Because they went on to influence bands like this that we're listening to. Nirvana was incredibly original and their music was simple and kinda goofy but at the same time inexplicably compelling.  Great band.

The reason Nirvana is such a big deal is partly due to the time period they released their music. The height of hair metal and pop music (Michael Jackson) was coming to a close when these slobs from Aberdeen, Washington slammed their fists against out of tune instruments and half mumbled/half screamed into garbely mics.

It was a breath of fresh air, really. This isn't to say they were the first grunge band. Screaming Trees and Skin Yard came way before. But Nirvana was the first "big hit".
