Hiigarens, and exactly what your role in the story is meant to be.
no other game I have played can yet be compared, in terms of epic scale or emotional involvement.
SavageHoax 2 years ago 2
When Halo 3 came out, one of my friends said "Dude, this is, like, the conclusion to pretty much the greatest video game storyline ever. It's gonna be, like, so epic." I proceeded to go on a massive tangent on how Halo doesn't in its wildest dreams even begin to approach the greatness that is Homeworld. No video game has EVER drawn me in emotionally save this one.
My friend also said "Ah, the Halo theme is so good." The Halo theme is just a destitute vagabond's Agnus Dei.

Halo's alright and somewhat fun. Homeworld is the best game ever made, and never ceases to be epic.
AirWaterLandBuffalo 1 year ago 3
This is so sad.
Dreamang3L 2 years ago 2
The worst part of Homeworld Cataclysm was the Canadian accents that all the ship pilots had. In the first one, all the voice responses were professional and calm, in the second it's all "Hi-ho, let's go to Ooter Space and get some space donuts, eh"
ClearAirTurbulence 1 year ago
@ClearAirTurbulence I didn't mind the voices in Cata, but it didn't come close to the epic emotionless space-opera that is HW1

Especially since they just destroyed all live on the planet because some ancient jump-drive contract was broken, that the people did not even know of.

"...not even beacons."
I completely agree.
Dreamang3L 2 years ago
@FearlessSon Its awesome Fleet intelligence trying assess the horror that he see's. barely keeping his tone from wavering as he see's his planet, his race, his home burning below. I get goose bumps every time i here that music queue up.
Ryock46 1 year ago
@FearlessSon The voice of Fleet Intelligence is done by Michael Sunczyk - you can see him here by searching (imdb off the grid stargate) and going to 26:42.
DAB8387 1 year ago
